Holy hell, why didn't I start playing with the job conditions on the Manager screen sooner? No more over-producing shit that I can't be bothered to count. No more passing on industries because they're a pain to micromanage. Combine that with Planning mode that DF Hack adds to placing items in the fortress, and I can automate basically everything, up to and including building rooms for my nobles with only masterwork, decorated furniture.
Edit: What's up with fighting though? I've been running multiple forts over 5 to ten year spans and never had an enemy show up aside from the occasional forgotten beast that I lock up in the caverns. Even after I started a war with a goblin civilization and an elf civilization at the same time.

If you kick their asses hard enough in a few fights you tend to end their excursion permanently. A few of the Succession Forts we ran were a bit too lethal in terms of military, traps, and in one case, a volcano.

Who watches the watchmen?I still want to try my hand at a succession fort. I don't think I could resist the temptation to start all the wars though.
Was getting worried why I couldn't get a wagon through to my depot, it turns out it was a snow-covered boulder directly outside the gates. That's gone now and so "Frozen: the Fortress" can receive trade. I was starting to think these mountains were completely inaccessible.
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984Good. I'm just quietly awaiting the next version of the game. With party mode, it feels like it'll be a tile based version of Kenshi now. And that's not a bad thing.
Commemorating my first fatality in Frozen the Fortress by building a statue of her death and placing it with her coffin. This'll be our burial tradition.
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984As opposed to celebrating her life with a statue of her in her work gear to signify who she was.
It is Dwarf Fortress where commemoration of murder by cheese is not unheard of.
Who watches the watchmen?Everyone's got a life. Few people died tragically thanks to some !!Cheese!! being hurled by a were-hippo who just had their other arm torn off by the deceased.
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"Well, we wouldn't have to "remember" her if she were still alive now, would we?
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984Can't recall, anything special need to be done to harvest bones from corpses? Slaughtered animals and military kills?
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984Won’t sane dwarves refuse to butcher the corpses of sapient races? Or did you mean “military animal/monster kills”?

They also have to be large enough to have pieces.
Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing. You also have make sure your dwarves have permission to handle corpses and bits. Make sure you haven't forbidden body parts.
Who watches the watchmen? That's probably the problem, my werecamel changed back into a women when they killed her, so no human-bone crafts.
Anyway, doing well at Frozen: the Fortress, and I've replaced the slain war dogs chained to the fortress gates with tame war grizzlies.
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984Dwarf Fortress to be added to Steam with actual graphics, mod support, and a $20 price tag.
Wonder if this means DF is getting closer to actual release.
Qui odoratus est qui fecit.I mean, it's always getting closer.
But the stated reason is to be surer of having money for medical expenses, so probably not in the sense you're thinking.
Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.Holy mother of fuck!
I don't know if this is amazing or terrible.
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984I mean it's pretty terrible given the rationale is "if literally anything happens to us we could be fucked for the rest of our considerably shortened lives."
the US is a mess.
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"With the ease features being added, I'll be looking to get it soon after release. Assuming the graphical issue I have is fixed (My graphics card doesn't display the menu highlighter very well so I have to guess what option I'm over) I will be doing a Let's Play fortress on my You Tube channel to support this.
The missus and I will be buying a copy off of steam since it helps them.
Who watches the watchmen?Same here, plus Workshop support is a big deal for me.
Tried to get in the game a few times...never works. Good to see the game releasing on Steam with official graphics pack though! Might pick that up and try again.
Give me cute or give me...something?
I modded out Aquifers, as is my standard, and genned a world. I'm bustling about the house a bit, so haven't gotten settled in to play quite yet.
This is going to be fun. Wonder how long I can keep it up. I'd love it if I could offload the bulk of raw resource work to my outlands and just devote my fortress population to warfare and refinery work.
ETA: The ability to name your buildings is something I didn't realize how much I wanted/needed til now. It's nice being able to differentiate at a glance what each stockpile is for.
