outside observer who hasn't watched the sun and moon anime but is interested in doing so here-

Do you think they saved Kartana as the last Ultra Beast, to give it the kind of treatment it deserves? In the games, that thing is a monster truck of murder-death.

It's kind of ironic that Kartana was kept for last. It makes one wonder how long the writers knew about Pokemon Sword?

wild mass guess Ash goes to Galar along with the Ultra Guardians to pursue Kartana. While the Captains have to return to Alola, Ash stays in Galar.

wild mass guess Also, for the first time since Sinnoh, he carries along a Pokemon other than Pikachu: Rowlet and the Rotomdex.

Anyway, I'm of the other persuasion re: Ash's companions: Given how the companions have been hit-or-miss throughout the series, I'm of the opinion that there was a violation of the Conservation of Ninjutsu in play: that is, the more characters there are, the more flat they become. Pokemon are only a fraction of a human in this case, but each separate evolution counts for this total.

I was wanting Ash to have a Solo (plus Pikachu and the Pokemon he caught) journey; no other humans being regulars; I'd still have the Terrible Trio chase him, but they would average 1 appearance a (production) month.

Now that would not be to say that he wouldn't have friends in this region: you would have recurring characters that would play similar roles to the companions of the past; it's just that they wouldn't be in every episode, making them have (potentially) more impact in the episodes that they do appear.

At the level of characterization the Anime has, less is more and more is less.

So it's confirmed now that Lillie is getting her dad's old Z-Ring in next week's episode.

https://www.pocketmonsters.net/forum/threads/6992?p=12960#forumPost12960

Lillie and Gladion believe their father Mohn is still alive, so they're examining his research material at Aether Paradise in search of clues. When their mother Lusamine sees what they're doing, she takes them to Mohn's old room. And there, Lillie finds the Z-Ring Mohn once used, as well as the mythical Pokémon Magearna. Lillie asks Island Kahuna Hala if it's okay for her to use this Z-Ring... Will Lilie finally be able to use Z-Moves?!

I figured they'd so something like this for Lillie. Ash got his from the Tapu, Kiawe inherited his grandfather's (though he had to beat Olivia to earn it), Lana found a Sparkling Stone with Olivia made into Z-Ring for her, and Lillie gets Mohn's Z-Ring.

And Mallow just exists it seems.

...then again, she gets a random Legendary so maybe they are aware.

[up]Of course, Lillie might be getting the Magearna too.

I'm kind of surprised that Gladion wasn't using that particular Z-Ring during the series.

So... appropriate music for these next 3 months?

And again, Kartana is still at large... it'll probably get only 10 seconds of displaying swordplay right before it's captured in a Beast Ball.

[up][up][up]Granted she got a mythical that's So Last Season and they don't do anything with (even Poipole got as far as having a personality and bond with Ash and his team).

I'm mixed about the whole mythical handouts this series since they rarely seem to be exceptionally powerful this series, all of them are 'babies' in fact, Nebby left the moment he evolved and gave Ash an unfair advantage.

[up]Yeah Shaymin doesn't really do anything beyond replace Steenee as Mallow's cute Pokemon since it evolved. Same with Lana and Eevee really.

Nagisa at least has more personality than Brionne however so I guess it's not all bad.

My bigger problem is that all these promotional Pokemon are failing to give the trainers as much agency. Only Meltan might work as a battler for Ash (and at least gives someone for Rowlet to interact with). They haven't really done anything with Shaymin or Nagisa, besides showing Lana slightly out of her element from how hyper Nagisa is. Besides that Nagisa lacks any water moves so fails to apply to Lana's....er....goal of blowing big bubbles.

I find it ironic we've had plenty of creative use of one-shot Pokemon cooks yet they've failed to involve any such ideas with Mallow in a whole series.

Lycanroc is the nearest to a promotional Pokemon that actually has been given prominent use, and even then it's most the same as the other forms in terms of abilities.

So apparently, the Alola League is not your typical League.

Everyone can participate. And all the students want to join the battle. Heck, even Team Rocket may join.

Guzma apparently hates the idea of the League cause he already knows who's the best: himself.

In short, we have Don Battle Tournament on our hands, if I'm reading this correctly.

Oh, and that means it really doesn't matter who actually wins the Alola League since there's no Elite Four or official Champion to contend to in the aftermath.

[up]Since it's the first ever league, whoever wins becomes the first champion.

[up][up] On the one hand, so long as we see multiple rounds, this will still "count" because Ash only gets one shot. EDIT: This was not obvious in the Orange League, rendering it an ur-Battle Frontier.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if this tournament incorporated a "Group Stage" of Pool Play to determine the Top 16 for the Knockout Portion. Or if they ran a Swiss qualifier similar to the TPC Championships.

On the other hand, this actually makes my two potential "best case treatments" for this tourney viable:

  • Ash losing in the first round but other Ultra Guardians advancing will give us plenty of battles to watch while seeing Ash coping (or not) with being on the sidelines.
  • The lack of qualification standards could allow for foreignersnote  to come and test their skills. Foreigners... like Gary or Misty, reestablishing Ash's Myth Arc by that person beating him either restoring Ash's traditional rival, or by giving Ash a replacement rival more in line with the perceived endgame: a slot on Kanto's Elite Four. How Misty ties in there is that she's a Gym Leader while Ash is a Rōnin trainer, so they would be vying for that slot from opposite paths.

As for the Tournament itself, since a plurality of Elite Fours were tapped from the ranks of the Kahuna in original SM, I believe that Kukui would seed Kahili, Olivia, Hala, and Molayne either as the Top 4 if he's not participating, or among the Top 8 if he isnote . If Kukui is participating, I also believe that we could see Ash seeded either 6th, 7th, or 8th; Acerola would be seeded as well with 1 spot remaining for either Ilima, Gladion, or Guzma (EDIT: Or Lusamine or Mohn). A seed would have originally been awarded to Nanu, but, just as he declined to be in the games' Elite Four, so too would he decline this tourney.

They nailed Guzma with Golisopod's Emergency Exit activating and Guzma trying to play it off as Golisopod losing interest in the battle because Pikachu is "too weak".

Kukui even called Guzma out for running away like he always does

So Ash's companions could enter the league, we knew Kiawe was entering but if all 5 of them do that will be surprising. For the first time since the series started Ash's female companions will be in a league. Instead of just being relegated to the sidelines or for Contests. Granted none of them besides Lana are battle oriented, so I don't imagine Mallow/Lillie making it too far if they enter.

Lana could very well become the legendary heroine of the entire anime if she makes it far into the league. Especially if her starter evolves again before the league starts.

I stopped watching ages ago but I wonder when the League will start and what will come after, if there's any time left over. Assuming SWSH come out in November like SM and USUM did instead of October like XY and ORAS, there's still another seven months. Six if we get the new generation in October.

From the previews for next week's episode, it looks like the Arc side of the next 3 months will be "Ash Ketchum and the Search for Dr. Mohn" with the League following this mini-arc.

Man, Guzma's intro is off the hook. Again this is another reason why I resent the anime, due to how they seem to really not know how to adapt stories from the games.

Adapting the stories from the games is all it really does, bar BW.

But since the Aether Foundation arc has passed, it doesn't feel they will do his character fully right. That's the problem they half hardheartedly adapt stories, without really understand what made them great.

I mean most of the game's have cookie cutter plots. It's really only BW and SM that have stories I'd consider good. Like I enjoy the stories for most of the games, XY nonwithstanding, but do they really need to adapt them in full?

[up][up]I don't really mind it since this gives Guzma a chance shine on his own instead of playing second fiddle to Lusamine. He's still got his Inferiority Superiority Complex, and him failing to become a Trial Captain (since they don't exist in the anime) was changed to him giving up on his Island Challenge when he couldn't beat the Kahuna, and he wants to destroy the Alola League.

Actually I think the anime makes even the more cookie cutter stories shit, because they still are about following a kid that can't grow up or even accomplish anything of real note.
