Go To

Ok it was mentioned there is not a thread for Law Enforcement Officers (LEO for short)and other similar jobs for discussion.

NZP issued a statement on the shooting in Christchurch:

Police continue to deal with what is an unprecedented event for New Zealand. The loss of life and the number of those who have been injured is tragic.

As the Prime Minister has stated, this has been designated a terrorist attack.

This has been an abhorrent event and my thoughts are with all of those affected in Christchurch. Be assured NZ Police stand with you all tonight.

We now know that 49 people have been killed in the attacks, 41 people at the Deans Avenue mosque, and seven at the Linwood Avenue mosque. One person died in hospital.

The number of those being treated in hospital has been updated to 48 people.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with murder and is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow morning.

Two others remain in custody. Another person was arrested earlier today however that was not related to these events.

This is still an ongoing situation and Police has a significant number of staff on the ground in Christchurch

We are unable at this stage to provide details about matters leading up to the attacks. It is very early days and these matters will form part of the investigation.

There is an increased Police presence across Christchurch and surrounding areas. Our priority is to keep all New Zealanders safe.

There are community events planned across the country this weekend and there will be a visible Police presence at these events for safety and reassurance.

We thank the public for their ongoing co-operation and we would like to reassure members of the public that a large Police presence will remain in the city for the time being. The safety of the community is our priority.

Police wish to notify the public of the Restoring Family Links (RFL) website (link is external) where people can register missing persons or register themselves as alive. People living in New Zealand can also register missing persons on 0800 115 019.

Information will continue to be provided as it becomes available.

Our thoughts remain with all of those affected.

Saw someone share a FB vid on what's happening in Paris from a group (I think) called Don't Trust the Media.

Macron's EU riot police thugs brutalize peaceful volunteer medics in Paris, France today in defense of globalism, tyrant Macron and his Rothschild overlords. The civilian medics are there voluntarily to treat Yellow Vest protesters maimed and injured by the EU police and their excessive violence.

[up]"Rothschild overlords"

Okay it's safe to ignore this. That's pretty much an anti-Semitic dogwhistle right there.

And considering the YV movement already has an anti-Semitism problem...

[up][up] Subtle.

[up] They're also talking about "globalism", which is another antisemitic dogwhistle, in my experience.

Yeah, I noticed that "globalism" bit too. I'm thinking whoever shared this vid is an anti-Semite.

Pedantic, I know, but I am pretty sure that "Rothschild overlords" is not a dog whistle. The Rothschilds are sorta known for being Jewish, speaking of "Rothschild overlords" is only slightly less obviously antisemitic than talking about "Jewish overlords".

[up] Yeah, outright mentioning the Rothschilds kinda gave the game away. They're not even trying to be subtle anymore.

Only thing missing is a mention of Soros.

It's still something of a dogwhistle, if a rather loud one. Maybe more of a dog trumpet.

I'm almost surprised they didn't go all the way and mention Rothschild, Soros, globalists...y'know, go with a whole friggin' dog orchestra of anti-Semitism.

Envelope pushing. A lot of people (c.f Trump) are using racist/sexist/anything-ist language with no repercussion and that is encouraging others to push the envelope more and more.

There's word in Austria that the FPÖ can be called to disband after an investigation on the suspect's links to them before what happened in Christchurch.

Huh. Yesterday, the Chancellor (who heads a government consisting of a coalition between the centre-right ÖVP that he's a member of and the FPÖ) was merely asking that the party draw some kind of right border to things that are too extreme for them.

Although all the articles I am seeing talk about stripping the FPÖ of their intelligence agency posts, which are a somewhat different issue.

I didn't see the death penatly thread on the first page so I figured I'd post this here: the Texas Department of Criminal Justicr has banned all chaplains/spiritual advisors ftom the execution chamber after a man was granted a stay by the US Supreme Court because they wouldn't let his Buddhist spiritual advisor in.

NPR: Supreme Court Sees 2 Similar Death Penalty Questions Very Differently

On Feb. 7, the Supreme Court, by a 5-4 vote, ruled that Alabama could go ahead with its execution of Domineque Hakim Ray, a Muslim man convicted of murder. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals had temporarily blocked the execution because the state barred the condemned man from having a Muslim imam at his side in the death chamber. Alabama said only the prison's Christian minister would be allowed in.

...

Commentary from the right, left and center denounced the decision as a violation of Constitution's ban on favoring one religion over another.

"The case is another that can be cited by those who rightly observe two rules for religious liberty in this country — one for Christians, and one for everyone else," the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty said.

"The state's obligation is to protect and facilitate the free exercise of a person's faith, not to seek reasons to deny him consolation at the moment of his death," wrote David French in the conservative National Review.

...

Fast forward now to the evening of March 28, the court, this time by a 7-2 vote, granted an eleventh-hour stay of execution to Patrick Henry Murphy, a Buddhist prisoner in Texas who had been scheduled to die that night and who had been denied a Buddhist religious adviser at his side in the death chamber.

So what is the difference between the two cases?

In the first, the conservative court majority said the Muslim prisoner waited too long to ask for an imam. The execution date was set in November, the court said, and the condemned man waited until 10 days before his scheduled execution to ask for his religious adviser to be with him.

...

The court's contrary decision seven weeks later came in the case of Patrick Henry Murphy, a Buddhist, scheduled to die in Texas. After learning of the Ray decision, Buddhist Murphy filed his request for his religious adviser to be with him at his scheduled execution 30 days later.

...

Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch dissented. They would have let the execution go forward.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, writing for himself alone, said that in his view, the state has to treat all denominations "equally." That means, he said, either the condemned, regardless of faith, must be allowed to have a religious adviser of the same faith in the death chamber or all religious advisers must view the execution from a separate room with other witnesses. "The choice is up to the state," he said.

What I find interesting is that it went from 5-4 to 2-7. That means not one, but three justices thought this case was different in some way.

Thing are getting more interesting with the police in Tokyo regarding Ghosn's ex-wife.

The wife of former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn says she left Japan because she felt she was in danger following her husband's latest arrest.

Carlos Ghosn was arrested for the fourth time last Thursday on suspicion of aggravated breach of trust over Nissan funds sent to a dealership in Oman.

Carole Ghosn arrived in Paris and spoke with the weekly newspaper, Journal du Dimanche, which published her interview on Sunday.

The French newspaper quoted Carole Ghosn as saying that when her husband was re-arrested, Japanese investigators confiscated her Lebanese passport, computer and cell phone and asked her to agree to voluntary questioning.

She said she refused the demands on the advice of their attorneys.

Carole Ghosn said she left Japan on Friday evening, using a US passport. She said the French ambassador to Japan accompanied her to an airport boarding gate.

She also revealed that while freed on bail, her husband had a video taken of him making his case in English. She was quoted as saying that he wanted to point out who was responsible for the circumstances he is facing. She said her husband's lawyers will soon make the video public.

Carole Ghosn has criticized the Japanese judicial system for the lengthy detention of her husband in what she sees as an attempt to get him to confess. In the interview, she reiterated the criticism and asked the French government to approach Japanese authorities.

The Japanese National Police Agency will formally use anti-drone equipment:

Japan's National Police Agency has decided to deploy a new type of equipment called a "drone jamming gun" to prevent possible terrorist attacks.

The device uses radio waves to block the control signal of an illegal drone. Other countries, including the United States, have already introduced the technology.

The police agency plans to begin security personnel drills with anti-drone guns ahead of the G20 summit in Osaka in June, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Drones have been involved in various accidents and caused problems in Japan.

Spectators were injured when a drone crashed at an event in 2017 in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. In 2015, a drone was found on the roof of the prime minister's official residence.

Last year in Venezuela, a drone loaded with explosives blew up in mid-air while President Nicolas Maduro was speaking at a military event.

Did he get out of the vehicle? I can’t imagine a taser being particularly useful against someone inside a vehicle.

That said, I can’t imagine doing a vehicle stop without a gun period, so I’m sure they have some different practices.

[up]Boxing-in (be it by vehicle, stinger or use of traffic calming "furniture") and a bullhorn: it can work, you know. tongue

Nobody can stay in a car for hours when surrounded and with nowhere to go. Sieges work: particularly when cars lack things like water and toilets. wink

Frankly, we Brits think going for the gun option is really weird.

[up] Blockading is used in the US too, it’s just not practical on most roads. Getting out in traffic is the single most dangerous thing an LEO can do, barring maybe serving a high-risk warrant, and interrupting the flow of traffic only makes it more dangerous. Like in the UK, that tactic is typically only attempted for major crime stops. You’d be having a fairly pointed meeting with a supervisor if you jammed up a major highway for motor enforcement.

The big difference between the US and the UK, of course, is that in most jurisdictions in the US it’s entirely reasonable to assume the person being stopped might have a gun in their car. Speaking from personal experience, the number of vehicles that I stopped where the driver ended up being armed was surprisingly high. Given the massive, massive tactical disadvantage the officer is at during a traffic stop, an armed suspect can pose a serious threat.

This is the whole reason behind the aggressive tone of most traffic stops in the US. Keep an eye on the officer stopping you, they’ll almost always have a hand on their weapon and they’ll be standing at an angle where they can draw on you before you can. For most LE Os in the US, the traffic stop unit of their curriculum in training begins with several hours of footage of officers being murdered during traffic stops.

They should have sent a poet.

[up]When I said "the use of guns is weird", I meant on all sides, mate. Our criminals are more into knives, swords and machetes.

Also, Britian is crowded: we have literally millions of cul-de-sacs, dead-ends, horrible traffic circles of undercarriage-ruining doom and, failing all these... teeny tiny country hairpins with stone walls, hedges and/or ditches on either side. wink
