This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

~jasonbres — Complaints are not "levity", and we take Example Indentation in Trope Lists very seriously here because it is how we format all examples. To show that you understand the rules of this site, can you please reply with a corrected version of the following example from Recap.Family Guy S 5 E 1 Stewie Loves Lois (if the example doesn't belong at all, then post links to the policy pages that it violates and restate those violations in your own words):

~Sheruru — You've used that thread once. That's not what was agreed to.
~H Barnill — I'd be willing to see you getting another chance, but I'm going to let another moderator handle your release. Nothing is quite a "smoking gun" of bad behaviour, it was more of a pattern of "arrogance and ignorance" as you put it. I'm not sure if all the other moderators agree to your release, or to any conditions, as there hasn't been enough discussion on our side.
~Scsigs: This isn't very hard. Editors are expected to pay attention to that kind of stuff & correct it every time. We have no reason to release your suspension because you're just going to repeat your bad editing practices again. I can suggest that providing useful assistance in the Get Help With English thread would support the claim that you won't make the mistake again, but if you were to end up encouraging natter, Word Cruft, or other bad editing practices, then we'd have to ask you to stop.
~LWE 200760 — I don't understand, how does promising not to launch or edit any drafts tell us that you plan to follow the existing rules? We don't particularly care if any given editor is more active or less active in different areas of the site. I'm not very involved in TLP, and that's because I choose not to be. Rogue launching is still a relatively large problem in TLP, so when inexperienced editors make that mistake, we want to ensure that they understand it's against the rules. If you want to participate in TLP, that's great! I want to make sure you won't be violating any of the TLP Guidelines while you do so.
~themusicfreakslover — Yet, when you made this post yesterday, you forgot to capitalize the pronoun "I". It's a basic capitalization mistake that the Get Help With English thread is expected to help with. In the thread, you're forgetting Example Indentation in Trope Lists and CamelCase. We expect consistent better grammar before your suspension is released.
~Namethatisnotinuse — You've not demonstrated yourself to be a very good editor, based on your recent edits to Inspired By and Muppet Babies. Example Indentation and Zero-Context Example violations are normally reasons to suspend tropers from wiki editing, so I have no reason to release your TLP suspension at this time.
~Toony Explorer 24Edit Warring? I don't have anything about that, just a note that you struggle with using good grammar. Did you mean serial tweaking? That's not usually something we suspend for. Why don't you run through some of your edits in the Get Help With English thread for awhile and see if we can't fix those grammar issues. There's also a note about complaining, but that might get fixed if you learn how to phrase things better, so I'm not going to place much emphasis on it. Let's see how you are after... 10 suggestions in the Get Help thread don't need to be fixed.
More responses coming.

~ANT Muddle — This is the third time you've been suspended, and the second time for an Edit War. You should know the procedure by now. You promised to follow the rules, even when it annoys you, and were specifically reminded not to edit war.

Now let's get into the secondary reason for your suspension, emphasis for work names. It's in a couple of places, but let's focus on How to Create a Work's Page, where it clearly says the following:

What emphasis do I use for the title?:
Whatever you do, it does not belong in boldface-font (even though The Other Wiki does that).
Trying to insist that another troper is in the wrong when you are violating wiki policies is not going to encourage anyone on the moderation team to unsuspend you. The rules are clearly laid out in this situation, and you have been aggressively defending your "right" to break them. Just because they were the first person to contact you about it (last year, so plenty of time to check the rules) doesn't mean that they're the only one who cleans up the mess.
~Boobiesgalore — Alright, you currently have 6 notifiers. You're getting released with the understanding that you won't be accumulating many more because you'll be checking with various threads (such as the Get Help With English Here topic) to ensure the context, grammar, and indentation is correct.
~Khai Phan 2000 — Adding sources? I'm not quite sure that I understand what you mean. Try correcting the following example, based on Zero-Context Example:
  • Jerkass: Almargo. Of course. Definitely Almargo.

I think I've caught up the thread. Please repost if we/I missed you.

I almost forgot about ~AHI-3000! Sorry about the lack of clarity earlier, we were still discussing the details on the private moderation forums and I was still getting feedback. Based on our internal discussion, we want to keep the wiki-side suspension in place for one year. After the end of that timeframe, starting 22nd Mar 2022, you can request to be released. You're fairly active in the workshop forums and we'd like you to continue to be active during this suspension period. When you request to be released, we're going to review your forum behaviour and make our evaluation based on that. If the moderator consensus is that you are still combative and trying to force your opinions past disagreements, then we will add the workshop forums to your suspension while leaving the rest of the forums available to you. If the moderator consensus is that you've improved and are persistently working to persuade or compromise, then the wiki-side suspension will be released. As Fighteer said, we don't want this back-and-forth that we had in TLP repeating with the wiki and then the forums, so we will be making both decisions at the same time.

OK, then.

IN CLOSING:

To other users: If the recipient of your complaint perceives it as having a Rules Lawyer attitude, that fellow user is not just going to feel disinclined to go along with the rule in question. In my experiences here, there's actually a stronger chance of it having the opposite effect.

To the moderators: I would be interested in having a little knowledge of how and where boldface became the acceptable means of announcing the title of a short work (such as the theatrical animated cartoon) on that work's page. There has to be a history behind it.

~ANTMuddle: The practice comes from Wikipedia. I should think that it would be clear that we don't use their standards.

Also, that persecution card doesn't work on us. "Be nice or people will do the opposite of what you want to spite you..." are we schoolkids now?

  • Bait-and-Switch: When Lois wakes up from a nightmare about killing Stewie, she initially compares herself to "that Texas woman who held her son underwater too long and gave him brain damage", presumably referring to Andrea Yates, but then says, "I'm just like Barbara Bush!" in reference to George W. Bush's mother.

Is that better?

After thinking for a while, I think I have changed my mind.

I want to take the choice of having my suspension released on the condition that I will check my edits first.

I will promise to check my edits every time to make sure that the spelling is correct and that the edits contain no zero-context examples. I will not edit recklessly and I will also make sure that every edit, no matter how small it is, counts and matters. I will make sure that I will make every edit high quality, no matter what.

If I fail to uphold the condition, then I am willing to face the consequences of my actions and be banned from TV Tropes.

I will take the responsibility of the decision I choose. I will try to not repeat the mistakes other users made regarding this decision.

I will read the guidelines about editing in TV Tropes.

I promise that I will not take this lightly. I am sure that I have learned my lesson about editing in TV Tropes now. Every edit that I will make matters, no matter how small it is.

If I receive a message about an edit I made, I will read it and not ignore it.

And since many pages in TV Tropes are complete, I doubt I'll make a lot of edits like I used to.

I used Reverso to check my spelling.

The Wiki Words thing I thought was trivial, since some other users decided to have spaces in their edits. As for “natter” and “complaining”, I have yet to see any clear examples of unnecessary rambling on my part. Give me some insight, then I can change.

Scsigs from NY, USA Since: May, 2015
#23590: May 14th 2021 at 9:40:52 PM

I don't intend to create more "natter" and, I explained why the other editing things happened, as 1 of the examples brought up were me genuinely not thinking and trying to be helpful, while the other was something I didn't know about. But, I won't fight anymore on this issue. It's clear what decision's been made.

As for taking a look on that page, I may.

And, something I feel the ned to point out is that a lot of pages on the site do not have trope example entries formatted the right way, or they're inconsistently formatted between the correct way and the incorrect way. I think it's easy to see why I didn't know what way was preferred just by noting that. I understand if correcting all of the pages is a massive undertaking people don't wanna do, but I think it's worth pointing out to bring it to the attention of the people who run this place.

~kennydarmawan13: Seems like your edits are better now. That said, I strongly suggest that you don't rely entirely on a spellchecker - they often fail to notice typos when the typo/error happens to be a correct word (just not in the context). I'll lift the suspension.

~Guckerman: As far as I can tell, only a tiny minority of all tropers leave spaces in their edits. As for inappropriate commentary, let's start with these.
~Scsigs: Correcting all the ill-formatted entries on TV Tropes is an ongoing job and we can't do it all at once. But still, when you are explicitly told that you are doing something wrong, continuing to do it wrong isn't really justifiable.

I can kinda understand how some of those edits seemed a bit too long and whiny, and probably should’ve been put in YMMV or Headscratchers instead. May I have my editing rights back now? Or is there something I have to do first?

I'm a bit confused. How did I get banned from the YKTTW/Trope Launch Pad section of TV Tropes? From my personal observations, I have not done anything wrong or suspicious there, just simply observing and voting as well as occasional feedback but never rogue launching or editing someone's else work without their permission. Am I unaware of any rules that I might have broken or was it mistake?

A hat is basically meant to say, this draft is ready and should be launched. It's the closest thing to a "yes" vote we have on TLP. My guess is that I abused it too much, even for drafts of tropes or indexes not yet ready. I promise I won't just throw in a hat for unfinished drafts.

~Chrononaut70: Correct. We can see vote histories now, and there are numerous instances of you hatting TL Ps that were anywhere from poor to pretty much zero effort. This is your second TLP-related suspension, so you're going to have to convince us to let you back in.

~Chrononaut70, that's not the answer we want. A vow to stay away from an area or page has a good chance to be broken. Trust me, it happened before at one point (with a few different tropers). What we are looking for is if you can understand the rules.

Yes, I understand the rules. These include no spam drafts, no rogue launching, no launching a trope or index without notice, no trolling, no dogpiling, no vandalism, no editing other people's drafts without their permission, no bothering other creators, and only use hats if the draft is ready or bombs if it is unsalvageable/needs more work.
