This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

[up][up][up] Correction; There was one person disagreeing with the decision by the time I created the page, but I went with the 3:1 consensus. And I realise that I should have been less hasty, but then again, hindsight is 20/20.

Hello, I am bbb35 and I have received the message you have sent me regarding my suspension to TV Tropes editing page. I understand that the issue is the possibility that I will continue making spelling and grammatical errors and that is why you want me to the thread. I understand the reasons for my suspension but I am still hoping to have it lifted by December at the latest.

I know the reasons for my suspension and I promise to be more careful in the future. I fully intend on having a friend proofread my tropes before I post them. I promise to keep using that thread in order to avoid any future errors. Once again, I have learned my lesson and I hope that I can prove myself and soon suspension lifted.

I have received an edit ban after three of my edits were reverted by the same user. I do understand that these edits had an either political or philosophical content and I am aware that people are generally biased when it comes to these subjects, which is why I am putting great effort into writing such content as politically neutral as possible.

One of the edits in question was on the Men Act, Women Are page, which was reverted in two parts, one time for "sounding like an anti-feminist argument", as if that would invalidate my point somehow. The other was for style reasons. I know that this is a touchy subject, but you simply cannot understand this trope fully without the evolutionary argument, which is why I believe that the example should definitely be on the page somehow.

The other two edits have been on the controversy surrounding Elisabeth Warren and her DNA test. Since she vehemently tried to invoke the One-Drop Rule, this should become an example there. I wrote this example with extreme caution, so why this was labelled "a blatant strawman" is absolutely beyond me. Since Warren did not succeed, this makes it an example for Pass Fail as well, although the case there may be a matter of discussion.

I believe that all three of these examples have merit, so I would like to put them on their respective discussion page in order to see if we can reach an agreement.

Hello there. It appears I've had an edit suspension.

I have an idea this is to do with my edits to the Dragon Ball TV Tropes pages, which I've been trying to alter to correct various namings/details to be more universal, and put a bit more emphasis on the more accurate translations used in the subtitles of the shows.

My logic was that the dub terms would be totally alien to anyone unfamiliar with the American dubs — so, anyone who was a casual viewer in the UK or Canada, or is familiar with any non-English version would be totally lost — so, any character names should use the accurate, somewhat universal subtitle names, with a note explaining their alternate dub names. And even outside of dub names so as to ensure any reader should be able to figure out what's going on. There's also the problem of the rather crap translation overall in many of the dubs, which leads to information based on the dubs to often be at odds with what went on in the original. Something as simple as "Over 9000" is in fact a mis-translation, with the original being 8000, and GT is of particular note, as Funimation's dub introduced various plot holes which weren't in the original, or the alternate dub that aired in the UK and Canada. One character in the original Dragon Ball, Tsuru-Sennin in the subs and the Canadian/UK dub, was called Shen in the US dub, which caused a character originally called Shen to be renamed in the US dub... The Kai dub tended to correct a lot of problems, but that only covered the Z portion of the story, and there are still issues... However, even things Kai changed(For instance, changing their spelling of Vegetto to be correct, rather than their older use of "Vegito") are often described incorrectly here on TV Tropes, defaulting to the original dubs' way of doing things, so... The fact things aren't even consistent with each-other is even more troublesome than the fact that dub-isms are used at all. One user complained to me over a PM that my terminology isn't the "Offical dub terms", but they didn't say anything to me after I laid out my case to them in a response.

Having now looked into it, it appears more recent translations are favoured over older translations, so it would make sense that, at the very least, the Kai dub terminology should be taken into account, being more recent than translations of the original run... However the subtitle translations in Dragon Ball are always assembled after the dubs, with the dubs being assembled before TV airings, then later being put on DVD, and the subtitles being assembled for the DVD releases, after the dub audio track is already long since done, so for Dragon Ball, Z, and GT, naturally the subtitle translation would be the more recent, thus preferred translation. And of course, even when the case of Kai comes up, where that came after the original dub and subtitles, Kai of course, has its own subtitle track, which is — as is often the case in Dragon Ball — more accurate than the dub track. In fact, it's more accurate than the original Z subtitle track, as the regular Dragon Ball subtitle translator, Steve Simmons, had had about 10 more years of experience working in subtitling, translation, and Japanese in general. And, given it was most certainly assembled after the dub was, it very clearly should be the preferred translation on this Wiki, right?

So... At the very least, I feel like this should be discussed, rather than everyone just defaulting to the inaccurate dub translations, and automatically throwing my efforts out... I realise I may not be in the right here, but I really don't know, I'm just trying to make clear what my take on all this is, so my position can be best understood...

I apologise if what I did was out of line. I assumed it was just a case of poor communication, and that someone would eventually reach out to me, and the situation could be talked over and resolved, or otherwise that eventually people would just leave my edits alone, since the point of them was to alter the American dub-specific terminology to be more universal.

I admit I'm pretty new to TV Tropes editing, in the past I'd only been a casual browser, so I don't really know the etiquette of the site. So, I do hope I can be forgiven for my wrongdoings. I do assure you, I had no ill intent here, and I really do want to understand how I may be a better editor in future.

I look forward to hearing what way precisely I stepped out of line, assuming I haven't quite hit the nail on the head, and to getting an idea of how I may have handled it better, and learning from this so I may contribute better in future.

~Robo 4900: If you feel the matter should have been discussed, why were you leaving notes like these on pages?

"HEY! Are you editing this to change the names? If you are, please read the following:

DON'T CHANGE THE NAMES TO DUB-ISMS, PLEASE. Dragon Ball in general falls massively under "Spell My Name With An S" syndrome, but it's especially bad for GT, where Funimation straight-up got a lot of stuff wrong for their dub. For example, the final villain has his name rendered in the subs as "Yi Xing Long", a romanisation of the Chinese words his name comes from(I realise Dragon Ball is Japanese, but the Evil Dragons all took their names from Chinese loan words), which you pronounce as "EE SHING LONG". It quite simply means "One Star Dragon" in English. Funimation decided to instead call him "Syn Shenron", which changes to "Omega Shenron" when he reaches his final form. Regardless of opinions on which is the better name, Yi Xing Long is more correct. Naturally, many dub fans wouldn't know what that means, so for every name that has a dub alternative, I've put a note that explains their dub name. This way, the article contents get to be correct, and no one is confused. Please don't ruin this. Thank you."

~Deadbeatloser 22

I think at that point I was getting frustrated with people just reverting my changes without considering my reasoning, so I left that note to try to at least get my logic across.

I admit my tone definitely reflected my frustrations rather poorly, and I am sorry for letting that get out of hand. But, I'm not sure what I could have done. As I recall, I did try leaving notes along the lines of "Before editing this, please go to the discussion page.", but no one heeded it, at least not that I saw. So... As I say, I got frustrated and... Well... Again, I am sorry for letting my frustrations get out of hand. sad

~generalerror: I think that your edits are a bit off point. We don't discuss Real Life politics in the wiki, especially not while also violating Example Indentation rules (as happened on Men Act, Women Are) or by stretching the trope that is only tangentially about the topic (as happened on One-Drop Rule, the trope is not about political controversies).

Hello, and good evening to all who see this message.

I am The_Taming_Interpreter and, as of late, I had recently received a notice that my editing privileges were suspended. If anything my only guess is that it must have had something to do with a change I made that was deemed, religiously motivated, when I looked into the history of the page when I saw that it was changed back.

I will admit that it was rather insensitive of me to be so aggressive in my reasoning for the alteration. I am a man of God, I will not deny that, but The Good Lord does not command me to force his word upon others. For that, I sincerely apologize for my behavior and immaturity.

Nevertheless, with your permission, I would like to once again be able to edit alongside others on the site.

I have only been a member here for a short time, but I feel that I have already made a lot of contributions to pages and believe that I can continue to due so for days, weeks, months and years to come!

Thank you for your time, and have a good night. Godspeed to you all!

I didn't insert any shipping bias. I didn't mention anything shipping related. All I did was post something about Hinata. So why is the double standard that if you post something bad about Sakura, it's okay, but it's a no-no if you write something like that about Hinata?

~RetrospectGreg: On the Main.Satellite Love Interest page. And in doing so inserted blatant falsehoods about the character in question.

So yes, saying you said nothing about shipping is kind of straining credibility at this point.

I'm going to run backwards from the most current pending suspensions, to make sure I don't miss anything.

~The Castaway Pariah: You are edit warring again on Recap. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic S 3 E 5 Magic Duel, specifically to shoehorn in complaints. Given the number of times we've had to suspend you over this, I see no point in giving you more chances.

~The_Taming_Interpreter: "The Good Lord does not command me..." seriously? If you can't separate religious belief from objective editing, you'll have to find some place else to hang out. FYI, the PM reminder is an auto-reply from posting here. Your messaging privileges were suspended as well.

~Lord Gro: Yes, you accused a moderator of using their status to win an argument, and did so in a very condescending way. As it's a single incident, I suppose we can give you another opportunity to behave in the Workshops, but if it happens again, there won't be any more leniency. Please acknowledge.

~Soban: Back in June, we said you could ask back in a while if you'd behaved in other parts of the forum, and we'd restore your OTC privileges. I see no reason to go back on that offer, so I'll give you a shot. I want to make things absolutely clear, however: if you start proselytizing or in any way acting homophobic, the door will slam shut so hard that you'll need padded underwear for a year.
