This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Yes,I did,but I added examples for almost all of them before reposting, and there are only so many time you can add something to Big Ol' Eyebrows. Also, there is something I must address:there are lot of pages with Zero Context Example that aren't hidden. Why is only Paperinik getting such treatment?

I forgot the no character name rule, I should have called it "the Papess".

So. It's been a week. Was that intended to be an actual time frame for when I'd get my editing abilities back or a non-specific general estimate?

@SRW Fan: I do indeed ask that you put some of your recent edits up in the help thread for critiquing. I want you to see the mistakes you're making so you can do a better job of proofreading.

I am sorry the lateness. I have already gone to the Help thread and put several of my recent edits as instructed. May I request getting my ban uplifted, or I must wait to get some critics?

@Mad Writter: You may not edit again unless you demonstrate competence in the Help with English thread. No exceptions or excuses. Write properly or you don't get to edit.

@menotti: If Big Ol' Eyebrows lacks any narrative significance that you can write an example for, then it's not a trope and needs to be fixed. The ZCE problem is rampant across the wiki and the presence of bad examples does not excuse other bad examples.

Those examples that you re-added are still ZCE, as they don't explain how they apply, never mind being indented improperly.

We require that you comply with our style rules if you want to edit.

@Jaqen: First, your writing is nearly incoherent. Second, your writing style makes us almost certain that you're a sock of our old not-friend Trotzky. Nice try, but we aren't having any of what you're selling.

@CPFMfan: Suspension lifted. We mean it about this being the last warning.

@SRWFan: You have to demonstrate competence by posting edits that meet our standards. The thread is a resource we provide to help you learn to proofread your own work, but it's up to you to fix your problems, not us.

@ Fighteer: I have two problems with that. The smaller reason is my edit banning is preventing from me from reading that thread. The bigger reason is that I am a citizen of the United States of American. I'm been living in the same house in Akron, Ohio for over 30 years now. English is my first and only language This is the truth and nothing but the truth! Can you restore my ability to edit TV Tropes?

Sorry, you may now post in the help thread. We don't give a damn whether English is your native language or not. It's not our fault if you failed to learn the language properly.

@SRWFan: This isn't rocket science. Post edits you'd like to have made in the thread. If they are adequate without proofreading, then you can make a case for reinstatement.

So apparently I was suspended for citing examples of plagiarism on The Nostalgia Critic page. Despite the fact that my examples were actually true. I even cited in which episodes these examples occur. So I wasn't making things up. And I've read other critical remarks about people in other articles, usually without sources! I really don't see what the fuss is about. Maybe the word "plagiarism" is a bit harsh, but just borrowing the exact same joke from other comedians without explaining where you got it from hardly sounds like a "shout-out". I mean, not all of Doug Walker's viewers are familiar with every "Family Guy" or "South Park" episode, are they? I only put my examples back because someone else kept removing him, so I thought that I was probably putting them on the wrong page, or something? If plagiarism isn't a trope that can be linked: why didn't the symbol for "these tropes need to be removed to the YMMV page" or something appear? Now I'm being suspended on suspicion of vandalism while it actually was a misunderstanding.

@Patachou: First, you were engaging in what we call an Edit War. When an edit you make is removed, check the history to see if someone left a reason. Regardless, you do not add it back, you discuss it.

Second, our wiki articles are not for complaining. Yes, we get that the Nostalgia Critic inspires a hatedom, but that hatedom needs to stay off TV Tropes, or we'll ban it, every last member.

To avoid further misunderstandings: I like the Nostalgia Critic. I just don't like people burrowing/stealing/plagiarizing stuff without explaining where they got it from. Doug often parodies stuff, but it's usually within the framework of a certain movie or TV show and then the source material is mentioned or put into context. In those cases it's absolutely a shout-out, spoof, parody, homage, or whatever positive title you would want to give it. And in those cases I don't consider it plagiarism.

I thought it was an interesting addition to the article, but apparently the site doesn't need it. Well, if so, then I don't mind. I'm not preparing a court case against Doug Walker. smile and I have no interest in starting discussions over topics that are a matter of relativity. Everyone's entitled to his own opinion and I just want to write and contribute to articles. At least now I know I can go to the forum to discuss such matters.

So, now that all misunderstandings have been cleared and I've learned some stuff I didn't knew before, could I please start editing other articles again?

You have a deal. In the future, it's best to avoid argument-inspiring concepts like plagiarism and leave them to In-Universe examples. We have no interest in being a party to such accusations about real people.

I think I was suspended for misunderstanding the purpose of the "Taking over someone else's YKTTW when it is not Up for Grabs" and probably got in over my head. I was just a bit excited as Rogue Like Like was a pet trope of mine. I was already under the impression that changing names so much was taboo, but I think I overstepped my bounds with regards to this specific trope.

I'd like to play a role, but as I said, I'm new to YKTTW but not the wiki. My editing was bad, but (as I explained, I was really tired when I wrote it). I was under the impression that I could easily revoke an update to a YKTTW that I had made, which was clearly not the case. My formatting was REALLY bad, and I know that, but I thought I could revert it to the old page on my own.

I made a few key changes to the trope, but I think the changes are what made it popular. I tried to make it clear that I was willing to split the trope, but I am unfamiliar with the tagging conventions. I'd like to try to spark discussion (especially about Rogue Like Likes), but I don't think I should be editing most YKTT Ws. At least for now. I just think that the Rogue Likes part of the wiki could use work, and was under the impression that I was starting in the right place.

I also said I needed stylistic advice. So... Advice? I understand that my edit was too big, but I was also the one who cut most of it down. I also probably overstepped my bounds with the trope name, but despite my sleep deprived jabbering, I honestly think it fits better. I honestly just got waaay in over my head trying to make a page while sleep deprived. Something I'm having trouble with is how much explanation is too much? How much CAN I change in YKTTW before splitting the trope? How should I propose a trope split? (I probably did things all wrong here)

I'd love to add to the discussion without editing tropes. I'm sorry for any hassle I created, I wasn't sure where to start. I (think) I am generally familiar with the conventions of the wiki, but not as it applies to YKTTW. Still think that's a bad idea, just want to explain myself. If I could get the ban at least partially lifted, I'd love to split the Rogue Like Like off because I think it works. Feedback (as always) is MUCH appreciated.

Edit: I'm unfamiliar with how bans work exactly, but if I could at least be directed towards where I should propose/help for my trope idea, that would be much appreciated. I think the trope could work, but I overstepped my bounds without making it explicitly clear my plan was ALWAYS to split the trope. If I at least started some discussion, leave me banned for however long you'd like. That's all I wanted to do, and that trope seemed the place to do it. I'll discuss it on the forums. Hopefully I didn't come off as a jerk, but I was REALLY tired and my writing was especially bad then. I was just surprised to find exactly what I was looking for posted VERY recently, and didn't want to seem rude.

I would like to appeal for the editing privileges again please, after taking some time to actually read the rules, and read some other posts. I understand that I was majorly in the wrong, I was not providing examples, I was not discussing my opinions, and I was starting an edit war despite multiple attempts of others to stop me. I apologise for these actions,I was just letting my hatred for the subject at hand to get the better of me.

@Bluejay134: Whoa there, partner. Bit Wall of Text-y there. If you want to propose a trope in YKTTW, you make your own. You don't just take over other people's entries and make them about whatever you want. Given that you're apparently new here, I highly recommend taking some time to get familiar with the wiki's conventions, including Text-Formatting Rules and such, before proposing new tropes. Try giving Welcome To TV Tropes a read as well, and in particular, YKTTW Guidelines.

@TheJJBL: Good, that's what we like to hear. Your suspension will be lifted. Please remember as you go forward that TV Tropes is not the place to have fandom wars.

I believe I was suspended for thumping and taking the bait in the forums. I must admit at the time I didn't realize the other guy was trolling, but I did take what they posted seriously when they kept on saying how bad the show was.

@OmegaRadiance: This isn't about the forums; there have been wiki-side complaints about your grammar, and I observed misuse of spoilers in some of your edits.

As one example, from Characters.Final Fantasy XIII, with spoiler tags removed:

  • The Evils of Free Will: Bhunivelze's philosophy goes down to this. By tasking Lightning with saving souls, he culls them to rid them of free will, making them nothing more but dolls, and even plans on robbing Lightning of hers, turning her into another Etro, a living balance between the worlds of the living and the dead. Alas, Lightning will have none of it.

"Goes down to this" isn't normal English phrasing. "Nothing more but" is ungrammatical, and that sentence is awkward, nearly a run-on. More to the point, our Handling Spoilers rules say explicitly not to spoiler-tag an entire example. You've been doing this all over the place.

Yeah I definitely see the point about misuse of spoilers due to my inability to be sure exactly how much of a trope I should spoiler. Like spoiling the entirety of the Final Boss trope for Lightning Returns on the characters page.

The Evils of Free Will example is one I copied and pasted from the main trope page of Lightning Returns as it was added by another troper. I should have edited it when I copied it to the characters page. I have no doubt that I done it myself on other pages though.

Being suspended for some time might be a good thing for me. Just so I figure out how to properly use the spoiler trope and work on my grammar.

If you want. We aren't punishing you, but we do want you to edit properly. The key idea of spoilers is to tag as little as possible.
