Well he says "I wanted to revisit that Hyrule again and use that world again". I would hope that doesn't mean literally using the same overworld as the last game, because that would be dumb.

So, since it's coming tomorrow, has Cadence of Hyrule been leaked yet? Asking for non-impatient reasons.

The storm has now resided, the wolf now rests.

In the trailer, a huge castle popped up from the depths. So I think it's pretty obviously going to be at least a little different.

I'm mainly wondering how they'll deal with the Shrines. They can't just leave them there as the exact same puzzles. And they can't have all been completed without an explanation for where your hearts and stamina went. I don't see any lore friendly way to replace them with new areas either.

I missed the part where that's my problem.

I figure the shrines will just bury themselves back in the ground with Link's original mission being over, then maybe a new set will emerge for the sequel. They'd probably have to do something like that, since not everybody will have gotten the DLC with the extra shrines.

I completely agree with Aonuma about "I wanted to revisit that Hyrule again and use that world again" because Breath of the Wild's Hyrule is my favourite version of Hyrule and just a great setting in general. But I refuse to believe he meant "reusing the same Bot W map with a number of differences in the sequel", because exploring the overworld is most of the gameplay in Breath of the Wild and reusing it in the sequel to the degree other people in this thread are suggesting would be ridiculous.

I figure it'll be a sort of asset swap like how Majora's Mask was, yeah a lot of the consistencies from OOT was there, but it was still its entirely own world.

Maybe there'll be some form of time travel? Landscapes in fantasy worlds can shift drastically over 10k years.

Even if the landscape is broadly familiar, it looks like there's going to be more going on beneath it.

I'm honestly hoping for a smaller, denser world, but we'll see.

You think this will be part two of a trilogy of games using the same Hyrule map?

Anyone wanna take a guess at the name? I've got a feeling it'll be "X of the Wild."

I expected at least one sequel to BOTW, really hope they go back to formula after though.

I missed the part where that's my problem.

You know what might be cool is if they do it like Dishonored 2. Where you pick you'd pick between Link or Zelda at the beginning of the game, and the character you don't picked gets captured for the duration of the adventure.

I honestly have no desire to ever play as Zelda. I don’t blame them for having no interest in making it.

[up] x3 If I had to guess, at least part of the reluctance is the fact that a lot of the higher ups are middle aged Japanese men and gender roles in Japan are stricter than in the west. And a lot of Japanese male creators have a...sordid track record with female characters and their representation. Nomura looking at you

They aren’t necessarily consciously sexist, but the idea of Zelda the traditional damsel as the hero probably comes off as something they wouldn’t even consider. They’re selective with their female characters, even Action Girl bounty hunter Samus in the fully Japanese-created Other M had a lot more “traditional female” characterization, not to mention the extremely hamfisted maternal symbolism in that game. And heels on her power suit for no reason.

They’re fine with one-offs and letting the girls take a more active role than before, but they still only have one primarily female-led franchise starring a heroine, and they have a very different idea of how she should be portrayed than the west (compare Metroid Prime series).

They had to make a silly side character Gender Flip of Link who was only in spin-offs once fans requested a female Link rather than making the hero of a Zelda game, otherwise a totally blank slate meant to connect with the player, female.

[up] What's crazy is that all of Samus' past adventures were helmed by the same guy and she was completely different in those games.

It would just be nice to have a Zelda game where she isn’t relegated to barrier maiden or damsel in distress status. Her role in Spirit Tracks was nice, maybe something along the lines of that again?

Either way, I doubt Aonuma would be ready to reveal a playable Zelda right now, so I think him playing coy makes sense.

Maybe they don't want a playable Zelda because it gives them Wand of Gamelon flashbacks.

That's how I read it. I think this is a 'we're not going to answer this now because we remember people being let down when Zelda wasn't playable before'.

It's been fun.
