I just had an idea. What if, for the next Zelda game, it played as a top-down 2d Zelda in handheld mode, and a 3D Zelda in docked mode?
I can't see that going over well myself. It sounds gimmicky like Star Fox Zero's "cockpit screen on the Game Pad" or Other M's weird "now point the Wii Remote at the screen" scan mechanic, and as far as I know neither of those were particularly well received.

I think it'd be better to have the overworld sections be 3D while the dungeons are top-down aside from cutscenes.

[up]I think it would work better if it were the other way around, but it’s a good idea.

Anyway you put it, it sounds like a bad idea to me. The top-down and 3D gameplay are pretty different from each other. Switching between the two in different areas is just going to make half the game worse for someone who likes the other gameplay style more. And giving the option to switch between the two at anytime is going to just water down both gameplay styles to make everything work in both, or it will force the player to keep switching between the two because of gimmick puzzles involving seeing things in one style.

I dunno, I think it's totally possible. Just look at how Super Mario Odyssey did something similar.

[up] Not really comparable. Not only are the 2D sections of Mario Odyssey really short, a 2D platformer and 3D platformer are similar enough in terms of gameplay that the switch isn't jarring. 2D Zeldas and 3D Zeldas play very differently from each other, though, and require extremely different design philosophies.

2D Odyssey felt like an overrated gimmick to me. Sure, it's retro and defies gravity every now and then. But it never really went anywhere until after the credits rolled and that one festival.

2D Zelda wouldn't be as great as it sounds. For starters, how are you going to get behind an enemy?

Something tells me you’ve never actually played a 2D Zelda. They’re top-down, not side view. Aside from Zelda 2, but I prefer to forget about that game.

I thought 2D meant "Mario sidescroller"?

Because I've finished Minish Cap and I wouldn't call it two-dimensional.

Two-dimensional means that the world only exists in two dimensions. Minish Cap has an x-axis and a y-axis but no z-axis. Yeah, you can climb stairs and fall down holes and eventually jump to give the illusion of a z-axis but there's technically not one.

Did You Know Gaming? just released a video on Ocarina of Time. I think it's a redone and updated version of an older video.

[up]Nice. It's always rewarding to find something you cherished as a child.

As for the 3D and 2D thing, I don't see it working, they function too differently. 3D Zelda are combat focussed and make use of the extra space. With each new 3D instalment, there are more puzzles that utilize the ability to aim in three dimensions. Do I think they should drop 2D Zelda? No, it's own thing and is able to separate itself from its 3D counterpart due to its simplicity.

Apropos of not much, saw 14 or so LoZ related costumes at Dragoncon (big sci-fi/fantasy con in Atlanta, GA every Memorial Day weekend).

Probably not a comprehensive list of all that were there, but I saw four or five Champion's Tunic Links (one armed with a Stone Smasher instead of the Master Sword of the others), one genderbent Link wearing the Sheikah stealth armor set, two BotW Zeldas and a couple from other games (details forgotten offhand), a Link wearing the lobster shirt (BotW DLC) walking around with a Medli, and two Gerudo Vai Links.

Not really, because that hadn't occurred to me. I haven't played OoT, so the design wasn't familiar to me.

That said, looking up Sheik on one of the LoZ wikis I don't think it was. The costume didn't have the blues that make up much of Sheik's outfit, it was all blacks and greys.

I didn't manage to get a pic so I can't show it, my memory can give black holes pointers on how to suck, and I didn't talk to her to ask, so it may well have been as you say and I just didn't recognize it.

In any case, I do give her points for something other than regular Zelda or Link.

FYI the main difference between Sheik and BotW's stealth armor is Sheik's concealing face mask.

Which is probably why if you use the Sheik amiibo in BotW, the only piece of clothing it drops is the mask. Pairing that with the stealth armor creates a version of Sheik's outfit.

I've been half-tempted to try to do up a Botrick (arrow vendor wandering on the road passing by the Outskirts stable), but given that Dragoncon is in Georgia in August/September, I can think of less involved ways of committing suicide by heat stroke. tongue

Just finished volume 1 of the twilight princess manga. It was overall pretty enjoyable. V1 covers the prologue with of the game and is simultaneously expanded upon (mainly characterization stuff and Link's backstory) and condensed (the first trip to Faron Woods is combined with the bulb in raid).

There's also some more clarification on how the monarch of the Twilight realm is chosen which was neat. Most surprising is that this Link actually has a backstory and a fairly dark one at that. I'm kind of mixed on this because on the one hand it gives depth to the character but on the other hand I feel it works better when Link is an average joe

You're going to pay a price for every bloody thing you do and everything you don't do. You don't get to choose to not pay a price.

Given that TP Link is canonically a descendant of OoT Link, he was never a random Joe.
