Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Yeah but it's treated as better than Mako energy.

....Come to think of it, what is happening to the present timeline thanks to Remake?

Considering that Mako is essentially fantasy steam power... oil would be better.

Its actually pretty hilarious how inefficient Mako power is in VII.

[up] Humanity died out. Red and his cubs seemingly were the only ones left. FFVII was really the bad ending.

Eh, using mako kills the planet from the inside out; using oil kills the planet from the outside in.

[up]That is an absurdly cynical interpretation of a single scene set hundreds of years later. All we know is that Red is still alive by then and living with more of his species, and Midgar wasn't turned into a crater, instead having been abandoned at some point and overgrown with plant life.

There is nowhere remotely near enough context to assume that humanity died out, and the "Holy cleansed the planet of humans" theory is up there with seriously believing the "Cloud drowned Aerith" theory in terms of stupid edge. Its also canonically not what happens, simply from the existence of AC and Do C.

Even if something else happened that did cause human extinction before the epilogue, that in no way makes the original VII the "bad ending". We are all going to die someday, humanity will eventually be extinct due to whatever reason(s), and the Earth will be consumed by the Sun. That, ultimately, is just life.

[up][up] I mean, FF VII's ending is pretty vague, and we do hear children laughing happily in the ending so it could go either way.

And I'm talking timelines as in did the Remake's events overwrite the original timeline or create a new timeline?

The interpretation I always took was that Holy sided with Meteor to destroy humanity (a possibility that had been brought up earlier) but then Aerith leading the other souls in the Lifestream destroyed them both to prevent this. And then yeah, the final scene was centuries later.

The end sections of Final Fantasy 7 put a lot of emphasis on how even though Shinra is awful, the people living in Midgar are worth saving. So ending on Midgar being abandoned, while children laugh happily elsewhere, is a culmination of those themes.

The characters in Final Fantasy 7 Remake assume it is a bad ending with no context, but that assumption is probably misleading and them playing into Sephiroth's desires.

Sephiroth is smart enough to frame the ending of FF 7 as a bad ending.

And the funny part is, it's only a bad ending for him.

I think the fact that the one trying to change the past is the bad guy who wanted to abuse the planet to become God, but got stopped twice, says all we really need to know about his intentions here.

And the fact that he's created the possibility of his inevitable loss being an even bigger win for the party than it was the first time just makes it delicious.

Plus it's another chance at torturing Cloud.

So why wouldn't Sephiroth do it? That's the most important part for him.

Also most credible environmentalists are very much opposed to the idea of a mass die-off of humans being portrayed as a good thing, and feel people who advocate it accomplish little but making the whole movement look bad. Such people are sometimes called "ecofascists."

I very much do not feel like FFVII is the kind of game that would intentionally send such a message. That interpretation is just the mid-aughts internet edgelords talking.

I want to hear what they say. Like do they have some solid scientific facts about why humanity dying is not a good thing.

Cause there's the morality of it, which is obvious, but I'm curious to hear other bits of logic on it. Then maybe someone can bring it up in a story the next time some idiot tries something like that.

The moral argument, and also because people are part of nature. We build a lot of stuff that messes things up, but the reason we can do that is that we evolved a natural capability to do so.

[up]x11 Final Fantasy VII: On the Way to a Smile Lifestream Black and White explains it. And it... explains essentially all of Rebirth. Even the plot ghosts, the final boss and those three + Bahamut is all explained there.

FFVII was the Bad Ending for humanity, the Planet won.

Think of it like Xenoblade 1, Humans are Homs, the Weapons are Telethia, and the Planet is the Bionis. The Bionis wins and eliminates the Homs over 500 years.

[up][up] The whole multiverse thing FF7R throws at you. It calls into question which media is actually in the same universe as the original FF7 and which ones aren't. Like Crisis Core's Angeal/Genesis shenanigans could be canon to a different universe but not to the original FF7.

The ending in the Steam version is extra creepy as after those kids laugh away the game just closes. Doesn't even go back to the opening menu.

Nah, they explain what will happen to humanity over time. Advent Children was just an attempt to speed it along faster.

Remake is also consistent with everything in there as well, scarily so. It really is an attempt at doing the Good Ending this time, will it though remains to be the question.

VII Rebirth developer update 4, they have made it so a person who has not played VII Remake can jump right into VII Rebirth.
