Final Fantasy general

Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Pretty much all the translated lines are just as dismissive/rude and give the same feeling as "whatever." anyway though. [lol]

Squall sometimes reminds of my own thoughts in that sometimes I am annoyed by some people but lack the self awareness to realize that I have similar traits that other people can criticize.

Being dismissive is VERY different from being rude or sarcastic.

I think there's just kind of a difference between him both saying and thinking "whatever" in response to everything all the time, and him saying "my bad" all the time and sometimes thinking dismissive things or saying rude things on accident.

To put it a different way, being openly dismissive to people all the time is a rather confrontational attitude. It makes it seem like Squall is willing to start shit over how much he doesn't care. But it actuality, Squall's thing is how non-confrontational he is. He gives a weak apology to everyone over any confrontation because it's the most passive things he could do, and he's trying to end the conversation as quickly as possible. He doesn't mean to be rude to anyone, because that would just cause the other person to keep trying to interact with him.

So I just discovered that Advent Children Complete had a new closing credits theme written and sung by Gerard Way, but it was cut from the English release, which kept the original theme from Advent Children.

It's a shame that it was cut, because I really like it. It's not even on any music streaming service.

It's kinda funny that the Japanese release uses a song sung in English, while the English release uses a song sung in Japanese.

I'll have to show this to her, thanks for the link and info.

Would anyone contest FFVII's world map theme is the best in the series?

All the remake talk and stuff about how the first game is only Midgar got me thinking about how stepping out onto the wold map is one of the most iconic moments for both FFVII and the series as a whole. Naturally the amazing for the time graphics helped with that but goddam that music.

It really does deserve to be called the theme of the whole game. It embodies everything that is Final Fantasy VII. The wonder, the somberness, the grand scope and feel.... I don't think anything else really comes close in the whole Final Fantasy series. Gotta look to the Chrono games for better world map themes.

FFVI's World of Balance map theme is the best and I'll die for that.

I can't decide in VI between Terra and Searching for Friends, but they're both iconic. And the sheer gloom and doom of World of Ruin.

Yeah Terra's theme has gotta be my pick. I was sooo impressed when I first played FFVI and found out it was the map theme, and that was the GBA version!

I think Blue Fields is very nostalgic for me, although I really liked Eternal Wind as well but maybe that's because that song resonates with me a lot as a XIV player as well. Its really used well in Shadowbringers.

Searching For Friends is an airship theme. The goddam best airship theme but still not a world map theme.

It plays on the world map for the rest of the game in the WOR whether you're flying the ship or not.

I honestly don't remember that at all but I guess I'll take your word for it. I only re member this playing and I swear it plays during the entire WOR. But I did only play VI once so my bad.

That's the track that plays until you get the Falcon. It's replaced with Searching For Friends afterward.

Still, I agree the song is amazing and definitely a contender for best FF world map theme.

I will have more money to spare around December of January so I can hopefully get more storage space for FFXV. I don't have any modern consoles anymore anyway but I really want it on PC for the mods like keeping extra party members around, especially Iris.

FFXV has that FFXIII problem where they focus so much on the playable cast that they kinda neglect everyone else. It isn't as bad as XIII about this but it's still not gr eat.

I love me some party banter though. FFX started this and XIII was kinda okay with it but then XV was really good about it. XII...it was horribly unfair to his party in every way but not giving them any battle dialogue or travel conversation hurt it so much.

As much as accessing the world map in VII was an iconic moment, I feel like world maps are kind of 'of an era', when the technology couldn't give the detail to inbetween areas; FF games haven't had explorable overworld maps since IX, as far as I can recall. Also, people, myself included, often criticise later FF games for their linearity, but VII's overworld is quite linear too. Yeah, there are a handful of side areas and quests, but some of them aren't really meant to be explored until later on, and there's never much reason not to press on. Maybe it's that hint of things to come that disguises the linearity.

Anyway, I don't think it'd be the worst thing if VII-R lacked a world map. Maybe they could do it like XV's open world, to an extent. The area between Midgar and Junon could be wide open, with Midgar and Junon being areas in their own right. Or they could take the X/XII approach and not have an 'overworld' at all, just a series of connected locations.

You also have to take into account what the cultural difference on what being self assured is

Japan is... putting it mildly utterly ANAL at the prospect of being rude, So yeah Squall half heartedly apologizes for EVERYTHING thats what you do in japan.

however by western standards, thats not accomplishing Squall's goal of appearing like he has it all together by Western standards thats being a passive aggressive wiener!

so Squall in the west acts Aloof and cold and openly dismissive of what you think of him cause Your just an idiot peon blinded by your emotions and unable to think pragmatically/professionally

'Hence several accusations that Squall is heartless in disc 1 then again Rinoa doesn't seem to grasp the concept that people might get killed during her stunts'

Lets be honest You'd never see something like the Plate Drop in VIII the closest you get is the Trabia Garden stuff before THAT reveal but it revolves around Selphie who along with Irvine VIII doesn't know what to do with so... yeah

then again being fair to VIII, VII doesn't even know what to do with itself after the plate drop and just kinda quietly asks you to forget about it as we treat the turks more like those wacky punch clock villains who we kinda sorta respect instead of THOSE PSYCHOS WHO DROPPED THE PLATE ON INNOCENT PEOPLE!

You can respect bad people, too. The Turks are multifaceted. Honorable, goofy, ruthless.

Also who is AVALANCHE to judge? How many innocent people did they blow up at the start of the game?

Except the game at least addressed the fact that Avalanche killed people who may not have deserved it. It does not really do the same for the Turks’ act of mass murder.

It is kind of fucked up that they become more or less comedy relief later.
