Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

NT didn’t take off cause 3 v 3 sucks for a fighting game.

And it released smack dab in the middle of Monster Hunter World and Dragon Ball Fighterz on the PS 4

and Dissidia is a weird fighting game with atypical mechanics and controls that wouldn't of picked up in the west anyway

It's not just any one thing but I think the sum of its parts really didn't come together.

I've only played the first Dissidia but for me, I always thought of the first game as a one-off anniversary project to celebrate 2 decades of FF. After that, the novelty wore off and I didn't feel the need to pick up any more games. It doesn't really help that SE keeps leaning into nostalgia for its past games more and more and new titles fail to strike a chord with people.

The PSP Dissidias were actually good and quite a bit of fun, the character customization was insane, really can’t say the same for NT.

Duodecim in particular is packed with way more content than one would expect.

And it didn't sell a million copies after the first one sold over 2 million.

I don't think it being one on one or even feature rich would of saved it if everything else was the same.

One thing I will say in NT's favor is that its character interactions are surprisingly decent from what I've seen.

It's not perfect by any means, but definitely much better than I would have expected from the SE of today.

Also Ultimecia vs Shantotto is probably the best scene in Final Fantasy.

All the most popular fighters have really diverse rosters that can appeal to most people, and the more niche ones tend to not to.

As big a brand as FF is, I think Dissidia fits in the latter category because its roster is pretty same-y visually. If you don't like pretty boys, girls, or guys in heavy armor, you're SOL. Meanwhile something like Tekken or Smash has you covered no matter what sort of character you like.

I don't think that's particularly fair:

  • Smash Bros brings a lot of styles and franchises together. Dissidia draws from a much smaller pool.
  • Tekken was a new fighting game that needed to be loud and noticeable and build itself up. Dissidia doesn't really need to do that so having a "samey" roster is more forgivable.
  • Final Fantasy is a franchise full of pretty boys and girls and guys in heavy armor.
  • It is a pretty diverse roster - I don't mind pretty boys and girls and heavy armor dudes when we've got a sentient "cloud of darkness" thing, a living tree in the shape of a knight, a sports player, a barmaid martial artist, and a time-traveling valkyrie in the cast. All of that sh-t is pretty crazy when examined.

I'd rather a consistent visual theme than an aimless attempt at diversity in this case.

It wouldn't be aimless. Final Fantasy has a lot more than just its protagonists, villains, and a few extremely popular side characters to draw from, and it's probably not growing its base when those are the only ones it focuses on.

COD is a sentient cloud... who looks like a nearly naked young woman, and nearly identical to Ultimecia.

Exdeath is a sentient tree who looks like one of the other dozen dudes in heavy armor in the game.

And Tidus looks like a fucking mess of character design who is otherwise also another hot young guy like the vast majority of the cast. His dad is at least older and ruggedly handsome - it's not uniformly one note, but one or two exceptions does not a great fighting game roster make. You can call it skin deep to judge a set of characters by their visual design, but people do it all the time, and Dissidia cast's visual design is not diverse at all.

It's not the only fighting game that sticks to its guns and doesn't see any need to branch out - there are plenty of niche ones that do the same. But I don't know of any I'd call successful that don't make it a point to try to reach beyond a niche otaku crowd, and that's pretty much the only people who will buy Dissidia.

I mean you do get SOME diversity, I mean there are you have visual kei inspired pretty boys, pretty boy knights, some ordinary runway model pretty boys, a catgirl, the matron of the lollipop guild, the Goblin King, a beach hobo and some suits of armor!

Shanttoto remains the absolute best thing to happen to the the FF franchise institute of gaming since the dawn of time.

I got nothing against Dissidia at all but I will say they marketed it really weirdly. Most people don't even realize there are three games, just assuming that they're all remasters or re-releases of one.

I'd still prefer that Final Fantasy Musou.

I gotta admit I'm really liking FF's mobile offerings too. Brave Exvius is a lot of fun so far, and really the only reason it can't upset Fire Emblem Heroes is the annoying prevalence of Lost Forever. Just installed Mobius and one with a name that has Opera in it or something? I can't pronounce it.

Dissidia was actually the reason I gave this series a second chance.

I got into gaming in late 90s, when Final Fantasy was at it's most hype, and to me it suffered from Hype Backlash (not helped that I liked other JRPG like Phantasy Star series and Persona 2 much better, yet they were heavily overshadowed). I tried playing almost all FF up until that point, but the only ones I liked enough to finish were IX and XII (though, as it turned out, I played about 2/3 of V as well). However, Dissidia looked like an interesting cross-over that I wanted to check out, so I decided to play other games to know who is who. I still consider IV and VIII overhyped (yes, VIII used to be very popular), but I actually changed my mind about VII for the better.

Also, I ended up not liking original Dissidia too much (it is quite stilted and boring), but I loved Duodecim, it's my most played FF game by far. I don't have PS 4 and I get anxious playing with actual people, so I have no plans to play NT, but I love it's story mode, even though it is a little too short. OO is also on my "if one day I will have a good phone, I will play this" list.

I started with Duodecim because for all intents and purposes its basically a decent expansion pack for the original so I figured there was no point to the original. It being a prequel intrigued me but thankfully I heard it had the original game's story unlockable as well so I was all over that.

Dissidia NT looked okay at first but it kinda started going a bit...naff.

also why no playable rydia ffs

I've never played a FF before but I decided to try and play the first game on the NES Classic today. Some guy in the castle said to go Northwest to save a princess or something, so I went Northwest, made it to some dungeon (?), and died on my second battle. Tried again, died on my third battle.

NES-era RPGs really are something. I'm guessing you're supposed to grind, but the game doesn't tell you to do that.

Well, yes. NES JRPG's, in many ways, are dated even in comparison to many other games from the same era. Between the "where the fuck do i go", "why am i getting an encounter every 2 steps", among other things, they're not very approachable to a modern audience.

NES RPGs do usually expect you grind on the world map before every dungeon, yeah. Not only are the enemies in FF1's first dungeon a bit stronger than those outside the first town, but you start the game with no equipment or spells, just some gold to get you started, so you're expected to fight goblins and buy stuff before trying to enter the Chaos Temple.
