Because Kinkajou told me to.
So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?
My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.
I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Are the anti-Amano people pro-Nomura?

Listen. I think the guys art is pretty good (though I admit I've never been a fan of the white haired lipstick wearing pretty boy style for males period).
I just don't like how it's so different from the sprite art. Now if it's a matter of said sprites not being able to replicate his art style (if he drew the characters first) then I'll just deal with it, while still preferring those sprites.
But if it's him just saying nah! I'll just do my own thing! Screw those guys! then I got beef.
One Strip! One Strip!Man, the FFVI sprites could get quite close to Amano's art if FFVI's producers wanted, so the SNES could indeed have done it back then. Just look at Final Fantasy Record Keeper and Terra's Dissidia wardrobe, and remember the character sprites in RK are all based around the FFVI scheme.
Fucking hell, there's a hack for Final Fantasy V that replaces all battle sprites with the ones from Record Keeper.

Growing up, it's like a civil war, don't turn away, it's something you can't ignore...Why is everything so zero-sum around here?
You can like Nomura and dislike Amano, like both, or like neither. Opinions aren't these perfectly simple, singular things applicable to monoliths of people who all think alike otherwise.

Nomura is a horrible game director, but he also happens to be a superb character designer.
His very character art for Final Fantasy VII screams that much, and the PSX game, however bad the 3D models are, reproduce it to a tee.

Growing up, it's like a civil war, don't turn away, it's something you can't ignore...yoshida's still my favorite of the se artists. he's had his misses but his aesthetic is GOALS
You mean the guy who made the character art for the entire Ivalice Alliance?
Growing up, it's like a civil war, don't turn away, it's something you can't ignore...x5 I believe sprite palettes where more limited on the original SNES hardware then they are for the cellphones actually. So the sprites did call for simplified designs back then.
x6 Amano also did create the character designs first for the games, the exceptions where actually for Shadow and Setzer who Nomura did the sprite designs and then Amano created his illustrations based on those designs.

Am I only one who noticed Zidane's ponytail is barely visible in FFIX? Especially during cutscenes? In other media like Dissidia it's more defined which makes me wonder if they would do the same if FFIX were remade.
In Dissidia Zidane is a less stylized then he is in IX. So it depends on if they kept the art style cartoonier or if they updated it to be a bit more realistic.
I never noticed until recently Auron still had his ponytail from when he was younger. I thought it went away when he got "older."
Also Tidus' hoodie never once moves throughout FFX. I never noticed that either because of this. In contrast, in X-2's good ending, it bounces up and down as he walks. Amazing physics.
I do like Nomura's art, but maybe not as much as I used to, and yeah, Akihiko Yoshida is one of my favourite artists full stop, not just my favourite FF artist or concept artist.
Ya know, since Auron always planned to bring Tidus to Spira, why didn't he actually give him any sort of, I dunno, combat training?
Tidus can already body a grown man hard enough to send him flying while underwater.
I don't think there's really much Auron can teach.
This. He's got a ton of physical strength, he's incredibly acrobatic, and he's got the conditioning of a pro athlete. He just picks the rest up as he goes along.
I mean you could argue technique could help... but even then Auron is trained to fight primal monsters not enemy swordsman 'Even Auron's technique isn't all that great'
How to properly hold or swing a sword was all I was thinking.
A pro boxer is a dangerous thing but I wouldn't send them into a battlefield because do they actually know how to shoot a gun?
I mean Auron looked out for Tidus after his mother died but I don't think he was any proper sort of authority figure in his life.
Should have just given Tidus one of Wakka's blitzballs and he probably could have killed Sin in the first hour of the game

Guns are a whole other thing and a lot more dangerous to hand to a novice. It obviously takes a lot of skill and practice to get proficient with any weapon, but a sword's pretty simple relatively, and he's got lots of weak, mindless monsters to get started on before he learns the crazier stuff.
Speaking of, it's kind of interesting that everybody else gets new overdrives through other means like winning Blitzball tournaments or finding Jecht Spheres since they're all mostly pretty experienced, but he gets his by killing things, like he's learning more elaborate tricks as he goes along.

Who's the designer of Lulu's outfit? Seriously.
(Note that I'm talking in-universe.)
A guy who ate too much leather.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Or maybe someone who designed it in a back alley design studio.
Chappu had very specific tastes.
And what do you think those tastes were?
Amano is one of the best concept artists in the world
when he's not drawing single human characters.
Logos and monsters and scenery he knocks out of the park - most of his work for I and VI in particular is stunning.
