Strange that John's cousin would be a character we're just meeting now too—probably because they wanted a sister character, but John clearly is an only child outside of Ted living with him most of his life. I'm hoping that a lot of lampshades are given about the changes and potential inconsistencies certainly.

I'd say it's simpler than that and that it just wouldn't make sense. The whole point of the Ted premise is a living teddy bear in a normal world. Putting it in an animated world wrecks that.

He's still a teddy bear among people, animated or not. Brian being a talking dog isn't minimized because the show's animated. The one downside I can see is that between this, Family Guy, and American Dad (however long Zazlav lets that one run), I don’t think we’re getting another Orville season anytime soon.
