Page link, just in case. Didn't see a thread for this around, so here we are.

watched the anime over the weekend and I've been reading the manga. Been thinking how weird it is that Hitori never, ever wears the school uniform at all; she's not even got it on under that tracksuit.

... We didn't have a thread for this? Huh.

I watched the anime but haven't picked up the manga.

Should be good odds of getting another season. Two, maybe, if it does well—the anime only went up to ch21 and there's over sixty. [lol]

And yeah, no thread, I went back to the fall season and nada. Search didn't return anything either (pain as it is).

I'm just surprised there was no thread considering how deservedly popular this is. It's definitely getting a second season.

It was pretty much a sleeper hit, right?

Had to reprint the manga like three times and then it won a bunch of awards, yeah.

I guess people didn't make a thread and just used the relevant season one, it's not like there's often a ton to say about slice of life stuff. Unless you want to engage in overthinking (which I often do). [lol]

Since this now exists, might as well run this Adaptational Curves entry by.

  • Oddly enough, Bocchi the Rock! inverts it. In the original manga, it's quite clear that Bocchi is the curviest of her friends whenever she's wearing something that isn't her usual unflattering tracksuit; the anime, in order to keep a more cutesy art style, flattened her significantly. That is, until an in-universe Sex Sells joke is made, and we are suddenly treated to a shot of Bocchi that if anything looks even larger than her manga version.
I want to say this is a stretch because the only part where the trope even potentially applies here is in that Clickbait Gag, and IIRC the scene doesn't draw any more attention to Bocchi's chest than the manga's version of the scene does. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

... what, the game? Shouldn't the right people to be ask be the people who've had anything to do with that?

Aside from that, don't have a clue. And seriously, media forum threads are terrible things to use for fixing trope entries, that's the entire point of discussion pages... <_>

I loved this anime. Rewatched it full through twice, and several of the episodes additional times from that. Downloaded the whole album of Kessoku Band music, because there's literally an album's worth of music and that's awesome. Usually I'm all about those hard rock songs, and the ones in Bocchi are awesome, but I think I come away with the more mellow "If I Were A Constellation..." being my favorite song. And I love all four of the girls, as well as several of the supporting cast (Bocchi's two fans deserve nothing but good fortune).

This is one of those anime I regret not making a thread for, and figured I would make one when the inevitable season 2 drops. Well, no need for that now!

I actually started watching the series a while back since its actually available on Netflix where I live.

I think I relate to Bocchi a little too much, because I often expect people to approach me hoping they would share my interest. But I soon learn that's not how the world works.

[up][up] S2 faces an interesting conundrum in that there's nothing that would stand out as a centrepiece performance to build towards if the pacing wasn't super hurried up.

Although hardly that detailed, Gigguk also briefly discusses/praises Bocchi in his Best of Anime 2022 video, starting from 20:13 mark -

I personally think that both the original mangaka and the anime's director tried their best to avoid being a K-On clone...and succeeded in that regards with flying colors. [tup]

I mean, when you take specific decisions to not be a K-On! copy, then it is quite unsurprising that you... wind up with something that isn't. [lol]

It really is amusing how much the anime artstyle downplays Hitori's curves. Sure, they're not exaggerated, but you can still see she's GOT a figure under that baggy tracksuit. Or some of the manga's album cover replica stuff. Does make keeping any gags about selling on Bocchi's looks a bit weirder, since she just looks very... pink. Cut-in gag excepted.

I do think sometimes there's a bit of whiplash in how Nijika reacts to Hitori. In more comedic moments her comments can sometimes be rather biting, but in more earnest moments she seems to be pretty understanding and let Hitori work through her social anxiety at her own pace.

But then again, maybe I'm overly sensitive here. I like Nijika fine, she just seems a little... flip floppy sometimes.

[up][up] She is unfortunately the only person who can be a reliable straight man to Hitori's... Hitori-ness.

At least she generally seems to be better when it's not going and doing something completely bizarre. Seriously, I don't think Ryo's the bigger Cloudcuckoolander, Hitori has some plain bizarre associations even before she starts doing weird stuff to try and be extroverted. Like, for some reason she thinks Takeda Shingen is a funny thing that people will like, or makes sumo references, or... well, her manga sash is Finland Tourism Ambassador. [lol]

Is it even explicitly stated that Bocchi is specifically trying to not be aK-On copy? From my perspective, they're significantly different types of shows, only sharing the theme of starring girls in a band.

[up][up][up] For what it's worth, I think her tsukkomi is perfectly fine. I have never thought she was overly harsh with Bocchi.

Yeah, I personally never got any impression that Nijika was being harsh to Bocchi either.

Also, just bought the first two volumes of the manga...which I now come to greatly regret it.

I mean, what the hell was I even thinking. This is just like Ya Boy Kongming!, any manga about music is almost always going to inferior to anime adaptations. XP

Nijika is the Straight Man to the entire group, so while sometimes she's harsh with Bocchi, she's just as harsh with Ryo and Kita.

Ryo in particular tends to get it for mooching from Hitori.

This seems like the worst type of progression and story to stick into a movie, but I guess if it means we're more likely to get another season...

At least it's only the one and not multiple like with the last season of Pokémon Journeys. Hopefully.
