A LitRPG is a relatively new genre of books that focus on characters in a game world with RPG elements. Readers get to see them leveling up and overcoming challenges, usually with explicit character sheets. The original Russian LitRPGs were characters in an actual RPG, but many other variants have popped up over the years.

The Gamer is a famous example of a LitRPG, as well as not actually literature. I just finished up the He Who Fights With Monsters series, though apparently there's a new book out. Threadbare and Small Medium are great, basically an MMO from the point of view of the NPC, after the human players get trapped.

Anyone else have any obscure little LitRPGs they've enjoyed?

Sarah Lin's New Game Minus is very fun. It does expect a certain base knowledge of litRPG tropes, but it's a fun deconstruction without being mean, or losing the base fun behind litRPGs.

Gonna bump this because I've recently become obsessed with All The Skills, which is both a card-based deckbuilder and a LitRPG. People gain powers from magical cards. Arthur, a boy in a prison village, is forced to accept a stolen Legendary card because if he doesn't, the dragon who stole it will kill his entire family.

The first book is out on Amazon, the second one soon, and it's still ongoing on Royal Road.
