They also aren't "beasts".

The Obscurus is, being an uncontrollable parasitic force. The Obscurial that manifests it however is not.

Still, I feel that discussion about the dementors is better suited for the general Harry Potter thread since, as previously mentioned, they have nothing to do with this film specifically.

So besides a Qilin, what other creature shows up in this movie?

[up][up][up] Just to be clear, I’m being sincere in my questioning here (and previously): Why would one be considered a beast, but not the other?

A Dementor is capable of some rational thought, enough for people to make deals with them. They aren't just dangerous creatures.

The Obscurus manifested by an Obscurial otoh is a dangerous uncontrollable parasitic force that doesn't seem to be capable of higher reasoning. It more or less is just a dangerous creature.

A Dementor is basically a demon, but somehow worse.

[up][up] A dangerous, uncontrollable creature born of torture, no less. Which is why even Newt isn't trying to give it hugs.

Okay, get what you meant now. Got confused by the quotation marks.

So would Aragog’s intelligence be an outlier what would be normal for Beasts, not sure whether or not it was common among his species.

Some magical beasts, particularly those artificially bred, have some sapience it seems. Acromantulas and the creature they fear above all others, Basilisks, are both artificially bred creations of Wizards.

It is worth noting that the definition of "Beast" and "Being" in-universe isn't always clear-cut. Centaurs for example were considered "Beasts". At their own request no less since they refused to share "Being" status with Dark Creatures like vampires.

The in-universe classification for Dementors for the record is "non-being".

The Obscurus otoh isn't even treated as really alive but rather a dangerous magical phenomenon.

Yeah, says a lot when this movie's own thread is more interested in discussing things that aren't in the movie.

Yeah, only the first movie really lived up to the "Fantastic Beasts" part. Crimes of Grindelwald took a hard turn into "lore stuff and here's some token magical creatures once in a while" and looks like Secrets is continuing that.

So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my Tumblr

[up][up] And even the lore that gets revealed here isn't getting much discussion like Credence being Aberforth's son. I think most people aren't actually invested in his character or his arc about finding his family due to his bland character and constant fake outs for the latter.

Like Cosmonaught said it best, JK just isn't good at weaving long intricate plots.

[up] Nah don't worry about it.

There's something that looks like shoebill stork that inflates like a balloon, some little crab guys plus a giant version that's basically Moldarach, and some Diricawls (which apparently live on the streets of Bhutan like stray dogs and cats). Oh, and Teddy and Pickett, of course.

Speaking of them, I remember I was a bit confused when I saw the dirtyclaws in the first movie for the first time, since the book said they were actually Dodos the whole time and simply teleported away instead of being extinct like muggles thought, with the wizards preserving that idea because they thought the exctinction of dodos made the preservation of species a more important subject between the muggles. I wonder if they changed it because they thought it would be a bit distasteful to say a real-life species wasn't actually extinct or something of sorts.

oh hey how are you doing?

Or maybe dodos always looked like that. I mean, I've never seen one alive, have you?

Maybe the wizard illuminati changed the muggle idea of dodos so they wouldn't look like diricawls, but left the history of their "extinction" untouched.

Did they ever explain how Credence survive after his Obscurus rampage?

Ahh that sucks. And they never bring her up in the film either.

No. But he was always intended to survive as one of the deleted scenes shows him escaping. They just... cut it for some reason?

Did they ever explain how he "got rid" of his Obscurus too? Since it was weird he wasn't doing any Obscurus stuff in subsequent films.

The Obscurus is the manifestation of the repressed energy of the Obscurial. Credence isn't suppressing his magic in the later films anymore.

Unfortunately, this doesn't mean the Obscurus is gone. It's still a parasitic force inside Credence leeching away at him.

Is Film!Nagini and Book!Nagaini being the the same snake Canon? Why do people assume a woman from at least one generation before the latter's owner with an open disdain for her persecutors, who are cut from the same cloth as Tom Riddle's party would for some reason bow down to the latest pretender to the throne?

My impression was that Nagini was going to something so badass that snake face was going to name his snake after her, without regard to what she actually slithered for, or perhaps in spite of what she stood for. In CMLL Stuka and Lizmark are most definitely not Nazis(unlike Furia Roja, La Commandante and El Nazi, who are), but just thought the war machines were so awe inspiring they were worth taking the names of anyway...or for that matter it's not like the US Army names its machines after Apache weapons because it's fond of them. It's just respect for the undeniable fear their effectiveness generated.

For that matter, why do people have a problem with McGonigal teaching at Hogwarts? Identical Grandson is a thing, and in fact probably a thing that could be justified if talent for transfiguration runs in the family.

I've spent some time mocking the film's continuity failings, but I didn't even give those two details thought.
