A new Disney show is being made called Primos. It's created by Big City Greens director Natasha Kline. The show centers on Tater, an eccentric 10-year-old girl with big dreams and, unbeknownst to her, a certain “it factor” that makes her exceptional. When her 12 cousins (“primos” in Spanish) move in for the summer, they help her discover just what it is. Tater’s aspirations and larger-than-life imagination are seen via entries in her super-secret diary, which turn her deepest thoughts into grandiose animation sequences.

Which means brushing off the criticisms done by the Spanish-speaking community? That doesn't sound like a good excuse to me.
This is getting me vibes of the Cowboy Bebop Live Action with the way the actress indecently talks down to people, or the Marvel New Warriors about Safespace and Snowflake. It just gives me terrible vibes.
To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.> Which means brushing off the criticisms done by the Spanish-speaking community? That doesn't sound like a good excuse to me.
unfortunately so since their responses are just making things worse
New theme music also a boxThis is not comparable in the slightest to that. That was a misogynist backlash to the series over Faye.
And a lot of people reacting to the backlash are ALSO Latin Americans.
We are not a damn monolith. Let's maybe agree that harassment is bad and some of the discourse is ridiculous and toxic?
I think the biggest disconnect between all parties involved is the lack of understanding that Mexican/Colombian/Latino/Hispanic/etc is not the same once you add -American to the name.
No, just because you're a 3rd generation immigrant doesn't mean you understand Cuban culture or language better than an actual Cuban who's lived in Cuba all their life. No, just because the main character of X show is from a Colombian-American household doesn't mean their experiences are meant to reflect or represent the lives of Colombians in Colombia.
That's why many mexican-americans in southern California have created the Chicano identity, because they don't identify with white americans, nor do they identify with people from Mexico either.
Now, the aggressively defensive stance of the show creators claiming some sort of moral superiority over Latin American people and mansplaining them their own language, as well as dismissing their concerns is gross and offensive. Did Disney learn nothing from Coco and Encanto? Involve us and we'll love it. Exclude us and we'll hate it.
But also Latin Americans don't seem to understand that the experiences of a hispanic-american woman sharing her life experience is not meant as a commentary on the lives of every person in every country in latin america, she's just portraying her own personal experience.
- The following is no longer correct, the pic I was talking about wasn't the creators team. Just leaving it up for context:

white hispanic here. Hispanic people can have any skin color. I mean, just look at Argentina and see how many white people are there. There are Afro-Hispanic people, Asian-Hispanic people…Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. I'm sure some of the people in there were Hispanic.
Also, some of the people in the pic don't even work on the show. They had one of the Phineas and Ferb dudes in there (I honestly can't tell them apart), as well as Craig Bartlett, who is dating Natasha Kline.

This is precisely why trying to address through twitter posts was not a good idea,I don't think they meant to do that all but if people genuinely feel like they are guilty of doing this then no amount of trying to reason with the backlash is going to work.

She wrote something about "the show creators" on the caption of that pic and Dan Povenmire is literally the first thing you see which caused the confusion. I've done some research and Dan is the one that took that selfie and she posted it on IG as part of a carrousel and it was the 2nd pic, but since she privated her Instagram we can't even see what the first pic was anymore.
Yeah that's a lie that's been spread around, that the photo is of the crew when it isn't. Povenmire has nothing to do with this series. He's got like two shows he's working on.
Twitter? Spreading disinformation? Gasp! Neverrrrr!
"Did Disney learn nothing from Coco and Encanto"
I thought people liked those movies?
that's my point. They included tons of latin people on those (Coco even had a Mexican co-director) so they were received with lots of love and support from the Hispanic community worldwide, because they felt it was a proper representation of those two cultures (Mexico and Colombia). This feels like a step back.
It is worth noting that Coco wasn’t without criticism, notably in the discussion over how the setting relies on a caste system and border security, which the story does not really interrogate. But these came after the film was out, not before, so they attracted much less attention in the movie’s overall reception.
Look Imma be honest and put my two cents as a somewhat ignorant but terminally online colombian young adult. It's mostly G.I.F.T theory put in practice, it's not really that deep at the end of the day. I recall that the earliest reactions in my TL to the announcement were just comparisons to the Loud House and the whole cultural thing didn't take off until later and a lot of people jumped on that. Mind that I'm not saying that there aren't some folks that have genuinely feel offended (Especially since at least on Twitter I definitively seen tons of people being... defensive on their cultures and how it is portrayed, to say the least) but at the same time I can't help but feel that some others are just thrashing on the show for the evulz and that if you would interrogate them they don't really care that much at all about the whole thing.
Dr. Amigo es diosI've literally seen a lot of Latin Americans online say that Coco and Encanto are just American media banking on "diversity" and that nobody outside of the U.S. actually likes them. Which is obviously wrong and stupid as hell to say, but it's not exactly an uncommon opinion from what I've observed.
With the Primos discourse, it's a sign of how creators of color (or minority creators in general) get hit harder over representation by their own community. It's a thing a LOT of people have put up with, whether they be non-white, queer, or anything else.
andWell there was the whole issue about using the grandma and apparently not even citing her likeness?
Anyway as for me I am hands-off with this since it's clearly not for me and the artstyle is definitely not my type. Although I do have from experience had this disgusting encounter of how diaspora Filipinos wear their ethnic nationality as some exotic flaunting.
If i could continue on this point, harasssment is for sure not good, and Twitter (plus some other social media) is absolutely known for piling on a point and overblowing it to no end, this i feel is coming from at the very least, an understandable place.
Wanting to make a show representing latino culture is gonna put pressure on your show from those people who you want to represent. You have to at least know accurately how to make the culture from those countries and, if you don't have some initial knowledge on your hands already, investigate and apply your research unto your media.
Coco may've had flaws on some spots and trying to coin the Dia de los muertos was definetly a bad idea, but the story, setting and characters were definetly researched well enough for Disney to confidently air it on Mexico first, and they loved it.
Now of course a show like this has considerably less resources than a Pixar movie and all, but it doesn't mean it can't also make some good representation if they wanted.
Amphibia, from what i've seen, has made some pretty great representation of the Thai community, with the mom of the creator happily participating as a character, and having episodes dedicated to exploring their culture (in the third season sure, but hey i'm sure they may have appreciated it).
From what we've been shown of this show, this... doesn't look too well researched.
When the response of people asking "hey, isn't this spanish phrase from your latino show grammaticaly incorrect" is bypassing them as hateful and then saying that spanish was enforced unto latin america, is when i feel like they haven't researched it well, and pushing them to do so is only gonna make them refuse to change even more.
I'm not in favour of harassing them, making shows is stressful, and sudden angry responses is nothing new, but i would expect this from a Web made show, or something of the like. Not a show officially endorsed by Disney. The bar is high, and this is not clearing it.
Due to unfortunate events, i will continue to exist until further notice. At the very least, they should say that it is an intentional thing. I can respect it if it's intentional.

God that "yeah? well... language = colonialism" was the hottest of takes I've ever seen. And it made it clear to me that at least the VA really has no intention of meeting anyone halfway, she just went full defensive.
I get it that some of these people may be new to the attention they're receiving but... yikes. Maybe go for a walk and touch grass for a bit before picking up your phone and recording yourself when you're receiving hate online, or you might end up saying something like that on camera. And the internet is forever.
If the premise was clear about it being the creator's experience it wouldn't be so bad, but apparently it isn't. It definitely has that "other people telling what part of our culture is right" feeling.

The response video about not bothering with getting the language right because Spanish was the language of the oppressors is definitely so baffling.
I said this earlier, but with how generations are born learning their country's common tongue, far earlier than they're ever taught about history, it's stupid to pretend spanish is not worth respecting because it's not part of the culture. That's like saying the english language is not part of american culture and not worth learning.
Anyways, if they wanted anonymity, they shouldn't have joined the industry to begin with. People are voicing dissatisfaction however they can, and the creators should be prepared to assume the consequences of their choices. I'm wondering how much of the backlash could have been avoided had they at least got the lyric right.
Ironically Hey Primos would have been perfectly acceptable in Spanish
chuck lorre vanity cardOh yeah I saw the video. That's a big yikes. No wonder the backlash became massive.

It was LITERALLY clear. She's openly talked about this being based on her own experience growing up. That singular experience is not going to speak for all of Latin America.
This is literally saying they should accept the harassment or just...never join the animation industry? That's supremely fucked up.
I saw that first image and read the summary, I thought the main complaint would be the show being a ripoff of The Loud House, but with cousins instead of siblings.
The actual s**tshow I'm witnessing right now was COMPLETELY unexpected.
DAMMIT MARK, STOP HOTTING HELPY!!
I think they really need to stop trying to address the backlash because its become obvious at this point whatever points they are trying to make just aren't getting across
