With Dune it's "read the books by Frank but not his son!"

seriously those are garbage

I'd ask what happens in those books but that would prolly be major spoilers in a film thread.

Without any specific spoilers:

Brian's a bad writer for one. Part of big finale to the series is a literal Deus Ex Machina, followed by the mother of Ass Pulls. The series spans roughly seven thousand years (!) and Frank did establish a way for old characters to return, I can't imagine he intended for ALL of them to do so. Brian brings them all back for . . . reasons. It's barely justified in-universe, "I don't know, let's do it because we can, maybe some good comes of it?" He basically wanted to give most of the cast a faerie tale ending.

He's milking the shit out of the series. Frank wrote nearly seven books. Brian's done like 17, if I recall? We needed the finale, sure, but he bloated it to two books. The Jihad prequel would have been alright if I thought it resembled anything Frank had to say about it. But so many unnecessary midquels. There's a 15 or so year gap between the first and second books, the sequel is about the consequences of that period and sets up what we need to know about what happened. Brian's latest trilogy (?) is showing us everything that happened in that period.

The Dune Chronicles has two major themes: beware your Hero and stagnation will doom you. Brian doesn't understand either of these. Like the reason computers were outlawed in the Jihad is because relying on them made us lazy and inhuman, that's in the later books. Brian took that to the brilliant, uncharted waters of "the robots tried to kill us". There is a big climatic conflict brewing in the last books, but I'm pretty sure it's meant to be a transhuman crisis and not an extinction war.

There's a lot wrong with his work, and in the unlikely case we get the entire series on film, we might get to Brian's awful finale. I'm hoping we get the first trilogy, Dune->Children. I'm damn curious how you film the rest of the series, but I can live without it if it keeps us away from adapting Brian's books.

For those who aren't familiar with the books: You have the first three books, Dune, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, focusing on the time period in the movie, then in Book 4, God Emperor of Dune, you have a massive time skip of several thousand years, still following one character from those first three books. Either Book 3 or Book 4 would make a decent place to end the film series. There's a time skip of several thousand years after that, before Books 5 and 6. Book 6 ends without resolving the main conflict, and Frank died before finishing Book 7, so if you adapted Books 5 and 6, you'd have to either alter something, or you'd have to adapt Brian's work afterwards.

The miniseries went to the end of Children of Dune and it actually kind of merged Dune Messiah and Children of Dune relatively well, given the small budget.

I think the most could manage would be Children of Dune. God-Emperor would need some heavy overhauling to make it even close to cinematic. Like, how would you even begin to film that rock climbing scene? [lol]

I believe the director has said that if he could he would want to take this as far as Messiah

Dune and Dune Messiah are basically Paul's rise and subsequent fall as a messiah figure.

Children of Dune is about his children's rise and the coda to Paul's own story.

God Emperor of Dune is when shit gets weird.

Probably because it's not like the previous trailer where there was all of that action. I imagine they'll save that either for subsequent trailers or the movie itself.

Meaning Channel can never experience oceans for herself.
