After 4 years in TRS, we've finally swapped the old description for a more fitting one. Now, we have to move onto the next phase of the cleanup- finding and fixing/removing misused wicks.

What is The Dragon? Well, it's the right-hand counterpart of the Big Bad, and the Evil Counterpart of the heroic Number Two. If this sounds obvious, keep in mind that the old description was actually describing something much different- the Campbellian concept of the Penultimate Threat, not the Big Bad's most loyal minion. Our job here is to make sure the wicks fit the new definition of the trope, and find somewhere else for the old definition wicks to go.

[up] Or as Square Peg, Round Trope put as the original description, “a minion of the Big Bad who was stronger than the Big Bad, representing more of a physical challenge to the protagonist while the Big Bad represented a mental one.“ Just in case you don’t understand what the Campbellion Concept of the Penultimate Threat actually means.

Say, are we going to have a seperate trope for that or is too specific to be a trope?

[up] There was a lot of discussion of making a TLP trope "Campbellian Dragon" or something, but IDK if it ever panned out.

I took a shot at updating Square Peg Round Trope but the wording came out clunky. Didn't want to take up too much of this thread going back and forth on it when there's so much misuse to clean up. If anyone wants to rewrite it further, though, please feel free!

Sorry for bumping after just under four years of inactivity, but since TRS agreed to take cleanup here, I figured it was important enough for that to be done.

This TRS thread expanded The Dragon's definition a bit, and decided to defer cleanup to this thread.

The following restrictions were loosened:

  • The Dragon no longer has to be subordinate to a Big Bad, and can be subordinate to another type of villain.
  • The Dragon does not need to be an example of Number Two, and can be a different type of subordinate.

The description was rewritten accordingly.
