First of all, wiki has an article under "2019–20 coronavirus pandemic".

While the outbreak started around New Year's Day (12/31), it's picking up steam around the Asia-Pacific region especially since Mainland Chinese people tend to travel a lot.

For reference, the BNO Newsroom twitter has a special feed for any info on the coronavirus:

The WHO has page about COVID-19 and any other concerns people may have. I suggest peeps go to the Q&A page to check for official details.

I’m a rare case of someone who got chickenpox twice, as you don’t always develop a full immunity.

The U.K. by the way still doesn’t do routine vaccination for chickenpox, you only get the vaccine if (alongside by over 9 months and not having had the disease) “you're in regular or close contact with someone who's at risk of getting seriously ill if they get chickenpox,”.

@WillKeaton: Sorry to hear that. :(

Since you mentioned it, in that case, why do the commercial people keep making it sound like shingles is only an old people problem? :S

I know right, I also got it back in the day when it was still common. That used to be so normal people didn't even give it that much thought.

Man don't worry, I've had MUCH worse than Shingles. That went away in a week from taking a pill. As to why it's seen as an old people disease, the elderly do have weaker immune systems. Now, I am also on medicine that leaves me immunocompromised, so that might be why I caught Shingles. Or it may have nothing to do with it at all...

Three women contract HIV from dirty “vampire facials” at unlicensed spa: Five patients with links to the spa had viral genetic sequences that closely matched.

Vampire facials use blood plasma injections into the skin for rejuvenation. It's really popular with the hip crowd, apparently. A real Elisabeth Bathory treatment for the modern age.

And when you combine that with unlicensed spas that improperly store blood and reuses needles and that sort of unsanitary thing, you get HIV infections.

So think twice about taking those vampire facials, and always check the credentials of your spa (and tattoo artist, for that matter).

Oh, shit. Better cancel my appointment to have the blood of five virgins injected into my veins for rejuvenation therapy.

(As I say that, I know there are wealthy people who believe in blood replacement.)

There is some evidence that blood replacement actually works ... but unlike in fiction, the donor bodies probably don't mind having their blood taken.

(Is there any systematic research on the effects of blood donation on aging?)

Worth noting that these "vampire facials" use your own blood. They draw your blood, the platelets are separated out, and the platelets + plasma are injected back into your face.

The HIV spread was from reusing needles without properly sterilizing them first, not from injecting HIV-infected blood into uninfected people.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

The way they were handling blood in that spa, though, I wouldn't be entirely sure of that, either.

Alright, I'll concede that there's a difference between transfusing blood from one person to another and "merely" performing a cosmetic procedure under unsanitary conditions. Still makes me concerned about the kind of person who would seek out such treatment.

Yes, I know, liability laws and all that, but come the fuck on. What did these people think they were getting?

This is the sort of "alternative" beauty treatments celebrities like Kim Kardashian West like to peddle. It's, unfortunately, not all that fringe, and I'm sure appeals to the same demographic that loves Twilight and anything to do with vampires.

What I hear is that we should blame Twilight. Fine by me.

...

It's still not satisfactory, though, even tongue-in-cheek. There must be some line where personal accountability comes into play.

Re the misconception of shingles being a disease of The Olds: my insurance won't cover Shingrix for anyone under 65, regardless of underlying medical conditions (immunocompromised, whatever). My sister has had it since age 7, when we both caught chickenpox. She still has outbreaks some 45 years later.

Let's see what fresh fuckwittery the dolts can contrive to torment themselves with this time.

To be clear, I'm not saying we shouldn't have product liability laws or health and safety regulations. I'm saying that these people are displaying a gross lack of concern for their own well-being that can't be justified by "I want to look like [x]." We can't fix stupid, but we shouldn't tolerate it either.

Oh, I agree, though part of it may simply be ignorance of the risks, or an attempt to save on costs by going to the cheaper, unlicensed spa.

Also, we should consider that the unsanitary practices may not have been visible to the customers at all. An unwary customer may not think anything of someone coming in with a tray of already unsheathed needles, for instance.

Your reaction is a bit like blaming restaurant goers for going to a restaurant with an unsanitary kitchen, when those customers could well not have been in a position to notice in the first place. Customers usually don't get to see what the kitchen in a restaurant looks like, after all.

I don't know what the situation was there, either. People may well simply not think to ask. I mean, when I go to a restaurant, I don't ask the owner for their catering license either, and I imagine they'd give me some strange looks if I did.

It's really easy to be this super critical in full hindsight, but most people simply aren't that suspicious or on guard all the time in every situation where such fraud or health code violations may occur.

Reminds me of all the kids nowadays who are apparently influenced by short video scam artists to spend tons of money on (or just steal) adult make-up and facial products that are way too strong and harsh for young skin.
