I realized something about my writings...

Each one of them includes a not-quite Three Amigos that was once a tragic Love Triangle.

• In a really old quiz bowl story idea I had, the co-captains of the protagonist quiz bowl team are the Official Couple while their friend was basically Hiei if he was into music and the arts.
  • Another example in the same work is two Childhood Friends and an American transfer student, except that the boy and the American girl were more like bros to each other but it did not stop his childhood friend from getting mad about it. Despite the freshman childhood friends being the main leads they are more like a Beta Couple compared to the two captains of their quiz bowl team.

• My most recent WIP about high school girls' basketball had the co-captains of the girls' team (captain and vice) and the captain of the boys' team of the protagonist school. The latter two were Childhood Friends, until they met the other girl in middle school. She initially didn't know anything about basketball at all and only tried to surpass her more talented and popular older twin sister. She learned how to play the game very quickly and eventually led their old middle school team to the national championship in just her second year.
  • The following year, however, the two girls were fighting for the affections of the boy. Then the now girls' captain got a serious knee injury that almost ended her playing career when the now girls' vice-captain challenged her to a duel for the now boys' captain's affections. He got so mad at her that he temporarily ended their friendship, but of course all three of them got back together as the girls' vice-captain gave up her feelings for the boy just so he can forgive her for what she did.

I am not really sure if both storylines are too cliche or how I can make them more interesting to readers. Any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.
