So I was browsing the Military Mage trope and it got me thinking; What happens when you do that with Psychic Powers?

With that in mind I came up with a setting where psychics are (somewhat) known and real. The thing is though, they are a minority born with it, only one psychic ability per person, and its set during what would be the 70's or 80's.

My question is what would psychics be used for professionally? It could be mundane or military.

What can these psychics do? That's the first and most important question.

  • Telepathy would revolutionize diplomacy and espionage. Like, completely.
  • Clairvoyance would also revolutionize espionage, both political and corporate.
  • Precognition would, well, revolutionize everything from insurance to gambling to ... everything.
  • Telekinesis would be relatively mundane, but could have significant uses in industry and transportation depending on how it works.

A good reference work for a human society in which psychic powers are not only known but trained and used commercially and militarily is Anne McCaffrey's Talents series, although it's mainly focused on the science fiction aspects of such a setting.

Considering psychic powers are sci-fi's answer to magic?

Let's consider some of the other powers and how they can be used, assuming they're all stock.

How would Empathy be used for instance. What about Mediums too?

You're asking questions that are far too broad to be meaningfully discussed. You're also creating a lot of threads.

Before going any further, please consider what you're trying to accomplish. If you are building a world for an actual work you're creating, then try consolidating everything into one topic and giving details, then asking the questions.

Otherwise it seems like you're doing this randomly and without purpose.

Psychic powers aren’t sci-fi, they’re magic. They can do or be anything you’d like.

They should have sent a poet.

You are right that its magic but the laconic page for Psychic Powers says, and I quote, "Magic, Sci-Fi style."

[up] I think that’s more referring that the names of psychic powers are usually more “scientific”, not that psychic powers are in any way scientific. They’re not. They may as well be Harry Potter-style magic as far as what they can do and how they work are concerned.

They should have sent a poet.

I was thinking about something similar. You could have psychic powers used in solving crimes, like a psychic detective could tell if somebody is lying or hiding something either by reading their mind or their emotions or use some kind of extra-sensory perception.
