[up] Were you referring to past Sonya and past Jax? I guess as they left Outworld before past Kung Lao wiped the floor with Quan Chi and Shang Tsung as past Raiden appeared. However, as I said, past Sonya would have met past Johnny at that point. I mean, past Johnny acts as bad as he did we we first saw him in MK 9, suggesting that he came from a time before he entered Shang Tsung's tournament.

She knows who he is all through MK 11's story. She's still mostly repulsed by him at that point, though.

Johnny didn't gain any real humility until whatever it is that happened to him in his late 20s, too.

Can we appreciate Johnny Cage for kicking the shit out of Johnny Cage?

My favorite part is when he grabs him by the ear and drags him out of the war room like he's 8

The character that's got me scratching my head is Kabal.

He acts as if he isn't already scarred but wears the mask and has his super speed.

The mask is one thing. Could just be something he did in the bad old days and could even by why Kano rebuilt him with it, but wasn't the super speed explicitly tied to his scarring and rebuilding?

On that note, do we know the past characters are from MK9 and not an Alternate Timeline? The way they talk, such as appearing right when Kung Lao defeated Quan Chi and Shang Tsung, and the fact that their future selves can be Ripple Effect Indicators suggests that they are the MK9 kast, but their different outfits and a couple little things, like Skarlet's importance, don't line up, and there's enough time shenanigans going on I could take the ripple effect thing as a side effect of their simply existing at the same time and place linking them regardless of timeline.

I recall 9 had always crowds of randoes that included Skarlet for some reason.

I will take it as a similar timeline of events as 9, only with a few key differences that were introduced later (The presence of Skarlet and Black for example)

That may also explain the retcon in Skarlet's backstory. In that timeline she was a street urchin that learned blood magic from Shao Kahn. In the MKX timeline she is Ermac 2.0. but with blood not souls.

do we know the past characters are from MK 9 and not an Alternate Timeline?

Given it's a major plot point that killing the past version of a character kills the future one, it seems a given.

I'd assume that the game sticks to a Broad Strokes version of MK 9's events. Just with small non-story impacting details changed. Outfits, Skarlet being around enough for people to recognize her but not doing anything important (She presumably hung out as one of Shao Kahn's goons, not participating in the tournaments).

I mean Kenshi, Reiko, Rain and various other characters were supposedly running around

I mean unless they do the impossible and do an Old School Expansion Pack Add on

'I'm not talking DLC character packs, I'm talking like Enemy unknown/ Enemy Within style shit where the core game is for the most part expanded exponentially

which adds a Second Story mode to provide follow up and closure

XII has to deal with Timeline Shenanigans and Really that be kinda 4 out of Three Games about Timeline shenanigans

It be kinda like DC and Events... The Fatigue is gonna set in

All these contradictions with how past games work is why I'm not that impressed with how the story is told these days. We had yet to be told how Armageddon canonically ended when Midway went bankrupt. When we were finally told about it in MK 9, Boon and company apparently forgot about Taven. In fact, when we shown Raiden sending visions to his past self, what was in those visions were contradictory like Reptile, Kung Lao, and Baraka in Shang Tsung's tournament from the very first game.

Then this game's plot twist with Kronika shows that she had reset time before Raiden sent those visions. It would have been easier to justify contradictions as alternate timelines that run concurently with each other and that Kronika decided to combine them all as her scheme.

Here is the thing

The guys at NRS don't sweat those kind of details, Sorry for you Canon Hounds but They've always played fast and loose with the story

and technically they did give a canon answer... Shao Khan won, with only Shinnok' cause apparently they remembered the whole Doombot plot point' and Taven 'once they remembered oh yeah that guy' surviving

Now Granted I didn't really get the whole Liu Kang and Raiden turning on each other was always the link in the chain...

I mean Kang's Death is clearly the brick that caused the original timeline to spiral down its doomed path

The really weird thing is why Kronika brings people to foil her. You can assume she really believed she could sway past Liu Kang / Kung Lao and Kitana to her side and end up with a double set to help her, and she just was massively optimistic fine.

But why does she bring Sonya and Johnny Cage? Why bring Raiden?

The simple answer, is Raiden has to exist due to immortal god hax 'Which brings up the question how Cetrion could possible kill the other Elder Gods since they can't DIE which is a plot point

The Shao stays dead cause Ermac ate his soul

Cetrion feeds herself to Kronika

Raiden gives up his god essence to Liu

I'd assume its due to the random nature of the Time rifts since it Brings back Baraka and his Clan when Kotal outright says the Tarkatan are extinct following the War with Mileena

Kronika just doesn't seem that good at her job... I mean She leaves Shinnok Headless... Woman he is your damn son put him back together!

They're more interested in entertaining than telling a cohesive story. Always have been.

This game's story more or less exists to retcon away the new continuity and come up with a new one, anyway.

Maybe we will finally see what Lucifer is.

Or maybe have an antagonist that isn't from Outworld or Netherrealm for once.

She also doesn't bring Quan Chi. You'd think her son's most loyal servant would be an asset right? you'd think Quan Chi would be all over team "lets remake time so Shinnok lives and does his thing!"

So I wonder if the pre-Armageddon timeline is the first timeline?

It's the only one where Raodem and Liu Kang don't come to blows from what I've seen.

oh definitely getting rid of Dark Raiden so quickly so you could have normal Raiden

reduces the significance of the story beats at the end

IE It finally clicking when Past Liu stands up to him

Him being so quick to turn to the amulet and start torturing Scorpion 'when like a chapter earlier he doesn't even want to touch the thing out of fear of its dark corruption'

and how much more powerful would it be as Raiden's Red eyes return to their natural blue as he utters the Words

"I'd Rather Save You"

I'd almost assume Dark Raiden was in mind for the final stretch but like with scripting... How do you get Dark Raiden from the Beginning who kinda brushes off Sonya's Death to Dark Raiden at the end who can no longer bare to see his allies die

They couldn't figure it out so they just had Normal Raiden take over

They don't strictly come to blows but Dark Raiden does wind up rezzing him as his undead slave so they're not exactly on friendly terms.

Yeah but that version of Dark Raiden was always an implied case of Came back wrong

Maybe Kronika initially tried just separating them (Liu Kang's death at the hands of the Deadly Alliance). That didn't work because Dark Raiden bought Liu Kang back as an undead in his service. This meant their combined power was still in play. When Raiden hits the Reset Button, Kronika sees this failed and opts instead to turn them against each other.

For why Kronika brought people who could stop her in, maybe that's just the opposite but equal reaction to her actions. If there's a need for balance, Kronika bringing certain people in also causes others to be affected. Flip side, there's an amount of "Target of opportunity" involved. She wanted Shao Kahn, but the best point to get him was also where Team Raiden was.

I just love how in that chapter how Scorpion looks like an innocent puppy after Raiden lashes out at Liu Kang.

His expression screams "don't taze me bro, i swear i won't kill that motherfucker this time"

Since the discussion in the main thread turned spoilery, I'll say it here. I honestly like D'Vorah here even more than in X, mostly because her fatalities are the best (ie most horrifying) in the game. Her killing Scorpion doesn't bother me too much, because the resulting Scorpion that we got is the best of both worlds (the undead nature of Past Scorpion with the character depth of Present Scorpion).

It's been 3000 years…
