[up]IIRC that's precisely how Darth Bane's wraith was portrayed in clone wars, though it was more of the "firey apparition" type of glow.

I find it appropriate that if Sith live on after death, it's a Came Back Wrong scenario, a half-life. Like in KOTOR II Darth Sion finds immortality, and it's him putting his body back together as a mass of scars that's constantly in pain and only lives on raw hatred. Palpatine could be a ghost trapped in Death Star wreckage, refusing to accept the end and lashing out at everyone to spitefully get back at others

[up][up]I'm pretty sure Bane is an illusion but if Palpatine appears as a spirit like how Bane looks in Clone Wars I would most certainly not complain.

Ever since I saw that my mental image of Bane while reading Bane is him helmeted, voiced by Mark Hamill.

Remember: Sith can also possess objects. Momin possessed his helmet after death and would take over anyone who wore it. It's possible that Palpatine did the same thing.

Ok, what would you possess if you were Sheev? Cane? Hoodie?

So then the heroes has to go to Mustafar to destroy a ring that Sheev has possessed.

You know, they could even have a horcrux Palpatine and I would respect that. That would reiterate that devotion to the dark side makes you lose something. And the idea that someone could journey into the force astral plane and find a Palpatine apparition would also work.

The thing about force ghost immortality being exclusively non-dark side (most Jedi didn't understand it either) is basically written into Canon, between the information given in the movies and especially that Yoda arc of the Clone Wars. To say dark side force ghosts are legitimate and equal to the light side would be the biggest retcon of the sequel era.

Honestly, I kind of hope episode IX at least hints towards something like the Whills. It's what George Lucas was aiming towards for the sequels and the Yoda Arc really started setting up that kind of lore shift.

Involving possession, body control, evil clones, or outright resurrection sound like the most boring and convoluted answers you could possibly conceived to do... I don't even know what. I hear all this absolute nonsense on using clones and what not and I can only ask, to what end? Why? Just... why?

Honestly, what would be the point to bringing back Palpatine in such a, and I'll note again, convoluted manner? Is it to give another big bad we can just... throw down a vent shaft if not the exact same one he was thrown down before? Is it to deflect Kylo's demons off onto someone else that is larger and worse for the purposes of redeeming him and making his choices not his own (and creating a flacid parallel to Vader's redemption)? Is it to... pull off some shocking reveal in the third act that isn't built towards and adds very little?

What can you possibly achieve with Palpatine as a full villain with agency in the plot that we can't achieve right now with the cast we have?

That's why I think him being a Force Ghost (Wraith?) is the best option. I'll stand by that he should have an affect on the character in the sense he existed; His actions on Vader and Vader's own decisions lead to Kylo worshiping Vader so Kylo IS an extended consequence if you want to think of a larger picture. But he shouldn't have agency in the plot as the characters move across the board. Kylo was not some long running chess match. If it were, surely the Emperor could have saved his own ass 40 moves ago.

And, if he comes back, who even has stakes in that kind of a return? Basically every character that actually knew of him are dead by now. The one who would have the most stakes in such a return just died and became one with the force last film. Would Leia? No, she didn't know him and she's also going to have a send off in this film too so that can't go anywhere either. Chewie? R2? C 3 PO? They're barely characters in this cast! Poe or Finn? They don't have any personal stakes in any of our antagonists now (unless you count Poe's comedic routine with Hux?). Rey? ALL of her stakes are on Kylo being the big bad.

There's just absolutely nowhere for this idea to go unless it is something far more minor. And getting into Kylo's headspace and exploring that with another character (since we lack Rey doing that now) makes perfect sense. You could do so much with Palpatine being in Kylo's head. Maybe Kylo believes himself to be a peer of the great Lord Vader and it solidifies his claim to the remaint of the Empire? He's hardened his heart and it silences the doubting light in his heart once and for all. Or maybe Kylo is confused and anguished that its Palpatine that is influencing him and not Vader himself and maybe has to even learn that Vader, his true hero, did go to the Light Side before death? That the fact that Vader CANNOT be his master because he's not on Vader's side of the force re-opens the door and feeds the doubt in his heart. Or maybe some other idea I cannot conceive.

But there's no point to him being a full character here.

They'll go to the Death Star wreckage and just see Palpatine's and Yoda's ghosts sitting and playing holochess with each other.

So, I had another strange dream about the movie. This time it was that Palp's ghost dind't actually haunt Ben, but rather Luke manipulating him in a discrete way, culminating in Luke believing that Ben was a strong dark user and leading to that fateful night.

[up] Funny you should mention that because the guy that wrote it is running a drive to have Supernatural Encounters illustrated. If you donate $50 or more, you get your very own limited-edition physical copy; he hopes he can include Cult in the copy too in addition to Supernatural.

A little something to wet our appetites until more of the movie comes out. Some lightsaber swordfight edits.

New novels! Somebody at LF must've been reading Zephyr's mind because one will be devoted to the good guys replenishing their forces between movies, thereby addressing the criticism that the Resistance ends TLJ in completely hopeless straits.

[up]...If it doesn’t happen in a movie, it shouldn’t count, but at least there’s a reference. I don’t suppose the Noghri exist in this continuity...

To be fair I would say TLJ heavily implied that the events of the movie created a lot of support for The Resistance.

This book clarifies that's happened, and it would be pretty easy for Rise to simply state that's happened.

The Visual Dictionary also says that a lot of the Resistance on D'Qar was split up and moved to other cells in preparation for the evacuation, since the Resistance knew the First Order would be coming for them. The ones that got onto the Raddus and the other ships were the last of them, hence why we don't see any of the more familiar pilots during the space combat scenes.

Also, Noghri do exist in the new canon, one was in Rebels serving Thrawn.

"Rebuilding" sounds interesting, but it'll probably still be the trio and a few dozen Halloween costume aliens hiding in the ass end of the Galaxy come Episode IX. I have zero faith in this material showing a general uprising, the building of an army and fleet, or a Galaxy that wants to save itself. I'm keeping my expectations rock bottom so I can find something to like in IX.

But I guess it's a step in the right direction.

...I'm coming up on a blank about a Star Wars movie that didn't star mostly humans as the main characters, with one alien and a few droids thrown in there. Like, that's all. That's pretty much what Star Wars does.

Humans are more relatable because people can connect to them more.

It's admittedly pretty boring at this point, but that can at lest be excused as not wanting to subject actors to painful or toxic facepaint every film. The upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order game having a human protagonist, never mind being another white dude, is the real missed opportunity due to all the bipedial aliens we could have gotten to play as.
