In an interview with DiscussingFilm, The Nee Brothers talk a little about the upcoming Netflix film:

To end off on that, if you could tell the fans one thing about what you’re aiming for with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, what would that be?
  • Aaron Nee: We’re treating it a little bit like an origin story, and that’s part of the inspiration behind casting Kyle Allen because he has that fresh wide-eyed wonder but is also just an incredible athlete. He’s a great way to bring audiences back into Eternia and rediscover it together.

  • Adam Nee: I think it’s the fun aspect, you know? I’ve heard from some fans that their dream [for Masters of the Universe] would sort of be like Lord of the Rings, but you can’t have characters like Snout Spout in Lord of the Rings! So I think that we are maybe more in the Thor: Ragnarok kind of tone where it’s a huge adventure film, but we have fun and there’s a good amount of reverence in there as well.

  • Aaron Nee: We’re not hiding from the wild, crazy aspects of the property. It’s part of what made us love [He-Man] to begin with and we’re embracing those elements as well.

Funny enough, I’ve been telling people for years that Thor: Ragnarok is a pretty good He-Man movie when you really think about it.

  • Adam Nee: You’re right! It is the best He-Man movie ever.

Ok, this worries me since I'm not a huge fan of Ragnarok.

I prefer things like CGI He-Man cartoon, Sonic movies, Batman Brave & Bold. Sure, don't take yourself too seriously but at the same time, embrace the Narm Charm and don't just say "Thor is such s ridiculous concept, just turn him into a huge joke."

Look at Transformers, this is a franchise that did a good job treating was between space robots that turn into cars like it's a genuine epic tale.

[up] Well, I thought Thor: Ragnarok was awesome, so I'm the opposite of worried! grin

Ah, yes, the movie where even when Asgard burns down to the ground, it's still played for a joke.

I look forward to not being able to have emotional reaction to anything that happens on the screen.

Honestly, if I was casting He-Man, I'd probably go with someone in the vein of say, Steve Reeves or one of those "Actor-Bodybuilder" types - someone able to go for an aesthetic like what Steve had during the course of say his early Hercules movies. There aren't that many nowadays because bodybuilding has shifted away - to its detriment - toward a look that just doesn't agree with filmography. And I say that as a bodybuilder. The sport - when it pivoted away from the look of Bob Paris - was damaged, in general and in terms of potential for people crossing over into film.

However there are some who I think fit a photogenic look. For example, let me say I think Maximilian Acevedo would make a very good He-Man.

He has the kind of mass a lot of young male actors lack these days, which is required to play He-Man. He wouldn't need to gain much more, and he has a filmography already established.

If by some miracle the movie is released, I hope Evil-Lyn isn't a case of "She's only evil because an evil man corrupted her."

According to Variety, the live action film has been officially passed on by Netflix. However, currently costing $30 million, Mattel is looking for a new buyer of the film.

Insiders said that close to $30 million has already been spent on development costs and the cash that’s been shelled out to hold on to talent – like previously announced lead Kyle Allen and the film’s heatseeking directing duo Adam and Aaron Nee (“The Lost City”). Other knowledgable sources estimate all-in costs for development at twice that figure.

A spokesperson for Mattel confirmed that “Masters of the Universe” is no longer at Netflix, but did not provide any further comment. A Netflix spokesperson had no comment.

However, sources close to “Masters of the Universe” said after that point the streamer refused to shell out more than $150 million to see up-and-comer Allen (“American Horror Story,” “A Haunting in Venice”) pick up He-Man’s sword. A source familiar with Netflix said the stock drop was irrelevant to budget issues on “Masters,” noting that its content spend has been flat at $17 billion for two years, despite market fluctuation.

According to Deadline`, Travis Knight is in negotiations to direct the film, which is currently being handled by Amazon Studios now. They cite his experience directing Bumblebee under a reasonable budget, along with being a director of two mediums (live action and animation), as noteworthy elements.

The long-in-development Masters of the Universe reimagining from Mattel looks to be gaining some momentum as sources tell Deadline that Travis Knight is in final negotiations to direct. Insiders say his deal has not closed and that other elements on the project are still coming together, but all signs are pointing to Knight being the top choice.

Chris Butler will rewrite the script from an initial draft written by David Callaham and Aaron & Adam Nee. Amazon MGM Studios in final negotiations for rights to the project, with Mattel’s Robbie Brenner and Escape Artists’ Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal producing.
