OK, here's where this thread is standing, with the unlocking:

Given the widespread backlash and complaining about certain aspects of the work (i.e. Dexit), we wanted to communicate very clearly what we are not willing to put up with: prolonged, circular complaining (or wonking).

Of course, with a controversial subject that has a large impact on the gameplay, Dexit is in one of those areas where there it may be on-topic to discuss it, but the nature of that discussion can wildly vary. As has been said elsewhere, we ix-nayed discussion of Dexit entirely because it never seemed to happen without devolving into that kind of complaining.

However, we're willing to unlock the thread after this 3-day cooldown period because the Pokemon General thread has been stable enough. And -

Can I discuss Dexit?

Yes. But if there is prolonged wonking on it, the thread just becomes an echo chamber of complaints and we do not like that. No one likes that. The same rules as ever apply. Be a constructive, healthy space. Have conversations about what you like, and what you don't like, but the thread should not get locked into a series of bitter complaints.

If you have questions or concerns about mod implementation or action, we have a thread for that here.

Alright? Thank you all for waiting this out. I hope we're all good now.

The presence of Charizard does suggest the Kanto starters, at least. I wouldn’t bet on the other starters, though.

The problem with the decision to cut the pokedex is that no matter if your favorite don't get cut now, it still can be in the future games if GF decided it not fit the region.

On the up side, maybe the loss of some of the old ones, means we can learn to appreciate the new Galar Pokemon? i mean Wooloo and Corviknight are a hit at least.

Or people will hate the new one since GF forced them to use them by remove the old one that they like. People don't like having their freedom to chose taken away.

I think what we’re going to find is that most people don’t care, or even notice. This really does affect a very small minority of players, and while that shouldn’t be ignored, it won’t make any appreciable difference to the game’s success.

It seems like a lot of people are upset at this, more than I've ever seen before about a Pokemon-related controversy.

"A very small minority of players" is nonetheless making one hell of a racket, and seems to include a sizable portion of the Japanese fanbase at least, considering their reaction. I think the last time we saw a reaction this strong to something in the fandom was with the whole debacle about the chinese language in SM.

Didn't work out that well for the Gen V mons for years, and the Gen V games still allowed you to bring in pokemon not in the Unova dex

Only a small number people relative to the predicted sales cared about Super Mario Maker not having Friend Online Coop. It got announced they reconsidered and will be adding it in anyway.

Companies actually care about their public image and reputation. If a stink, even by a relatively small section of the public audience is loud and persistent enough, they are willing to change their tunes.

If all their pre-release hype - which only a small number of hardcore fans care about - is going to be mired by constant reminders that Pokémon have been locked out of the game. That's antithetical to the hype theyre trying to cultivate. And it's not a good look for the company.

The trick is to be persistent with the disdain. "Vote with your wallet" is basically conceding defeat, a small handful of people not buying games is not gonna be too significant of an impact. However, Companies are willing to listen if a lot of prerelease hype is negative in nature.

[up][up][up]Yeah, I don't remember the exact details, but Nintendo or Gamefreak were planning on releasing SM without one of the Chinese languages (traditional, I think it was), which really pissed off the Chinese fanbase, and they raised so much noise about it that the company took that decision back and added the language in.

I think that was it. The SM YMMV page might have more details that I'm not remembering.

I think it's also key to note that Home is compatible with Go, and I think a lot of the Go players interested in SWSH are going to be upset that some of their Go Pokémon won't be in the game.

[up][up][up][up]As someone who's played the OG pokemon Games but technically started in Gen 3, i can sort of why that happened, but a lot of the best pokemon IMO have debuted there, most importantly Hydreigon, but i will aknowledge most of them come in late, like Bisharp and Volcarona. Besides, Galar still has popular mons available.

I find it slightly amusing, listening to the music from the direct, that it goes all "Here comes a better world", "Here you can do whatever you want, anything you want", and here we are, discussing the clearest barrier to that goal that the game could have.

Also, here's the music from the direct in case anybody was looking for it.

[up][up]I don't know anybody else, but I would be completely fine with the game being released later so it could have all the Pokémon. Not a lot of point rushing an incomplete game out just to meet a deadline, y'know?

I just hope there’s some kind of supplementary battle app that lets me battle people with any Rex / my older Pokémon, even if it’s an additional five bucks or something.

Potentially just... not being able to use those Pokémon anymore really stinks.

Or megapatch it in later.

We wouldn't get the old mons before Pokemon Prison releases anyway. Patch them in the game in waves if that's what it takes. We can wait a few extra months on that front if technical challenges really are causing issues. But until we get better interviews with more creative excuses, the best information we've got suggests this is a creative design decision.

You know, I gotta wonder if this decision to not program in all the Pokemon in future installments starting with SWSH and getting away with it was inspired by the success of LGPE.

That game had a restricted dex with some hubbub around it (though nowhere near on the scale of this) and sold like gangbusters, with a generally positive reception across the board even from people initially disappointed with that.

But the reason why people were willing to give LGPE the benefit of the doubt was that it was a smaller, casual spinoff aimed at easing new fans into the franchise proper and a remake of the first game so it kinda made sense. Plus people were saying that this was GF getting their bearings so the "true" Pokémon game would be more complete.

(Plus TPC promising that a "traditional" mainline game was coming made people assume "oh that'll be just like before. I won't have all my Mons initially, but once Home comes out I will!")

All in all I don't think Gamefreak or TPC was expecting this level of worldwide backlash when making the decision to lock out/not program certain Pokémon into the game. They probably thought they could get away with it like in LGPE.

Oops
