OK, here's where this thread is standing, with the unlocking:

Given the widespread backlash and complaining about certain aspects of the work (i.e. Dexit), we wanted to communicate very clearly what we are not willing to put up with: prolonged, circular complaining (or wonking).

Of course, with a controversial subject that has a large impact on the gameplay, Dexit is in one of those areas where there it may be on-topic to discuss it, but the nature of that discussion can wildly vary. As has been said elsewhere, we ix-nayed discussion of Dexit entirely because it never seemed to happen without devolving into that kind of complaining.

However, we're willing to unlock the thread after this 3-day cooldown period because the Pokemon General thread has been stable enough. And -

Can I discuss Dexit?

Yes. But if there is prolonged wonking on it, the thread just becomes an echo chamber of complaints and we do not like that. No one likes that. The same rules as ever apply. Be a constructive, healthy space. Have conversations about what you like, and what you don't like, but the thread should not get locked into a series of bitter complaints.

If you have questions or concerns about mod implementation or action, we have a thread for that here.

Alright? Thank you all for waiting this out. I hope we're all good now.

We still dont know what dynamax powet means. We dont (officially) know what that whole ingredients business entails from the e3 showcase. We know far fewer mons that what im used to. We know too little about the plot thus far since they teased that mysterious presence way back in June that caused the mascots to be on gaurd. And with the announcement of how Home ties to the games, we know next to nothing about that whole shebang.

Theres more to list but i felt these were the major ones.

They've never revealed actual plot details in prerelease. I'm not sure what you mean by ingredients by it sounds something related to Pokemon Amie, which will be back because they've shown snippets of it in trailers already where it looks as jank as it has always been, so I don't blame them for not drawing attention to a feature they never visually improve.

And I imagine we're getting even fewer new Pokemon than we recently have if both regional variants and Gigantamax forms are going to be taking up development time, so spacing out reveals will be necessary.

Yes, the pokedex is probably growing by less than 100. But even including g-forms and regional mons, it feels like we don't know as much as usual. Also I feel like they're embracing the disposable nature of generational gimmicks with gigantamax (they have little gameplay effect and the wide design variety suggests there's not much oversight on that end, which means they should be fast come up with), so I'm not sure how much effect they'll have on the rest of the game

So, is there any more to this game than "the one with Dexit, giant Pokémon and unintentional Danganronpa references that takes place in the UK"?

You mean other than the basics of a Pokémon game? Not much thus far. Giganta/Dynamax seems like someone recycled and combined the last two gimmicks, but otherwise, things seem very paint-by-numbers.

But then, Pokémon is not very much known for it's incredible innovations from title to title.

The game looks beautiful

The game is honestly very visually dull. Something about the lighting or textures is off.

When I say plot usually there is something more to go about. For example, we knew about U Bs, the island challenge, and the Aether Foundation, and from that we could peliece the plit together vaguely. I...cant see much of the story beats from team yell and the current champuon goal. There is something big missing. Something the leaks probably mentioned but hasnt been officially talked about to tie everything together.

The ingredients was something we see during the wild area demo, which is likely related to the rumored camping mechanic, which i also would like to see.

[up]x4 Previous games looks good/decent in the context of being on dedicated handhelds. SwSh doesn't look very good for being on a console.

It's a hybrid handheld/console thing. It would make sense to optimize games for either handheld or console mode. But even without taking that into consideration, this game is looking a lot prettier than any other Pokémon game. The designs are much more intricate and good-looking than what we had in SM/USUM. There's better stuff out there in the industry, yeah, but for Pokémon, this is looking really good.

I really wish we didn't have to have the "for Pokemon" caveat

Breath of the Wild is an incredible looking game period.

Mario Odyssey is one of the best games I played, period.

They can do better.

I say "for Pokémon" on the visual matter mostly as a means of comparison, because Pokémon tends to have a very distinct visual style, and that makes it hard to compare to the rest of the industry, especially in an age of realistic designs. That's not to say Pokémon looks all that bad, it's just not phenomenal either. Either way, this one looks really pretty thus far, even for industry standards.

Both those games I just listed are also very stylized and unrealistic, but they have better shading techniques (BOTW is not a technically impressive game at all, it just uses shading so cleverly you can't tell), better optimization (we can see an uneven frame rate even in this simple scene with a handful of NPCs wandering around), and overall better presentation than this.

By its contemporaries that are not older Pokemon games, this is not an impressive looking title.

No doubt. But that doesn't stop it from looking good. Just not as good.

Should be noticed this is Gamefreaks first try at a console pokemon game and they are not very familiar with the tech yet. I wasnt expecting to count the strands of hair on my trainer like in mario to begin with.

Actually on that note, considering the whole style of pokemon, what would be the best way to improve it? What makes it say, worse standing next to breath of the wild. The background? The characters?

Hashil Since: Aug, 2010

2nd. Let's Go had almost every important figure at Gamefreak working on it.

The shading and textures aren't very good, the animation is all very basic, the frame rate is really inconsistent, there's a lot of weird janky pathing issues NPCs have because they're bad at editing in-engine cutscenes to hide them, stuff like attack animations not properly being aligned with Pokemon, or the T-posing Wingull...

It's usually not any one thing, but a bunch of things that lead to an end result that's even less than the sum of its not-all-that-great parts. I guess the catch-all thing I can suggest to improve it is for them to take their time and polish all of this, and unfortunately they can't do that because they have merch to sell and 2020's game to work on, too.

For an idea of how important shading is, especially on an admittedly pretty weak system like the Switch, look at BOTW without its

With better shading alone this game can look miles better.

T-posing Wingull

I know this might not really help anything, but that is how Wingull is suppose to walk/run from the beginning. The thing is that some of the flying Pokémon are meant to look like they are gliding while moving with them only occasionally flapping their wings.

Of course Air Battles were a mistake in many ways, which include how some Pokémon are animated, but what I can do about it.

That would be fine if it was moving smoothly and banking through the air gradually the way actual birds glide, but its model pivots in place and moves left and right incredibly stiffly, using the same pathing as a ground based Pokemon, and it looks awful.

IDK how I feel about completely throwing out Mega Evolution and Z-moves, mainly because some Pokemon seem like they were designed with those mechanics in-mind, like how the starter pokemon had their own signature z-moves, or how Diancie had its own mega-evo which seemed like it was supposed to be its 'true' form. And now with Gigantimaxing, its the same thing. If they throw out these new g-max forms, what then?

Speaking of, I have a very strong hunch that the legendary pokemon will have their own Gigantimax forms, which only makes me more anxious about them throwing out the mechanic in future games
