The Faux Action Girl trope states: "Like the Standard Female Grab Area and Designated Girl Fight, this trope is often caused by writers who want women in their action show, but are unwilling (or not allowed) to show a woman being hit by a man."

...

I'm really unconvinced that's 'often' the reason for the Faux Action Girl. If writers were that bothered about men hitting women then they could have the Action Girl just not get hit during fights (she could defeat opponents whilst dodging every attack), and there are many entries on this trope of women being beaten/defeated/captured by male opponents.

The trope has two forms: one where the woman just doesn't get into fights, and one where the woman is constantly being beaten/captured by villains despite supposedly being able to defend herself. I think this trope has much more to do with lingering stereotypes like Men Act, Women Are (in cases where the woman stands on the sidelines), and reliance on the Damsel in Distress trope (you need a victim to create tension but it can't be any of the men) than it does Wouldn't Hit a Girl.

I find women fighting in live-action quite unconvincing compared to men. Not sure if this has any bearing on the existence of this trope.

So what's your issue, exactly? If you think that's not the only reason, then what do you have in mind?

Let me guess, expanding the description to match the examples?

Yes, maybe adding a sentence or two on how a reluctance to show women fighting/them always getting captured is influenced by Men Act, Women Are and Damsel in Distress rather than not wanting to show a villain hitting a woman.

I should also point out that the trope page says: "Villainesses are rarely Faux Action Girls, because we expect them to be threats" which also doesn't mesh with the idea that this trope is caused by Wouldn't Hit a Girl. A villainess remains competent despite fighting heroic characters- where the stigma of men hitting women is much stronger.
