Of the OP's suggestions, 1.2, specifically the last panel, seems the most on-point for the trope. However, I don't think it will resize well without a significant crop. The other two might be sufficient, and of those I prefer 1.3.
1.3 in wikisize
I think I can go with that.
(Annoyed grunt)"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."
1.3 / 3 is good, but I actually prefer 1.1, since it's not cluttered with company logos and text.
These crops of 1.2 look fine to me, as well:
Given than 1.1 is clearly a reference to 1.3, I prefer 1.3.
I don't see why that matters.
I'm actually going to give the nod to 6.3; that turned out better than I thought it would. I'm also flipping to 6.1 on the covers.

Clock is set.
The West Coast Avengers pics are okay, but I actually prefer the Letterman pic since the "...with David Letterman" text points towards him being a talk show host. The others are more unclear if you don't know what Jimmy Kimmel looks like.
Yeah, I had no idea who he was supposed to be, to me he looks just like random dude in a suit. I much prefer the original Avengers cover, since it makes clear who Letterman is even if you don't know him.
I don't see how adding "with David Letterman" solves anything if you don't know who he is. Is that not exactly what JAFAAC means? Only difference is the "caption" is embedded in the image.
I prefer the last panel of 1.2, since it's clear that the host is talking to the viewers of a TV show.
If we could find a version of the first panel (or a similar image) without all the text bubbles and captions, that would probably work best, since it's clearly set up like a talk show, with the host on one side and the couch full of guests on the other side.

I was too lazy to type the whole thing, but the “Late Night with David Letterman” text makes it obvious that it’s a talk show. I mean, I guess you could argue that one might not know talk shows are titled that way, but that’s kinda red painty.
Tangential, but I personally consider text in the image to be stronger than whatever we choose as the caption.
The clock's way up on this one. I'm going to make a mod call and put the Avengers/Letterman pic up just for the familiarity of both parties, but I'm also going to tag this thread to revisit when crowners become operational again so we can try to actually decide on something. Locking up.
Reopened for discussion; now we have a crowner so we can actually decide on something.
Pre-weekend votes bump; right now 1.3 is the only option with a positive ratio.
The crowner's affirmed keeping the Letterman pic on the page. Caption?
No caption discussion for a coupla days; locking up.
