That is exactly my point. Ozpin cannot be sure that he can trust these women, so, if his plan was to bring the Gods back, letting them control whether or not that is possible doesn't make any sense.

Sure it does to get them he needs people to be able to work together. If he can't get to them then it is definitely not a good time to summon the gods. He would essentially have a small sample of his chances with each set of maidens.

He probably also did it to ensure that he has to work with people rather than keeping all the power to himself.

[up][up] The point is that he might not have been able to do that because of how the magic he used to do that worked or something. I think we can be fairly sure he'd have done that if it was an option.

I'm not sure which I'm more looking forward to on Saturday, the next episode, or the world-at-large's reaction to the most recent episode. Certainly I don't think I've ever seen this much talk this soon about an episode, even when the wait was three days rather than seven - I have to wonder what's being made of the crumbs lying around the Internet. Already on the other thread, someone's dropped Ozma's real name.

Also, I heard somewhere it was stated in an early interview that Remnant's religion wouldn't factor into the plot. If that's true, they took a hard turn somewhere. Has anyone else heard that? Does anyone have a source if so?

My posts make considerably more sense read in the voice of John Ratzenberger.

Considering the show flat out begins with a reference to His Dark Materials and the amount of JRPG tropes, I'm not sure why people weren't expecting this sort of turn towards an increasingly cosmic plot.

Technically, it's not religion. That would imply worship and belief in the gods. But by the time in-show, the gods are thought to be fairy tales, obscure ones at that, and aren't believed to exist.

So is anyone preparing draft revisions for the show for tomorrow? I'm currently working on Salem and Ozpin's character sheets, is there anywhere I can put up a sandbox for people interested in proofreading?

How should we handle spoiler tags on Ozpin and Salem's sheets btw? There's going to be a fuckton of them considering how much this changes.

Edit: I worked my way through Salem. That took a long ass time.

Should probably be sure to avoid All White Entries where possible. My own philosophy is to try and keep the real specific stuff spoilered but not worry as much about the general stuff. Though, admittedly, that sometimes causes a bit of Swiss cheese.

A short episode, but not bad; our heroes have their immediate reactions to the revelations (being angry at Ozpin, enough to punch Ozcar full on in the jaw for Qrow) and make their way to shelter from the blizzard.

Then we have the villains share of this episode. Hazel tries to take the blame for the failure in Haven, and Salem chokes him out with magic for lying to her, demanding that Emerald tell the truth, since of course she already knows from Watts and Lionheart who was really to blame. She also casually reveals to everyone's shock that she knows Cinder is still alive, and that she is to be left to "toil in her isolation until she redeems herself", and lets Hazel go before doing her trailer speech. Then Hazel tells her that Ozpin's back already, the room's windows start cracking, Salem tells them to leave, which they do just in time to be clear of a massive storm of glass from her shattering all the windows in the room with her power.

Based on that reaction, and an odd moment where Salem turns away from her followers to hide a rather crestfallen expression, I'm thinking that Ozpin's not the only one starting to realize that their quest is completely impossible.

Not as heavy as the last 2 episodes but a breather was definitely needed. Though I will say this shows that our crew still has a bit of growing up to do mentally.

Also I'm staying the hell away from the other thread for a while. If this past week was a microcosm of the general reaction that thread is gonna be a real powder keg.

[up] Not really? They've just found out that they're living in a sort of Cosmic Horror Story with humanity caught in the middle of an unwinnable Forever War between two immortals. They're undoubtedly feeling a fair bit of existential dread at this point.

Edit: I like how they built off of the rather tragic characterization of Salem we got last week while at the same time making her seem menacing and dangerous after doing next to nothing for a good 2 seasons.

[up] Probably next episode.

Incidentally, I think I'm starting to realize why Ozpin was so passive about Salem's plan to destroy Beacon in volumes 1-3. He's realized that he can't beat her, and also that, because of whatever he's hiding up his sleeve involving the relic of choice, Salem can't beat him either. They're doomed to a perpetual stalemate.

I can see Salem getting the relic of knowledge, asking how she can get the relic of choice because clearly something's odd about that one, and Jinn telling her "you can't."

Ok, finally see the episode and going to post it here:

I dont see the gnostic theme, if anything is pretty pagan in a way: Salem sin was to take more that she could for the god, usually with gods there is sense of what I call natural equilibrium that is not human one: Nature should be respect, all things must die(remenber the song?, funny, isnt?), balnce must continue yadda yadda.

In fact the death of humanity kinda remind me of it: humanity grew wicked or evil and the god punish them, give Salem and arc and suddenly she is noe, utapham, the greek and many others, the gods are gods and they are not concern with human emotions, neither with please them as after all, give them choice.

I dont call him evil in the sense they are dicks but more....callous, REALLY callous, I mean for all the foreshowing, the whole moon stuff was the most hilariously thing ever: it just got broken when god of darkness clash with it....just like that.

The same be said of the gods arguing: darkness just revive Ozma and light kill him again just like that kinda like a silbings which show how flawed they are(and in a way, Salem and Ozpin reflect that).

Anyway, I will want to ask something: how this episode afect the world of the show in general? after all, it answer some stuff: armies cant stop salem because the end point is humanity united, not cowared, salem dosent want humanity united again because Ozpin can bring the order again, also this finally take me that sacrifice is Raven song about Ozpin, back when raven was suposed to show in V1-3.

...so it does end there. Huh. I guess nothing after that is counted in "what's Ozpin keeping from us."

Boy, Maria is really playing up the "innocent old lady" angle. Almost makes you think it might not be true.

It suddenly occurs to me, why don't scrolls have maps? They must have some sort of positioning system to send and receive calls, and to summon the lockers...

There are no satellites in Remnant to enable a proper GPS system, all functions we have seen of the scrolls are reliant of proximity to either the target or a CCT tower to work. Factor in that most of the world would be unmapped due to the inherent danger involved in being in Grimm territory and any sort of traditional map is going to be worthless when you get too far off a beaten track.

@unknowing: My impression is that "sacrifice" is directed at both Salem and Ozpin. You shouldn't be in the first thread if you don't want to hear spoilers for the new episode, but in addition to getting our heroes freaking out about the Awful Truth, we also cut to the villains, and strangely enough (and I actually quite liked this), they don't feel like they're winning or in control either, not even Salem, who at times seems to be facing away from her followers so they don't catch her looking all crestfallen, and has a complete meltdown after hearing that Ozpin is back and already and bringing the relic of knowledge to Atlas, ordering her followers out of the room to avoid the massive storm of glass from her breaking every single window in the room with her powers.

My takeaway was that Ozpin isn't the only one suffering existential angst from being in a Forever War with his immortal ex-spouse that there is no conceivable way to win.

I honestly feel even more bad for Ozpin. Also fully get more and more why he wouldn't trust anybody. Hell, Qrow immediately turned on him too, with everybody not seeing any value in all he's doing since he has no practical end game. I agree that SHOULD be a concern, but man, compared to all the things they could've taken away from that, I feel sad that that's the Dark Secret and it doesn't even seem anybody sympathizes with the fact he's as much a victim in this as many others.

Yeah... Episode 2 made me think 'aw yeah Ozpin is legit proper shady about time' but he's so ridiculously blameless in this flashback that it doesn't gel well for me

Shaoken Since: Jan, 2001

I think the issue at play is that from everyone's perspective Ozpin got them into a fight he knew full well none of them could win and kept that secret from them. He signed them up for a suicide mission and a lost cause without letting them know about it. So the feeling of betrayal is understandable.

What did they expect after they signed up to fight Grimm for the rest of their lives? Everything about being a Huntsman / Huntress so far has appeared rather suicidal considering they're fighting against an endless horde of soulless creatures that have existed for as long as humanity.

Really, their situation hasn't changed much.
