Couldn't find it being asked before: In the case that a character has an individual character sheet, that is exclusively about them, are there any rules about linking to that sheet in an example on a trope page, e.g. when a trope applies to a character through an entire franchise?

Same question. Are links to Characters\XXX pages allowed in examples on Main\XXX trope pages, or is such practice discouraged?

Hmm. This is one of those edge cases where we don't have a set rule, but must rely on common sense.

Most Characters articles are subpages of a work article, providing a place to split out and organize characterization tropes. Our general rule is that, when linking to a work article, we always link to the primary page, not any subpages. Now, within a work article, if you mention a character in an example, you almost never see that linked to the Characters subpage on which that character resides. So I wouldn't do that even if there's a dedicated subpage for that one specific character — something I would find highly dubious anyway.

Now, we have been building what one might call meta-Characters articles, when a particular character is present across so many works and franchises that we've decided to collect information about them in a single place. Example: Batman (The Character). Whether you link to it or not would depend on this question:

  • Does the example reference the character in a specific work? Example: "In The Dark Knight Rises, Batman does something." Here, you would not wick Batman, because you're already wicking to the relevant work article.
  • Does the example reference the character in a general sense? Here's where we run afoul of the rule against general examples; it would seem incorrect to write an example that is about Batman as a whole, rather than about a specific work that he's in. If you're talking about the franchise, you would link to Franchise.Batman, not Batman (The Character).
    • Example: Batman could have an entire section of Stealth Hi/Bye written about him, but each example should reference a specific work in which this trope is used. I suppose you could use Batman (The Character) in the first-level bullet of the section, as a list introduction, but I'm not sure that you'd gain anything over using Franchise.Batman.
  • On work articles within the DC universe, where Batman is mentioned in examples, again, it would seem pointless to wick to that character page. It's patently obvious who's being discussed, after all. It's not like there's a risk that someone will think you're talking about the Disney version of Batman.

I'm not sure that this leaves any cases where linking to the character meta-article on the wiki proper is relevant. Can you suggest some?
