[up][up] IIRC someone posted Mihoyo's financial track record and it's said that the income from HI 3 has been declining

The older the game gets, the fiercer the competition gets, I guess

[up][up]Hmm... checking Panime's 2019 Anime Gacha Mobile game ranking lists, it seems like we're both right. It's still one of the top earning Anime Gacha games, but their revenue is down from the previous year in places like Mainland China and South Korea (Two of their biggest markets).

I guess that's why they focused on things that would bring in more players from English-speaking markets, like translating the side materials to English, having the non-China servers behind by only half a version, and having the PC port up and running.

I must say, though, I haven't seen any action mobile game that has a graphic as smooth as HI 3's.

Then there's the simplistic controls. I think this one's a hit or miss; look at other games that have more commands and thus allowing the characters to do more things, but the other side of the argument is that simpler controls allow for easier entry for newbies and to focus more on the advanced mechanics instead of being stuck on trying to learn the basic controls.

I probably can't say much on the other factors such as character appeal and gacha prizes and stinginess (rather important contentions for gacha games).

...Tamanin Asagi HI 3 styled game......

...Man, now thats what I call inaccurate to her home visual novels competence. On the other hand, it seems other Hentai artists other Kagami Hirotaka are doing art for certain characters, the secretary seems to be done by Shindo L....

On the other hand, Punishing Grey Raven looks cool, it actually honestly looks better graphically then Honkai Impact Third, really.

So I have a few hours of gameplay now − I completed the first chapter and most of the second one in story mode, as well as the "Sakura and Kallen" side quest.

The first few hours were a bit tiring because they consisted mostly of bite-sized gameplay segments followed by 15 minutes of Ai-chan explaining stuff to me and/or me upgrading my equipment. Once I got past the big tutorial phase though, I started having a lot of fun with combos, QTE and switch-attacks. My main gripe is that so far the game is just too easy to really encourage a strategic use of the combat system. I just do random, cool-looking stuff with only a vague consideration for that rock-paper-scissor thing. Hopefully that will change in time.

My other gripe is with the translation… I don't know how it is in English, but the French subs, while intelligible, still look like mediocre fansub at best; I suspect the translators weren't even French. And it's a good thing that I understand Japanese because the cutscenes in the Samsara segments aren't subtitled at all.

Speaking of which, I kinda like how the game teases you with brief gameplay sections of broken characters like Theresa or Sakura once in a while. tongue On the other hand, there's that weird Gameplay and Story Segregation where you can use characters that are supposed to be incapacitated, where you can use Bronya against herself, or where Kiana (which I picked as first choice in the side quest) doesn't find it weird that the wounded girl Sakura found looks like her and has the same surname. It's not really an issue, just… funny.

Anyway, for now I think I'll mostly stick to the main story before getting to the apparently shitton of bonus stuff.

Sounds about right. If I remember correctly, I didn't have any trouble with the Story stages until around Chapter 5.

Haven't tried the PC Client yet, but it seems like this is a common enough problem to appear in the PC Technical FAQ

Try the method listed under "Cinematics Missing Subtitles" if it works: https://www.reddit.com/r/houkai3rd/comments/elrzdj/pc_client_technical_faq/

By the way, for those who aren't aware, miHoYo has just released the Chapter 14 Animated Short on their Youtube channels

Naturally, massive, MASSIVE spoilers for those who haven't finish Chapter 14 yet

Uuh, yeah, I'm aware since the game shoved it in my face when I logged in yesterday. evil grin But since I missed the entire context of the short, I can't say I was really "spoiled"…

And thanks for the subtitle tip, I'll take a look at it.

Otherwise, I was a bit shocked by the brief but massive difficulty spike in chapter 2-14 (the training fight against Bronya) >.> I had a character die for the first time… twas nice. tongue

[up][up] Shame that Kiana's battle suits use guns in game. Maybe they'll release a skin for Void Drifter which uses the Void Bat in place of her lance. tongue

[up] Oh yeah, Bronya was quite the nasty boss. Seeing nearly the entire battlefield suddenly turn red with targets was a nasty surprise when I first faced her evil grin

So I said that I'd finish the story first but I got sidetracked a little bit and did a bunch of daily and co-op missions, and I got to have a taste of Fu Hua, Seele and SSS Himeko − and good lord playing them feels good even if they're stupidly OP. evil grin Oh, and I finally unlocked normal Himeko. Not exactly the most combo-friendly character, but useful when I need to hit hard.

Also, speaking of red targets everywhere [up] , I started the "Empyrean Legend" (or whatever it's called in English). I don't know what I expected going in, but "chibi-Fu Hua shooting stuff and throwing bombs" was definitely not it. [lol] It's pretty fun, even if it reignited my undying love for ice levels. Reasonably hard too.

[up] Fu Hua has very rapidly become one of my favorite Valkyries, right up there with Rita; once you get the hang of her combos (which I still haven't completely done yet) and get her leveled up, she's a lot of fun to play. Seele is a beast in melee, even with a substandard scythe.

Empyrean Legends is recycling the gameplay from at least one prior event. I like the run-and-gun, it's a fun deviation.

What happened in Sakura Samsara in game and in the comic seems to be different. For starters, Theresa doesn't seem to be involved in the game's Sakura Samsara while she's central in the comic. Is there a way to reconcile this?

I only know of her, Rita and Theresa. Who's the 4th?

[up][up][up] Ouch, sorry to hear that. The Event pages usually either have a countdown timer or have the duration posted at the top. The News section also lists the dates for each events. I got into a habit of checking them since I had also been burned before by an event closing before I realized it.

[up][up] Yeah, Sakura Samsara is weird like that. The events in the game and manga are completely different, but various flavor texts in game reference both, so it seems the game treats both as equally canon. For example, the costume lore for Celestial Hymn is a summary of its appearance in the manga, while the costume lore for Flame Sakitama summarize the events in the final, final Sakura Samsara chapter in the game.

My personal headcanon is that the manga is the actual events for Sakura Samsara's cycles 1-3 (Since the game's version is basically a rehash of the still untranslated Sakura Arc manga except with Kiana giving it a happy ending), with the final Sakura Samsara chapter being the side effects of Teri's actions.

Buut... that would still have discrepancies on certain specific parts, such as how present Rin is alive in a way at the end of the manga chapter, but is still dead in the game.

[up] Cecilia?

In the game, it's Kiana who enters the "stigmata world" and assists Sakura and Kallen while Bronya watches from the outside.

In the comic, Theresa's mind self is the focus as the Stigma (and thus the world) is planted in her, with Mei entering her mind and Bronya and Kiana watching from the outside.

Then again, the game never says if Theresa is involved at all. Even if she hadn't been a playable character when Sakura Samsara was released, they could at least mention her.

The event of "Sakura planting her stig on Teri" is in the 2nd "book", right? I can only assume that Theresa is involved in the game thusly.

About Rin... Yeah that's weird too. I assume Sakura can make Rin alive again since they're all only in her mind, but still.

About the S-rank valk... come to think of it, if the wording refers to "every S-rank valk ever", then there are 5: Kallen, Reanna, Cecilia, Durandal, Rita. And probably Theresa. I dunno if I missed anyone.

Say, are there tricks or strategy to use Gunslinger!Kiana more effectively? Maybe it's because her level isn't high enough yet (lvl 33 right now) but I have a hard time making her useful in combat compared to Bayonetta!Kiana… Though that blackhole evade ability can help sometimes…

And good god, those SQ marathon levels where you constantly lose health are hard… but so damn fun. evil grin

Except the Parvati and its barrel roll attack. Fuck that one.

[up][up][up] Yup, the Sakura Rondo battlesuit came from that. So the Stigmata dimension they entered in the game should have still been the one Sakura implanted on Theresa's back

About Rin... Yeah that's weird too. I assume Sakura can make Rin alive again since they're all only in her mind, but still.

Well, Higokumaru's the one maintaining the dimension, but your point still stands.

Although, considering the recent revelations about said character's true identity in Chapter 12 of the game, maybe there's a reason she can't make Rin alive again depending on the rules of Reincarnation in this world wild mass guess

The latest chapter of Second Key has me on edge. Either Durandal has been put in a bubble universe of the Pioneer's choosing, or she's really reliving the memories of her Previous Era self, some time before the 3rd Impact of that era. Either way, the comic is a thoroughly enjoyable read so far, dual Stands and all—wait, that's illegal.

Base Gunslinger Kiana is mainly a Support meant to clump enemies together so other Valkyries could wipe several of them at once

The Core Augmented version, however, keeps the gather ability while adding a whole slew of abilities that arguably makes her the best physical mecha DPS for the game.

[up] Same here. The life Durandal is currently going through seems to mimic Kevin and Professor Mei's, with Rita as Kevin and Durandal as Mei. Rita is even shown as a basketball jock while Durandal is wearing a hairstyle similar to Mei's.
