He seems more like a Duerotagonist, the main character of his own story with the other reincarnates.
He is the deuteragonist in that he is the perspective that is most followed after Kumoko. He's also her opposite in a lot of ways. Privilege and struggle, morals vs pragmatism and so on. Honestly, I don't think he's a bad character at all, nor does he 'have it easy all the time' like fans sometimes suggest. There's nothing wrong with him from a moral or personality standpoint.
The issue is just that, well, he's just boring compared to Kumoko. Keeping it very vague, they happen to have conflicting ideas on some things, so fans side with the viewpoint character who is funny and sympathetic over a deliberately plain stock character regardless of the actual merits of each character's positions.
Its definitely easier to sympathize with a character who has a more distinctive personality and motivations even if they aren't morally correct as opposed to a plain and stock heroic character, so I understand.
It feels like the Batman vs. Superman debate.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does. It's the monkey episode! I'll be completely honest, the CG makes them look like absolute crap.

ooh ooh monkey episode
I need to go get caught up. I missed last week's episode.
Go away Shun I'm not here for you. Nobody is here for you. You only exist to be a foil to Kumoko.
The pacing here is really starting to bug me.
Oh wow they skipped the wasps. Unless the monkeys have a goddamn amazing showing I'm out.
Aaaaand dropped. Didn't even finish the monkey fight, it was that bad.

Maybe someone thought that the monsters in Attack on Titan being grotesque was okay, therefore let us make the monkeys worse.
(However it sort of works for me, so far).
I dont expect the finest of high quality cgi effects from japanimation studios to begin with, so i wasnt too bothered by it. I thought the fight was her first true showing agasint an actual horde of opponents, and she almost bit the dust more than once in this one bout, at one point almost getting torn in half! Lots of experience gained but she's out of the frying pan and into the fryer, as it seems she has encountered the lava portion of the dungeon.
A single monkey is horrific. As a troop the monkeys are actually just barely tolerable.
Not super important, but the anime skipped another horde battle (though not on the same scale) this episode in favour of the monkey battle. Kumoko was supposed to have tried fighting her way through the hornets to try to get back to the Upper Layer, but in the middle the dragon comes back and destroys her web so she's left with no choice but to venture into the Lower Layer rather than risk having to actually deal with the dragon by staying in that hole.

Yup. Unfortunately, the fast pacing of the anime really makes Kumoko's determination to keep going, and the weight of the various humiliations she's suffered, seem very substanceless.
It's been fun.I mean I never really liked the monkey fight. I've always felt like it made her feel stronger than she should be.
I would say that about a fight that's coming up soonish rather than this one. And that's one reason I don't like missing the wasps. You never get to see Kumoko that low again, really.
New episode is out!
Kumo finds her self in hot water (or whatever you'd call magma) but ends up training herself up to get a bunch of new skills, including ones she probably shouldn't level up if she wants to play the hero. She also finds her first actual good tasting meal in some Catfish, and is really hyped up, good for her!
Meanwhile in the human side...is it me or are most of Shun's companions besides Fei and the red hed kinda...creeps? the way that religous one started going on and on about killing naything taboo was enough to put even me on edge, and obviously yandere sister didnt do me favors either. Hopefully Shun gets better friends...
Please don't bully sensei she is a good girl.
Can't say anything about the rest of them.
Sensei gets no points for not actually being in the series since episode 1.
It's been fun.Details, details.
...Given that as far as I'm concerned, Shun hasn't been there either.
Shun has Katia and Dragon. So thats two not aweful people around him.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Yeah, "be on the lookout for anyone with this status tag so I can legally murder them" is a yikes. Already putting Shun in the "must lie to one friend to protect another" territory.
But don't you realize? Anyone who has gained Taboo is clearly a vicious monster who probably spits poison and massacres poor innocent animals like extremely ugly monkeys.
You joke but with the people I know who hate spiders theyd agree with that assessment just because of what she is.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession. To give them the benefit of doubt, If I walked passed someone who had a sign that read KIN EATER on their shirt, I'd probably be pretty sus of them too. Tho Fei and the MC are both Monsters, surely it wont carry the same weight? (dont ask...I already know the answer int he eyes of fundamentalist religious zealot...)
Dragons are a little more, uh, elegant than spiders. I'm assuming they wouldn't be treated the same.
Episode 7: Oh, Hugo... That was never going to work out for you, non-protagonist guy. And Sensei is waaay more powerful than expected, as well as having more info than either Shun or Kumo.
Knowing what Hugo got up to before this point in the webnovel, I feel exactly zero sympathy for him. Plus, there's the fact that he's already proven that he seems himself as the hero from a shitty light novel.
It's been fun.And of course he seems to have learned absolutely nothing from this experience and doesn't grok how merciful this outcome was. "Yes, making a deal with the Demon Lord to get revenge and gain power could not possibly have any downside."
From what I've gathered from this wiki and forum, Shun is kind of divisive for being well...a Stock Light-Novel Hero. Except, he's not actually the main character?
