I love this line:

Speaking of garbo Isekai and weird sex stuff, I just created a segway that could lead into almost literally any anime!

[up]Including the "Politics in Media" thread right now! We're having fun discussing modern isekais and their overall weirdness.

[up] Do they talk about how weirdly okay a lot of Isekai are with slavery? Coz that's a weirdly consistent trend.

Ask and ye shall receive.

    Quotes about Isekai wierdness
Yes, that is the real excuse given in the smartphone isekai in question. The MC is also magically OP, because the smartphone wasn't enough wish fulfillment. He also marries a 12 year old.

I'm remembering a write-up that was a MASSIVE FLAMING INDICTMENT of Shield Hero when it was running about how that series and others like it are horrific garbage since they exist for no other reason than to make money off of sad and desperate otaku by pandering to their absolute worst and most grotesque impulses and mindset in terms of racism, slavery, and misogynistic sexism. It was a good piece.

The same could be applied to Jobless and how it ponders to some of the grossest aspects of otaku culture and wish-fulfilment while dressing it up just well enough with decent writing bits and story to distract from those things while the fandom hails it as a classic and a masterclass regarding the lead as incredibly relatable and the world as being very realistic and deep in its frank depiction of sexual matters which are in no way there for titillation and fan service(yes I've seen people argue this).

Slavery is kind of a fetish for WN and LN audience, who become really furious if their fetishes are not catered too all of the time. This is the same thing with making their MC over the top OP to let them do whatever they want.

I've seen one manga that has a MC who's first major goal is to literally buy a slave, and he has sex with her within the first few days of meeting her, and actively tries to help the slave place that sold him her from collapsing. It's not even a situation where the slave is like "oi buddy, quick buy me from this before they shank my ass and I'll shag you" and they need to keep up appearances, it's quite literally a situation where a already submissive person was sold to keep their family from being fucked over by loans. There is also specifically discussion about slaves basically going "Yeah running NEVER works out for them, they either submit or murder-suicide since killing a master kills them as well cause magic." He also lets a guy be enslaved for stealing a magic item that belongs to him.

but based on what I've experienced back then when I still engage with isekai LN/WN fandom, most of them seem to read isekai to read about taboo stuff that are discouraged or even forbidden by "current" moral value and society. As someone I chatted with back then eloquently stated: "Why the protagonist still adhere to the morals of their previous world? They are at a new world with a completely different set of morals. They should go wild." And before you ask, yes, he wanted the protagonists to stop being a "pussy" and go be a "real man" and do all the standard isekai protagonist stuff. Heck, there are a lot of them who prefer Chinese stories because their protagonists is more "chad" than the "virgin" Japanese protagonists. Heck, someone even wrote a fucking essay on the importance of virginity for the heroines back then that basically amount to refuse sloppy seconds... So yeah... It's fucked up.

Heck, "I'm not comfortable with slavery but I'll still buy a slave girl because she's hot" is a step up for most isekai nowadays, which routinely have their main characters either aggressively neutral on slavery at best and defending slavery at worst, or even actively selling people into slavery themselves.

Now I kind of want to see an isekai character who acts like that, only to get killed in a slave rebellion.

Trying to depict the slave trade as both inhumane and a source of Fanservice is... Uh...

No, anime directors, you can't have both in this case. Or, at the very least you shouldn't, and you also shouldn't have to be told just how Sick and Wrong that is.

And you're right, slave trade as depicted in these types of stories is just baffling. I've seen glimpses of a manga called something like A Betrayed S-Rank Adventurer, I Make A Slave-Only Harem Guild With My Beloved Slaves, and every time I catch a glimpse of that goddamn cover, I want to throw up a little bit in my mouth. Not touching it with a 10-foot pole.

On a different note, I'm sorry for Geoff's kitty. Losing a pet is always painful, so I have sympathy for him feeling sad while recording this.

I’m telling you, with all the slavery-fetishization, it seems to me that what anime needs is a good old helping of proletarian revolution.

Man if they want slaves so much it be pretty karmic if they wind up enslaved themselves.

Really teach em that its not a fetish, its a horrible awful institution.

Spike and Faye aren't as deep as he keeps insisting they are.

I disagree, the those two weren't shallow characters in the original show by any means.

but to me this really feels like he's letting his fanboy override his critic.

Not at all, in fact his review is one of the most fair reviews on the live action show i've seen.

Just because his opinion on the show might differ from yours mean he was being blinded by nostalgia.

[up]×2

It would be nice to have an Isekai Protagonist that would do something about the slavery in the new world and not just accept it as the way things are.

#1565: Dec 8th 2021 at 9:51:21 PM

The main problem with isekai more than anything else is where they come from and the publisher's standards for picking them up and marketing them.

There's this big site that used to be a fanfiction hub, but eventually stopped allowing fanfiction and started focusing on original content (Shousetuka ni Narou, or "Let's Become Novelists"). However, the people who stuck around basically kept all the trashy and indulgent fanfiction trappings, and as some of these stories got picked up and turned into big successful light novels and anime, the publishers started picking up any series with a remotely decent following en masse disregarding any kind of editing or quality standards. There's basically no barrier of entry at all; the vast majority of these works are pretty amateur hour with little in the way of substance, compelling themes or complex characterization and focused almost entirely on indulging male otaku fantasies, either because the writers lack the skill to do anything better or because they're cynically pandering to their audience.

While this makes a certain amount of sense from a publishing standpoint ("who cares if it's "good" as long as it's making us money?"), it's not exactly conducive to telling good stories, either in terms of quality or having a decent moral fiber.

Well the ending of TPN is pretty bad and it quality has been in a decline after the 2nd arc in my opinion. Still suck that they didn't adapt the last good arc of the story.

Part of the problem, as Geoff said, even without the animation issues, Record of Ragnarok has a lot of good elements. It's real fault is assembling very poorly.
