I love this line:
Including the "Politics in Media" thread right now! We're having fun discussing modern isekais and their overall weirdness.
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.Do they talk about how weirdly okay a lot of Isekai are with slavery? Coz that's a weirdly consistent trend.
YEP!

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position. Now I kind of want to see an isekai character who acts like that, only to get killed in a slave rebellion.
Oh God! Natural light!…In what world would anyone with a pair of functioning eyes compare Tesla Note’s animation to Ex-Arm’s?
Welp
Anime was a mistake.
Trying to depict the slave trade as both inhumane and a source of Fanservice is... Uh...
No, anime directors, you can't have both in this case. Or, at the very least you shouldn't, and you also shouldn't have to be told just how Sick and Wrong that is.
And you're right, slave trade as depicted in these types of stories is just baffling. I've seen glimpses of a manga called something like A Betrayed S-Rank Adventurer, I Make A Slave-Only Harem Guild With My Beloved Slaves, and every time I catch a glimpse of that goddamn cover, I want to throw up a little bit in my mouth. Not touching it with a 10-foot pole.
On a different note, I'm sorry for Geoff's kitty. Losing a pet is always painful, so I have sympathy for him feeling sad while recording this.

My AO3 profile. Let sleeping cats lie and be cute and calming.I’m telling you, with all the slavery-fetishization, it seems to me that what anime needs is a good old helping of proletarian revolution.
Oh God! Natural light!Man if they want slaves so much it be pretty karmic if they wind up enslaved themselves.
Really teach em that its not a fetish, its a horrible awful institution.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I disagree, the those two weren't shallow characters in the original show by any means.
Not at all, in fact his review is one of the most fair reviews on the live action show i've seen.
Just because his opinion on the show might differ from yours mean he was being blinded by nostalgia.
×2
It would be nice to have an Isekai Protagonist that would do something about the slavery in the new world and not just accept it as the way things are.

The main problem with isekai more than anything else is where they come from and the publisher's standards for picking them up and marketing them.
There's this big site that used to be a fanfiction hub, but eventually stopped allowing fanfiction and started focusing on original content (Shousetuka ni Narou, or "Let's Become Novelists"). However, the people who stuck around basically kept all the trashy and indulgent fanfiction trappings, and as some of these stories got picked up and turned into big successful light novels and anime, the publishers started picking up any series with a remotely decent following en masse disregarding any kind of editing or quality standards. There's basically no barrier of entry at all; the vast majority of these works are pretty amateur hour with little in the way of substance, compelling themes or complex characterization and focused almost entirely on indulging male otaku fantasies, either because the writers lack the skill to do anything better or because they're cynically pandering to their audience.
While this makes a certain amount of sense from a publishing standpoint ("who cares if it's "good" as long as it's making us money?"), it's not exactly conducive to telling good stories, either in terms of quality or having a decent moral fiber.
Geoff has just released his Top 5 Worst Anime of 2021 video:
no prizes for guessing the #1 entry
Bumbleby is best ship. busy spending time on r/RWBY and r/anime. Unapologetic SocialistWell the ending of TPN is pretty bad and it quality has been in a decline after the 2nd arc in my opinion. Still suck that they didn't adapt the last good arc of the story.
E.T technically is a Isekai movieMan seeing Record of Ragnarok there hurts me deeply.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Even if the animation wasn't the best, Ragnarok isn't very engrossing to me either way.
EX-ARM makes RWBY look good, which is honestly impressive.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?I love the endless roasts that anime brings out.
You should check out the ex arm reviews on my anime news network.
The guy basically made them joke reviews as he knew this was this bad that he couldn't say anything else.

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Part of the problem, as Geoff said, even without the animation issues, Record of Ragnarok has a lot of good elements. It's real fault is assembling very poorly.
Geoff's ten(-ish) recommendations for anime this season.
Geoff just released his roast of Arifureta's first season:
Hottest Trash of the Winter.
