Well fortunately Star got defeated by Mabel, so the person who may or may not have committed genocide didn't make it to the finals. Poor Anne got kicked out by Mabel in just round two, whereas Luz won the whole thing.

Now she absolutely deserved that epic win, as she is the definition of a cinnamon roll who stays strong through hardship, but it's just interesting in the gulf in popularity between Luz and Anne.

Is it a recency thing?

Owl House wrapped up more recently than Amphibia

Doubt it. Outside of Luz herself only Star and Rapunzel are characters from newer properties that beat ones that were from older properties, and Star herself lost to Mabel who was from an older property.

In that specific matchup, it may be that Gravity Falls mostly stuck the landing and Star Vs very didn’t

Well as a counterpoint for that, literally every character who was from an older property than their opponent in round 1 was victorious with the lone exception of Rapunzel, and Tangled was more well known than Lilo and Stitch in the movies as far as I know... and the other exception was Luz beating Candice who was first seen over a decade before Luz was even in a pilot animation.

I don’t think Luz even found out her mom liked Sci-Fi until the Astral Oath speech in For the Future.

Then again, this comic isn’t canon.

Because he wanted to pull “I was brainwashed all along!” and returning to his old self would help selling the lie.

Exactly. It's literally just a Shapeshifter Guilt Trip since he knows Luz has a conscience and loathes murder.

But what was stopping him from looking like a normal human up until that point? specifically back in the human realm

Cause he was just fueled by the Titan. Before then he could barely maintain his Human Glamour even before his body was shattered by the Collector.

A little headcanon, BTW for me is Willow reminding a lovestruck Amity that Luz does have two moms and that Eda does count as such. Hence this bit at the Owl House:

Amity- You just relax Eda and I will fetch your Apple Blood.

Eda- Sure, why not? And don't even think about sneaking a sip of it.

Pretty sure we knew about Lilith originally being the principal from the first AMA, think the Amity stuff is new though and it seems like hijacking the Titan was always intended. Also an answer to what was going on with Gus.
