Sam just aimed his ray, and started to count.

"Okay, on three" He called "One, two, three"

He pulled the trigger, hoping for the best.

(Mitch nervously fires on three, hoping beyond anything that they'll bring Mikael back to normal.)

Outside Saint Academy

Lucien had rushed out just as Ebony had managed to stop Mikael's rapid growth spurt.

"Hey, well...look on the bright side. Villains won't be a match for you now."

As everyone else talked about focusing the rays and firing all at once, Lucien nodded.

"I know that at least my ray works properly. I made it just like how my aunt told me."

The ray floated a safe distance in front of him, taking aim at Mikael, Lucien gulping as Sam counted down.

"Three...two...one..."

As he pulled on the trigger with his mind, he felt an heavy pressure in his face around his forehead and nose, like the worst nasal congestion and headache combo in the world. A wave of nausea coursed through him, and it felt like the line between conscious and unconscious blurred. Fine manipulation and use of objects that he already held without simply moving parts in and out was the worst.

Outside

Now hopefully this'll work this time. Unless he collapses into a singularity. Then we'll have that to deal with on top of everything else... for god's sakes this is my first day! Were these guys' first days this mental, or is it just us?

As she pulled the trigger of her ray again, she noted Lucien's struggle. She hadn't seen such symptoms before, and cocked her head curiously even as she lent a psionic hand over to lessen the effort for him. Only a fraction, but it certainly would help a lot. If she wanted to help him out, she might as well start now.

“Hey. You said you weren't considered all that great with telekinesis. I can help you out a bit if you want after classes. I mean, I don't know how much help I'll be, but I'll try,” she admitted to him. Might as well vocalize it. She didn't want to involuntarily baby him, which she regretted to say had happened a few times before. Still, her doubts were genuine – she'd never really put in effort to her extrasensory abilities; it just sort of happened. But perhaps if he was missing a few things she could help identity them – both for herself and for him at the same time. Who knows? Exploring the minutia of their abilities might be interesting. Especially since it wouldn't be just her she'd be using them for.

Saint Academy

At first they didn't seem to do a thing, but after a moment, they finally started to take effect as Mikael slowly shrunk down.

And then Lucien sneezed.

As Lucien involuntarily slammed down on the trigger, the rate at which Mikael shrunk grew exponentially. He again started to glow which may have been the only thing that saved him from going microscopic, as the shrinking finally stopped. Which was the good news. The bad news was that he was roughly the size of a Hobbit. At least he was up for some pretty sweet movie deals.

(Mitch looks back after using his shrink ray and sees what they have done.)

...Wasn't he taller than that? (He asks upon seeing Mikael's new size. He inwardly hopes he didn't cause him to be too small.)

Sam could only blink at the scene in front of him. Because of a sneeze, Mikael ended up like a midget. And once again, Murphy's law attacks.

"Okay..." He said, thinking what he should say. "Better check if Reinbach has a growing ray lying around somewhere"

Sighing, he thought of what to do, and how to make sure it doesn't royally backfire on them.

Saint Academy, Outside

"Oh, for fuck's sake." Mikael growled, now smaller than his more human classmates. He stomped over to Lucien, wrenching the shrink ray out of his hand. "If these stupid rayguns won't work properly, I'll just fix them myself."

Calling upon the frustration and anger he felt, he pulled on his demonic power and forced it into the ray gun. Work, damn you. He thought, and the empath would feel rage rolling off of him in waves.

Restore me to normal size. Work. Work work work - Obey my power. - work!

Not even realizing how utterly terrifying his mental voice had sounded, how much he'd drawn on his father's heritage in that moment, he merely smiled as the raygun now glowed with energy, looking utterly pristine.

"There we go. This time it will work properly!" So saying, Mikael raised the ray gun to his own head and fired.

Outside Saint Academy

Mikael closed his eyes as he basked in the ray, soaking it in and reveling in its' glow. It actually felt strangely familiar, though he wasn't sure why. In any case, he wasn't that small. He had to have gotten bigger by now! He turned off the ray, opened his eyes, and... hadn't so much as grown a millimeter. So much for that.

Reinbach marched up to Mikael and swiped their gun. "Let me see that!" He opened it up and took a look inside. Everything seemed to match up with the instructions, though there seemed to be just a tinge of red throughout the gun's inner workings. The most curious thing was the quartz. Before it had been as white as the clouds and shining bright like a shooting star, but now it was as black as obsidian. Red lines ran through it like veins, and the wires connected to it were the same. He turned to Mikael, his eyes brimming with rage. "What. Did. You. Do?!"

Saint Academy, Outside

Nothing happened. Mikael stifled his brief impulse to set something on fire. Then the Doktor appeared to examine Mikael's altered ray gun.

Flapping his wings to bring himself to eye level with Reinbach, he glowered at the former Nazi. "I empowered it. I thought maybe it would work properly, but now it doesn't even do anything. So why don't you get out of my face and actually make a gun that works, so I can get back to being normal size, Faschist."

Sam decided to intervene before it got too badly.

"Okay, ease up" He said, getting between them "Right now, we have enough to deal with, so no creating more trouble, so better go for a growing ray and get that gun checked in the event that you made a rage gun or something else by mistake" He said, as evenly as possible.

(Mitch listens on quietly, not sure what to add and generally confused.)

Outside

"H-Hey! It worked just fine! I can't help that I sneezed!"

Lucien flinched from the sheer rage rolling off from Mikael, staggering back a bit. It pierced through his unaware emotional barriers, and he felt the anger he sensed bleeding into himself. Such pure unbridled emotion being showed off was enough, and he felt the connection solidify into being.

"Alright, you're asking for this..."

He closed his eyes, and he could see the pure dark-crimson silhouette of Mikael in his mind, connected to Lucien by a single, thin thread. The silhouette pulsed in violence and unrestrained fury.

Calm down. As meek as a lamb. Sleepy. Drowsy. Subdued.

All these feelings, states of mind, he sent flowing across from him to Mikael, hopefully straight into his mind. Waves of serenity and a feeling of peace tried to wash over Mikael.

In the physical world, Lucien stood there, eyebrows furrowed and eyes clenched shut, and yet doing his very best to look peaceful.

Outside Saint Academy

"Well," Mahvash put an arm around Lucien, having appeared next to the boy though she addressed Rienbach. "even if you didn't feel auras and even if Mikael's ability didn't come with an obvious glow, one could say he put his magic touch into the device." She shrugged her shoulders as if there were any doubt.

"I forgot you were of my Class 1 for a moment, Lucien." She smiled back at the boy she had. "Old habits. My apologies." Twas a complete non-sequitur yes. Except that she had abruptly decided on an embrace mid-motion after just not crushing Lucien's vertebrae when he started doing something to Mikael. Just enough for him to cool his heels heels while the nurse looked at him. That was a better ending than the Rachael incident.

Her smile was genuine, same as earlier. Though that didn't mean happiness. All the same, her emotions never changed, mid-attack or otherwise, still the thin layer of serenity and fascination over a very deep nothing.

"It was a mistake, yes." She went on, tightening her impromptu hug. "All the same don't add on to it. And just, take a little heat for the moment, because, yeah this is your fault. But we'll get it handled and you'll help make it right. Small harm no foul."

Outside

Ebony had to resist a facepalm and a groan after peering at the transmogrified crystal. She wasn't 100% sure what had happened, but she could make a pretty good guess based off of Mikael's demonic appearance that it had something to do with his powers or heritage. Had he seriously ended up making it completely redundant for his use in an effort to make it work?

Plus the sneeze. The sneeze. Dear god. She would go off on an inward tangent if she could even come up with one. But it was the cherry on top of the proverbial cake. She could almost imagine some sadistic extradimensional entity peering over them and giggling as they tore any and all rationality asunder.

“I am... half-inclined to put him on the rack at this point if it gets the job done...” she admitted in a seething tone, before drawing in a breath and rubbing her temples. “But in any case. Either we continue trying to fix this and hope to God fate doesn't screw us over for the eleventh time in a row, or we leave it for now and see if we can come up with something that won't convert his atomic structure into that of medium-rare steak the next time we shoot the thing.”

Sam tried to see what he could do as he tried to figure out what was going on.

Handing out his own ray gun to Reinbach, he made his own theories over what happened, but all that mattered.

But there was the exasperated new girl.

Eh, I am here already

Approaching Ebony, he tried to say something coherent.

"Hey" He greeted "Are you alright? Sorry about the rough introduction" He tried to chuckle, but winced at how awkward it was.

A slight dizzy spell came to him, but he managed to stay steady.

Don't fall. Not now

(Unsure of what else to do, Mitch simply sits down with his shrink ray in his lap and mulls over the situation in his mind a bit.)

Outside

"Medium rare filet Mikael," the daeva put a finger to her chin. "If it comes to that, enjoy his savory flavor and his memory."

"But we can put together a rack." Mahvash nodded with a smile. "There are plenty of demons ready and able to donate if we were to Frankenstein him up to full size. And the Abyss was full of quarry last I saw."

"Or..." She coyly presented Ebony one more shrink/grow device. "Mikael can tell us about how he built his ray and we either scale it down or put in a failsafe to limit it to brief bursts."

Saint Academy, Outside

Peace. That was Mikael's thought, but only for a moment as his locket reverberated with the emotions sent at him. He stumbled back from Reinbach, landing, and blinked. The crimson-red rage still pulsed somewhere within him, but it was weaker now, held back by stronger feelings of calmness and peace. Rubbing tiredness from his eyes, his other hand went to his locket and thumbed it.

"Agh." He exhaled, sharply. "Sorry, Dr. Reinbach. I didn't mean to get snippy with you, I just - it's been pretty rough these past few days, and going through another unwanted transformation pushed me to the edge a bit, you know? But I'm okay, I'm fine now. Won't happen again, I promise. Now, if you could take a look at one of the other shrink rays and reverse... this, I'd be very appreciative."

Outside the Academy

(Mitch is relieved that Mikael seems to have calmed down. Wait, "unwanted transformation"? Mitch feels a bit relieved that he's not the only one who deals with that...but then again, Mikael probably isn't permanently stuck with one like he himself is, right?)

Uh...I think mine still works okay if you want to try reversing it and making it grow him back to normal. (Mitch says, offering up his shrink ray.)

Outside Saint Academy

"Fine. But if we are going to do this, we are going to do it right." Reinbach swiped his ray from Ebony before opening it up and fiddling with it, making sure it was up to snuff. He then grabbed Mitch's ray and did the same. "Everyone, stand back! If you please." He then aimed both guns and fired for just a fraction of a second. And this time, it worked. Mikael was finally back at his proper size, and was no longer looking like a cross between a hobbit and Satan's hellspawn.

"There," said Reinbach. "Good as new! Though it is something of a pity. You would have made for a marvelous research subject. In any case, I believe that is enough craziness for one day. Class is dismissed." He then gathered up the rays and took off, leaving Class 1 to their own devices.

Outside Saint Academy

"Hurk!"

Lucien's telekinetic arms tried in vain to push the daeva off of him while he was calming Mikael down.

"I was just...calming him down...before he did something..." was all that he managed to choke out.

The calming had worked, and Lucien could finally focus all his efforts into pushing out of Matten's grip, gasping for air.

"I think...what you all need...is some time off to just relax and do normal stuff..."

He turned around to face his classmates, with a grin on his face once again.

"Like watching a movie! Or going somewhere to eat! It'll be a good chance for me and the other two new people to get to know you all better and you to know us too! My treat!"

Outside Academy

("Guess I offered too late..." Mitch thinks to himself as he puts his shrink ray away.)

(He gets a little worried when one of his other new classmates offers to take all of them, himself included, out to go to the movies or a restaurant. It's only his first day with his new classmates, and he's not sure he's ready to be going out with them already.)

(On the other hand, though, his mom and dad have always encouraged him to make friends at school, both before and after he accidentally gained his superpower. Maybe they won't be weirded out by or outright hate his superpower?)

(Mitch shrugs.) Well...uh...I don't really have any plans later, I guess I could go with you guys if you're up for doing something.

Outside

Though mildly irritated by his snatching of the ray from her grasp, Ebony let Reinbach do his thing, crossing her arms neutrally as she struggled to keep the expression of relief off her face as it managed to work this time.

“Yeah – do us a favour and keep that thing far away from us...” she muttered under her breath, before looking to Lucien at his suggestion and raising an eyebrow. At least someone had actually suggested it. Though she wouldn't be surprise if Genzleberg the Magnificent decided to bust in on some obscure vengeance mission right when they were letting their guards down.

Alright, enough of the cynicism, Ebony... it's still day one...

“I'm okay with that idea,” she shrugged. “Probably good to get to know each other better excluding the right names to shout when one of us is in mortal danger. That said...”

Without much of a prior warning, she was suddenly in front of Lucien, poking and prodding at his abdomen rather heavily. “You definitely okay? Your ribs aren't crushed, right? You were breathing rather heavy there.”

Lucy, having been caught between the urge to facepalm and to strangle something during the entire prior situation, finally gave into the former urge with an audible sigh. Looks like Matten's role as semi-inept class protector was being challenged.

Outside Saint Academy

"Mahvash," the daeva said to Ebony. "The right thing and name to say in that situation is..." She clasped her hands together shinning before continuing in a high pitched tone. "Oh Mahvash come deliver us. Or something like that."

"And the movies," she repeated Lucien's suggestion without much luster. She suddenly had time to go through Mikael's grow ray and that goo from the Abyss. The red boy himself did make a good test subject. She had so many motes etched down already.

"That's so... staring at a screen for two hours." She shook her head before smiling. "I wouldn't like the movie theatre, but I'll escort you yo one. And since you so generously offered to treat us to a meal, I shall drive us to a nice place in town. I'll even get the Nazis' old spacetime 'jammer' to help put your mind at ease, Ebony. Do you want me to hold your hand while we're out in town?"
