I know this is kind of a weird thing to be worried about (especially with fast travel), but can you move between chapter 2 and 3 areas in different regions without going back through chapter 1 areas? For example, could I go directly east from Stillsnow in the Frostlands to Noblecourt in the Flatlands, or would I have to go south to Flamesgrace, east to Atlasdam, and then northeast?

A video is now out showing (Major Ending spoilers) the Gate of Finis and they were not kidding when people said that it tied everything together.

Just to give an idea, (Even Bigger Ending spoilers) It shows the final thoughts of a man named Graham and reveals that not only did he save Alfyn's life when he was a kid, his journal is the same one that Tressa obtained and he eventually transformed into Redeye. That's just scratching the surface.

I'm totally making at least one of my male party members subclass in Dancer now.

[up][up] Octopath Traveler is actually a secret video game adaptation of Battle Tendency.

This is not the greatest signature in the world, no... this is just a tribute.

so ever since I got Alfyn I've been getting all up in everyone's business. It's fun!

Also, I've discovered the first Daughter of the Dark God quest, but I'm not quite sure how to resolve it with the party I have. I'm going to leave it be for a while and see if I can find someone or something that'll make this work.

That is one thing I really enjoy about this game. It gives you tools, and then it's up to you to figure out how to use them with minimal hint giving. Nearly all the side quests work that way. It really is quite special and it respects your intelligence in terms of figuring out its various systems. I'm enjoying it very much.

In terms of story weirdness, the only odd bit so far is Therion's first chapter. I have Ophilia of all people and she's OK with breaking and entering? tongue

I'm already having real trouble figuring out how to balance party EXP and things like that... I took Ophilia as my first character and I haven't regretted it given her pretty much 100% necessary role in the party, but the downside is that with her and Olberic propping up the two necessary party roles, I have very limited space to experiment with the others. Cyrus's magic and AOE feels way too powerful to give up for Tressa's money grab (though I really need the cash), for instance, or Therion's lockpicking.

What parties are you guys running with?

Edit: Also just met incredibly badass lesbian grandma in Clearbrook. That was a surprise.

I just did Tressa's second boss. I had her as the lead party member, with Ophilia as the main damage dealer and healer when necessary, Primrose as the buffer, and Therion as the debuffer. I tried doing it with H'aanit in place of Therion but neither the boss nor his flunkies were weak to bow, so her skills were kinda useless and I didn't have the proper animals to make up for it. I think in general you really should be flexible with team compositions depending on what boss you come across, it's really dependent on what the local weaknesses to take advantage of are.

Yeah, I really should. I really do miss Cyrus's AOE when he's not around, though... I'm slightly overleveled for the inner ring of zones right now, with Ophilia at 17 coming into Therion's area, but even so, being able to blow away five enemies at once with a two-point Blizzard feels so damn good.

Getting multiple enemies that are weak to Sword attacks and then blowing them away with one 'Summon Linde' attack is just...*chef's kiss*

I even learned Alfyn's all-out axe attack for the sake of breaking all axe-weak enemies.

Also I sometimes see red damage number on my characters. Is it because of enemy crits or is it because of armor types being weak to certain attack attributes?

As far as I know, red numbers are always because of crits.

Ahh I see. I thought it was weaknesses.

Also didn't know there is a trick to enemy weaknesses due to UI. Weaknesses are always in same order of equipment on the menu, then Fire->Ice->Lightning->Wind->Light->Dark.

Seems like the best group for traveling places with is probably Cyrus, Therion, and Tressa. Cyrus's Scholar's Eye and Analyze are great for building your database of enemy weaknesses, and he's no slouch in clearing power; Therion is the only one who can open purple chests; and Tressa helps you make money.

It's been fun.

Probably round it out with Ophelia or Alfyn for easy on-the-road healing.

Or whoever has the right weapon for the area you're in.

I have a message from another time...

Alfyn is my 'town guy'. Always worthwhile to get info that provides bonuses.

Then I get Therion to rob 'em blind. tongue

Is there a physical weapon that breaks skeletons? Or is it just magic? Surprisingly hard to deal with.

Staves work on some skeletons, at least the ones in the Untouched Sanctum. Makes sense, as it's the only blunt weapon in the bunch.

Edit: Man, I see what people mean when they call this an old-school RPG - mostly in the sense that it barely tells you anything.

Finished Tressa's, Primrose's and Alfyn's stories yesterday.

Tressa: A cute ending that wrapped her character arc up nicely, the Passing the Torch at the end was a nice touch.

Primrose:Her final villain was a bit disappointing but the way the final fight was framed is absolut kino. The slow melancholic music fitted the nihilistic conclusion of Prim's story to a T.

Alfyn:That fakeout though. Otherwise pretty meh.

Nothing concrete I'm afraid. I grinded levels the old fashioned way by finding areas with large mob packs that had a weakness in common that I could hit.

The forest from Hannit's Chapter 2 has all mobs weak to fire for the 20-30 range. The Plainsland has large packs of thoose frogmen that are weak to ice. For 40-45 I farmed the aerial mobs in the Tier 3 area of the Highland, as they are all weak to bows. For 50+ I farm the elemental mobs in the secret jobs shrines.

This isn't strictly reliable since they're rare spawns, but if you find a monster called a Cait kill it immediately with the spammiest attack you have - something with multiple hits if at all possible.

They're worth exponentially more experience than anything else around them and can appear just about anywhere as far as I'm aware.

#200: Jul 15th 2018 at 5:41:36 AM

Yeah, I've seen a few, but damn are they hard to hit. Even a single turn using Focus Aim is a waste.

Also, I've cleared the first ring of Chapters and have started grabbing the secondary job shrines. What would you guys recommend for subclasses? I'm keeping Ophilia and Therion in my team for heals and Pick Lock, but it feels like the point of subclasses is more to cover as much range as possible than to complement the main-sub very much.

Though I'm sure the preferred strategy is, once you know what an area is generally weak to, hoof it back to town and pack the team with as many classes that can carry that damage type as possible.

It's been fun.
