There seems to be characters that people are listing that are sympathetic, but due to some more unsavory traits, are deemed unsympathetic. What I've learned is that there is a difference between being unjustified and unsympathetic. For example from Persona 5:
This is unjustified, but not completely unsympathetic since he has a legit tragic backstory that drives him. It's not excusable, but it's sympathetic. This on the other hand from Metroid: Other M is unsympathetic:
While he does have something of a tragic backstory, it is glossed over and he clearly isn't suffering. Then there are the entries that are just plain complainy, like this from Neon Genesis Evangelion:
The entry admits that he's sympathetic but derides him anyway. Another thing that I've noticed is that a few entries like the ones listed above note the character to be a Base-Breaking Character. So obviously there would be parts of the fandom not finding them unsympathetic.
