Why bother giving any sort of attention to those abusers anyway? They are old news and irrelevant.

On Death Of The Author. Guest Starring John Green.

Sort of a follow up piece to the Parasocial Bond with Creators video.

Lindsay would probably be steamed at me, but I found someone who uploaded most of her Nostalgia Chick videos (uploaded as "Nostalgia Woman"), barring her Little Mermaid deconstruction video (and maybe a couple others).

I initially felt the reason why Lindsay regards these as old shames was simply because of their association with the TGWTG (later Channel Awesome), but looking at a couple (particularly the Beauty and the Beast Christmas review) there's several jokes that I think the Lindsay of today would surely berate herself, or anybody else if somebody made those types of jokes. The 'Beauty and the Beast' video alone has a joke about autistic people, molestation, and a freaking holocaust remark alone!

If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them.

Copy-pasting this from a comment I left on the video, but I think I have a slight issue with the way Lindsay frames what Death of the Author is.

I may well be wrong here, but I thought the central point of Barthes' "Death of the Author" was that any given narrative work will derive its meaning from the contextual symbols the work draws from? I think the point he was making was that this context exists regardless of whether the author intends it or not, because that context is drawn not only from the author, but from a number of cultural references that predate the author's writings.

It seems to me like applying "death of the author" to solely mean "the author intent doesn't matter" is a misrepresentation of the point Barthes was actually trying to make.

I get what John Green is saying about readers projecting the actual author onto a main character (or any character) they created. I've done that too, especially with Sue Grafton or Kathy Reichs.

Hell, while reading ''Misery", despite seeing the film first, it was easy for me to imagine Stephen King himself in the role of Paul Sheldon.

I'm trying so hard to get through this new video, but the sound keeps getting muffled and cut down for the sake of being 90's I guess? I have hearing issues, so this is annoying as hell having to turn it up in the throwback video tape parts only to have it come blasting in when it goes 'normal' again.

Projecting a character from a book onto the author happens a LOT, especially when that character has outspoken views about the world. There have been actual lawsuits over it, where the author had to explain to a judge that the views of his characters are not neccesarily his own.

Stephen King is an interesting counter-example, though, since he demonstrably and admittedly puts so much of himself into his books (though, again, not EVERYTHING in his books is about him). You can definitely tell the guy has a deep and intense hatred of bullies, for one.

Frankly, most of Lindsey's Nostalgia Chick videos are just not particularly good, especially not of you compare them to what she does now.

The VHS gimmick annoyed me at first but the end where it slowly removes the filter to be in line with the normal segments and combine both presentation formats as part of the final point I think was worth the muffled sound.

[up][up][up]I remember her Lord of The Rings videos being pretty good (or maybe that was after she left that character behind). Personally, I always found Nostalgia Chick videos more interesting then Nostalgia Critic. Less screaming and rage-ranting and more introspection and honesty.

But yeah, they've got nothing on her newer content.

I feel like her Lorax review as well as her reviews of Golden Age cartoons (Minnie the Moocher, Der Fuhrer's Face, Red Hot Riding Hood and Coal Black & de Sebben Dwarves) hold up really well.

But with the Golden Age Cartoon works it was very much more in line with the work she does now over her role as the NChick

Hell I find some of her old stuff like the Transformers film and the Baby Toys pretty informative in their own right.

For me I tend to see both views - like I form my opinion on a book, while at the same time curious as what the author wants to say. Like you end up with stuff like Machiavelli's The Prince where he wants it to be seen like some sort of satire or at least a guideline but people treat it straight-faced.

Also did JK Rowling say something lately? She wasn't the only one who mentioned her in my twitter feed lol
