Intense staring sensei was quite cute.

New chapter:

That 4koma. [lol]

That girl always causes trouble for Yugita.

This manga really is Nisekoi's Spiritual Successor

That doesn't make me want to start it. =[

Not so much, the genre is just absolutely cliche ridden. If you've read 3, you've read them all. The key is to focus on the individual performances, rather than the recurrent plot elements and archetypes.

[up][up]Well, okay, that's not quite fair. It's not like the Nisekoi as a whole. It's like... remember that patch of like 100 or so chapters where nothing really happened and we just cycled through chapters of each girl doing something with Raku? It's like that from the start.

I'll say this in this series favor tho- unlike Nisekoi it's not immediately obvious which girl is going to win. Like, everyone knew from chapter 1 that Chitoge is going to win, but here, it could go either way.

Yeah, right now I'd say that Rizu is the most likely, but Uruka has been getting just as much tease and development. It's a very tough call.

Uruka quenching her thirst with the sweat from Nariyuki's back. Hahaha.

The summer uniforms look good.

Weighing in on the Nisekoi comparisons: WNL honestly feels shallower, but at least it's more honest about being all about the harem hijinks.

Nisekoi became annoying because new girls kept being added when the race was already between the original two, not to mention the "serious" detours that ate up chapters but added nothing to the overall story.

Here on the other hand there is no designated winner yet, the protagonist in fact is not even aware of his love interests as such, so it has room for the usual harem antics without them becoming irritating.

As long as sporty girl wins in the end, of course.

Swimmer girl is the worst on though. Chem girl or Literature girl need to be the winners. Speaking of which, Literature girl needs more focus in general because so far Math girl and Swimmer girl take up most of the focus.

I mean, WNL is a lot worse about this. Not even four chapters with the original two, then a third one gets added. And now a possible fourth and fifth. Not that they're unwelcome, but it contributes to the fast-food vibe of this story. "Let's just throw cute girls at plots and make them do stuff."

[up] It does seem that Ogata and Uruka get most of the attention. I remember thinking that Furuhashi might get a two-parter after Ogata's, but that did not turn out to be the case. I wonder if if it's just harder to think up plots for Furuhashi, compared to Ogata and Uruka.

Of course, Nisekoi had its own forms of repetition: there were four chapters whose plot was "Tsugumi finds some contraption that the Beehive's R&D department left lying around after deeming it useless, and Hilarity Ensues."

In defense of this manga, I don't think new girls are added randomly or just for sake of enlarging harem.

With Nisekoi, you had the main two that were clearly the only two real candidates, plus a bunch of also rans that added little in the long run — even if any sensible man had chosen Tsugumi. Which wasn't that bad, but when you got all those detours and new girls still being added to the harem long after it made sense, it got annoying.

This series on the other hand starts with the protagonist not in love with anyone, nor actually looking for it, with only one girl unambigiously in love with him, the others maybe having some attraction to him. There's room to grow therefore and there's a story beyond will they or won't they, as that he has to teach them to study properly.

Excuse me, a sensible man would have chosen Yui Kanakura. Shame Raku was not a sensible man. (But yeah Tsugumi was solid [tup])

[up][up] I don't see how this is the case. And now that we're discussing it, it actually is interesting that they introduced the childhood friend character before the main heroines have even started developing feelings for the guy. Usually you'd introduce such a character at a point of high romantic tension to shake things up.

Both sensei and Sekijou have their position set by their relationship with girls not with Yuiga. Sekijou is here mainly to help her rival slash friend Ogata. Eventually she might go full wingwoman for her. And sensei is well... sensei. Even if they were mildly interested they are unlikely ever step out of their role.

Uruka is different story altogether, though. She is (one of) main heroine(s) with solid shot on victory. She still has also different role. She broke pattern set with two heroines and became very likely first friend and act as glue of group.

[up] The same way a lot of other harem series introduce minor female characters that don't like the main lead? And really, it's way too early to judge. The teacher, at least, seems prone to falling for Nariyuki's charms.

And Takemoto is hardly the glue of the group; their focus point is obviously Nariyuki. And Ogata and Fumino were already study buddies at the start of the story. Besides, adding a third main heroine still counts as expanding the harem just because.

The timing of Uruka's introduction is really weird. The fourth chapter is too late for her to be a part of the series premise, but way too early to "shake things up" . can't tell what they were thinking with that one.

My guess would be that early reception wasn't that good and that they decided to throw in a new character to liven things up…

[up][up][up]study budies =/= friends. Neither of girls are good with other people not even with each others.

Anyway Uruka us different from Sensei or Sekijou. She is one of main heroines and possible winner. You don't add black horse of race just to pad numbers. She is neither random nor just for sake of making harem bigger.

Whether other two mentioned are interested in Yuiga doesn't matter as their main role is elsewhere and are not to take part in harem hijinks often if ever.

[up] I am also free to interpret that them being study buddies also means they're friends, because we have been given no reason to think otherwise. And it still boils down to Nariyuki being the glue of the group, NOT Uruka.

I'm also still confused about your arbitrary rules as to what counts as harem padding or not. I mean, of course Uruka wasn't a random addition. She was deliberately added to the story to drum up excitement. That's kind of what harems do.

And when Sekijou and Sensei do fall for Nariyuki, then by your standards, would they count as padding the harem? Please do tell.

Anyway, volume 1 extras and the new chapter are out!

Not much to say about the extras, so I'll comment on the new chap. I guess the Furuhashi screentime is appreciated even if it's part of an Uruka chapter.

The Accidental Kiss thing has reached Uruka's ears, and oh boy. And wow, Furuhashi actually caught on to both Rizu and Uruka's crushes on Nariyuki. Very interesting, actually!

Fumino is the only one with half of a brain there.

Also, this is quickly becoming a mess.

Furuhashi quickly jumped up to the top spot for me because of this chapter. She's kind of like the wingman side character at this point, though.

This series takes some weird turns with it's characters, that's for sure.

That line perfectly encapsulates my dislike for childhood friend characters.
