So how's everyone's music been going?

I was hanging out in the practice rooms at my school yesterday with two other people from my choir section working on our part in Dvorak's "Te Deum." But then we got bored and started improvising. And then we ended up coming up with a spontaneous three-part harmony of New Americana, which we ended up polishing more than the Dvorak we were supposed to be practicing, so we've decided to debut it at an open mic next week. tongue

I have completed my first recorder composition album which is ready for sale on April 30. I could have released it earlier, but that date is significant because it is the same day as the 39th Music Media-mix Market.

After all, I started composing again after a 4 year long hiatus upon listening to the music I bought during the previous event and the album is a tribute to the musicians doing these music.

[up]Good luck on your performance!

I'm still trying to write more of my own songs and record demos. I recorded one demo that I overdubbed a really good guitar solo over, and I felt really proud of my playing for once. I hated the vocals though.

Recently, I started taking vocal lessons at the local Music Academy. I've learned a few basic vocal techniques (warm up before you sing, try to rely more on airflow than throat constriction, keep your mouth open and relaxed, etc.), and I've been trying to sing a few songs in there, namely Do It Again, Karn Evil 9 1st Imp. Part II, and Homeward Bound (the old folk song).

Still doesn't mean I like the sound of my own voice, though. :/

[up]Good luck! Despite public perception, most people are able to sing to some extent if they work at it. "I can't sing" is one of those sentiments like "I can't draw" or "I can't do math" while, where it is true that some people have more talent than others, most people could actually learn to do it if they tried it's just the defeatist attitude holding them back. I've been a vocal coach before and I very rarely meet people who just plain can't sing. Most people get better with practice.

I released a new EP titled Catch-22. It features various genres such as post-rock, ambient electronic, and experimental rock, and it also has influences from artists such as Brian Eno, Miles Davis, and Sigur Ros. It's free to download, but feel free to donate some money if you liked it by buying all 20:34 of it. Up to you, and you can pay whatever you want. Also, some critique on it would be helpful to improving my sound. Thanks!

I just randomly ended up with a small part in an opera. They needed a soprano to sing like five measures and I was hanging out in the theater and overheard them so I just raised my hand and said 'sup (verbatim) So I guess that's a thing now. Right place at the right time indeed

I started learning the euphonium. My sister's a euphonist and she's teaching me. I've been wanting to learn a new instrument, so after much deliberation I've gone with the one that someone in my house already owns. tongue

It totally sucks having to practice in an apartment though. I felt awkward practicing the piano and my singing with those thin walls, and the euphonium is so much louder.

I feel like more and more of my music is starting to take influence from my thoughts of depression, loneliness, fear, and paranoia.

How do you feel about that? Some people find that pouring their negative emotions into music is cathartic, others find that distressing and prefer to create happy or calm music to make themselves feel better.

I don't know what to think of it. Some of it feels cathartic and it works, but I've had to rewrite a lot of stuff for feeling too blunt and personal (and for just generally not being too well written).

Hey! So Adric De Psycho and I are starting a band and we would like to know if anyone here would be interested in drumming for us. We're hoping for someone with a microphone capable of picking up heavy drumming without too much distortion. The kind of music played would be a mix of folk rock, progressive rock, and noise pop.

Singing ability and songwriting skills are also welcome. This is less a "band" and more a "collective" we're putting together. If you can play, sing, write, or something, and you have a mic to record this with, you're in.

And seriously, we need somebody who can drum. Somebody who owns a kit, can play the kit, can record with the kit, something like that.

Drumming ability I don't have, unless you're fine with me swiping pots, bowls, pens, and glasses from my kitchen and utilizing them.

Singing ability (or lack thereof, you judge), I can give a sample of later when the paint in my room dries.

...also note to self, name a future music project "Paint in my Room".

I'm making some real progress on the euph. I can play a Bb major scale and arpeggio up to Sol and have it sound halfway decent, and I've added such songs to my repertoire as "Hot Cross Buns" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb"

TheAphid leers at strings.

I'm the Aphid. I've been told that my approach to composition is similar to that of Skrillex, that is to say, "throw a few loops together randomly and figure out how they fit together". Unless I have an overarching plan in mind, which is rare.

I play the piano fairly well and know my way around guitar strings, but I can't read piano sheet music. I just have a good ear for rhythm and tune. I use a DAW called Rytmik Ultimate, which is simple but high-quality for something that cost less than ten bucks. With my budget I really couldn't afford anything better.

I probably won't engage much with this thread until my music is up on Youtube and Soundcloud. That could happen anywhere between a day from now or half a year, depending on how soon I can get reliable lifey things (transport, income, etc). Specifically I need a USB microSD card reader, a music visualizer, and a trademark.

[up]Look forward to hearing some of your stuff.

I've got so much to practice. Rehearsals always get crazy this time of year. The opera's going to open soon, so we're trying to run it as often as possible. They put me in the ensemble too, so I've got all that to learn in addition to my solo piece. I've also got a very long solo in Dvořák's "Te Deum" to learn, as well as many other pieces where I'm in the choir. (so much Vaughan Williams. -shudders-) I think I might also have to accompany some recitals? But no one's given me any music yet so I'm not sure?

GA already pulled me into the Discord chat, but if anyone doesn't already know me, I'm JHM (among other handles) and I am mostly a producer type and vocalist who makes weird bedroom music which I have jokingly dubbed "bad dream pop."

I've made a Soundcloud account and uploaded a few of my songs here. I'll add more over the next while, whenever I get stuff finished. Tell me what you think! Hope you like the songs.

I'm a bit nervous about the cover art for them, though. I want original work, but I'm not an artist, so I have to make do with generic images pulled from teh internets. Crossing my fingers that the lawmaking hordes don't come after me.

It's Hell Week (aka tech week) for the opera -Scare Chord- I have rehearsals from 4 to 11 PM every day this week (which is also, coincidentally, a week away from finals week) Our production is looking good, at least.

My choir performance is also coming up. We had our first rehearsal with the full orchestra this week. The stage configuration makes no sense to me at all. My section (the sopranos) is positioned 300 light years away from the altos, whom we have a lot of direct harmonies with and get a lot of our notes from. Their sound is coming from so far way that it still hasn't reached my ears yet. tongue So naturally we were all off tempo, and the conductor decided that giving cues was for chumps (though he certainly doesn't mind cuing in the violins every time they play a note) We have a different conductor than we've had in rehearsals, and this conductor also decided that conducting the tempo as marked is for chumps so guess what we're going faster! (It was truly Dvořák's vision to have his 20 minute mass played so fast that you can get through it in under ten. So efficient!) I also really don't know what the basses are doing, in general, but when does anyone ever?
