Zuxtron Berserk Button: misusing Nightmare Fuel from Node 03 (On A Trope Odyssey)

[up][up] These last two bullet points are pure complaining with no mention of the other side of the argument, so they should definitely be cut.

I stumbled across BrokenBase. Two Best Friends Play, which looks pretty bad. I'm not very familiar with these videos (I have watched a few, but I'm not part of their fan base), but the page has many examples that seem to have been added shortly after the controversy occurred, as well as a lot of one-sided complaining. Honestly, only the very last example on the page reads like it has the slightest chance of possibly being valid:

  • As much as the Best Friends tried to avoid it with a simple and eloquent explanation that their members have drifted apart, the fanbase has now broken into a number of groups blaming all manner of things and individuals for the split; this includes Leanna, Paige, and Liam alongside Matt and Pat themselves, the latter subject to all manner of pulling receipts over his attitude. The only one free from being blamed at all is Woolie, who has set forth on his own podcast and working with Pat on smaller projects, and receiving nothing but well-wishes from the fans for doing so.

From YMMV.Cinderella, does the last sentence of the Base-Breaking Character entry for Disney's Cindy really describe a different faction from the two described in the first sentence?

  • Cinderella has received criticism for acting subservient to her stepfamily, and depending on others to help her achieve her dreams, as well as praise for maintaining faith in the face of abuse, and taking more steps towards achieving her dreams than Snow White and Aurora did. She has become far more assertive and confident in the more recent sequels. Others argue that she's a compelling physical and mental abuse victim who has been so conditioned to accept horror from an early age that it takes the events of the film for her to grow and realize that she doesn't have to accept abuse and she needs to get out.

I'm not sure any of those really sound like "factions," just different takes on the character. It's not hard to imagine someone holding two or more of those views simultaneously.

That example comes off more as 'people disagree on whether the portrayal was good or bad, for reasons X, Y, and Z', which is PSOC, since that state of play exists for every work.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

I agree the RWBY Broken Base additions, especially that last bullet point, needs to be removed.

Two of the bullet points, Lettergate - the 35 page diatribe from a former animator and a supposed friend of Monty Oum accusing Rooster Teeth of "ruining Monty's vision" - and Vic Mignogna - Rooster Teeth firing him over Vic's allegations of sexual misconduct - has already been declared Flame Bait over there.

The other two, the Crunch - a revelation that animators were put through a terrible Crunch Time and were apparently not compensated for it - and the increase of FIRST subscription prices - which really has nothing to do with RWBY itself -happened within the past three months and are really just people complaining for the sake of complaining.

From YMMV.WITCH:

  • One between the comic fans and the cartoon fans. The comic purists dislike the show for making random changes and inserting more "boy/kid friendly" elements to the story like wacky comedy or obvious comic relief sidekicks (Blunk). Cartoon fans say the story is still well-developed and fixes a lot of the weird things present in the comics that the purists don't acknowledge. To this day, there's still no pleasing. There are some who like both versions for their own qualities, however.

I think that makes for a reasonably valid Broken Base entry even if it's a bit vague in places. But agreed that perhaps it fits better under They Changed It, Now It Sucks!.

This was added to Do You Love Your Momand Her Two Hit Multi Target Attacks.

One thing it seems more about the negative, but this was added during its animation run which hasn't finished yet.

Hi there. I'm having a bit of an issue with a Base-Breaking Character entry over on YMMV.Life Is Strange 2. The game was released in September 2018, and has episodic releases about 2-3 months apart. After the third episode was released in May, a BBC entry was added for the character Daniel, which specifically concerns his actions in Episode 3 (before then, there had been next to no controversy surrounding his character).

I removed the entry for being a knee-jerk reaction and cited the No Recent Examples, Please! page. In June it was re-added again by a different troper, and I deleted it with another citation to No Recent Examples (along with clarifying the commented-out entry regarding the matter that has been on the page the entire time). It has now been added a third time, again by a different troper, who states that enough time has passed. However, it hasn't; the game came out last year, but the controversy still only started up about 3-4 months ago.

As I've already removed the entry twice, I don't want to do so again, even if it's removing something that's blatantly against the rules. I'm not sure how to proceed otherwise, however, especially since it's been made clear by myself and by the page that the entry is against the rules. Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated.

Put a comment (%% in front, it also works on the forums so I had to put a around it to make this post display) about the no recent examples rule where Broken Base would go.

There's already this comment on the page:

%% Please do not add any Broken Base or Base-Breaking Characters entries until at least six months after the controversy starts. Remember that Broken Base is for prolonged conflicts and that any entries right now are kneejerk reactions.

that has been ignored multiple times. I'll add a link to No Recent Examples, Please! and move it down to B on the list, rather than at the top of the page. Is it alright then for me to delete the offending example for a third time and refer back here for reasoning?

Sure. A lot of people just scroll past the first one so putting it in the obvious place will keep them out. If they continue to ignore it because waiting is so hard then they're not responsible enough to edit.

It might also be worth mentioning this clean-up thread in the note. Also, in the Edit Reason, link to this thread and suggest that if anyone does want to discuss it, to come here first instead of adding the trope.

So, this entry under Ghost Rider seems a) more like fandom rivalry, and b) might be troping with an agenda. It's got red flags such as using "SJW pandering" unironically(?) and saying that people hate this character for being a man, which is probably not true. Just wanted to bring it up here and see what you guys think.

  • For modern readers, Robbie Reyes vs pretty much ALL of the modern "SJW pandering" heroes. Most consider Reyes to be the only good diversity themed hero Marvel has put out in the last five years and are actively bitter that Reyes was sidelined due to Secret Wars and Marvel pushing America Chavez, Mockingbird, Ms Marvel, and other female heroes. Meawhile the fans of the other female-centric characters hate Robbie Reyes, because he's male and popular with the older fans who the Alonso/Alto Marvel regime wanted to replace.

It's also not really true, Robbie Reyes is quite popular with the latter types especially since he's a Latino man whose culture plays a big role in his part.

It's gone. Additionally, upon looking into it, the original entry did not have the words "SJW pandering" in quotes, so it was absolutely troping with an agenda.

From YMMV.Batman White Knight

  • Once the title "White Knight" and the politics-heavy plot was revealed, the left-wing and right-wing sides of the internet went at it.

Doesnt say anything thats broken base.

[up][up] Plus, the wording "once [whatever] was revealed" suggests that the example was added as a knee-jerk reaction shortly after said reveal, disregarding the six-month wait rule. It doesn't explain how the conflict is a lasting one, which is one of the requirements of a Broken Base.

Any update on the Steven Universe Diamond redemption update? I see no opposition to Crossover Enthusiast's proposed edit.
