@Bleye: Watching KNK doesn't actually clarify anything. It's fundamentally incompatible with clearing anything up, and may be one of the only pieces of media that makes you more confused than when you started it.

I'm going to rewatch it in chronological order- I already finished it in release order which I think is gonna be the best way to watch it due to the nature of the show's achronological story-telling structure

That said there's more than one 2 hour movie in there, and i don't usually have two hours of straight open time at all

Didn't one of the movies go off rails from novels making things even more confusing? Wouldn't reading KNK be (relatively) more comprehensible?

But of course.

Bad translation is hard enough to understand when it's relatively simple concepts - even if the translator understands what the original text means, they can't express it properly in their produced translation. Add in something that's as complex as KNK to begin with, and you're basically getting a bad translation based off information that is wrong, sometimes drastically so.

I've read the Kn K Light Novels. It seemed solid enough for me. Sure you didn't came across a older version?

There are two translations floating around

1. cokesakto's on Empty Boundaries which is bad to the point where it might as well just be a fanfic retelling
2. The ones on baka-tsuki which are functionally competent for the most part

My most memorable experience with bad translation (Duwang/Viet Crys-tier translations notwithstanding) was spending about 8 years without making any sense out of Cursed Arm's Zabaniya, then trying to read the Japanese description and realizing the whole NP was actually extremely simple.

Honestly, I've plain given up on fan translations. Ever since Creator/Alicesoft works started being brought to the West, there's pretty much no reason why any other VN company wouldn't.

I guess that's why I've always ignored, and will keep ignoring, the rest of the Nasuverse: if they can't be arsed to localize their stuff, I won't be arsed to check it out.

I think (one of) the reasons the Tsukihime Remake is taking so damn long is simply because, whenever Nasu and Takeuchi sit down to re-read the story, they probably go "Christ, what the fuck we were thinking!?" every five minutes or so.

They were mere newcomers when Tsukihime was released, they've evolved as artists quite quite a bit over these 20 years, and striking the balance into improving the original script and while preserving what made people like the story in the first place is probably quite a bit more daunting than we realize.

Yeah, and back then it could still take two to three years to get a project done.

Emphasis on done: fan translations are almost universally very rough because, even if the translator has professional-level skills, they just the lack resources and, more importantly, time, that a professional would most likely take for granted.

And that's if the project is ever completed at all, there's far more fan translations that just stop halfway through than ones that never get done at all.

Let's just compare some TM titles, here: F/HA was released in 2005, the fan translation got done in 2014; Mahou Tsakai yadda yadda yadda was released in 2012, six years later and we can't read even read the whole prologue.

And that's not even getting into the sheer hassle that actually playing these things can be, it took me a whole afternoon just to set up the first Muv-Luv, and it only gets worse the older the game is.

I just don't see the point in going after fan translated stuff when theres plenty of officially licensed titles I can just buy as conveniently as any game on GOG.

And frankly, Type-MOON isn't just some doujin circle barely scrapping by: it's one of, if not the most well-known VN developer in the world. Not letting their international fans having easy acess to their stuff at this point I just take as a personal insult.

And no, I'm not angry...at you, I'm angry at Type-MOON, and any agressiveness is directed at them, not you.

Part of me believes that one of the reasons VN companies don’t want to localize their stuff is because they would have to deal with the myriad of Values Dissonance that often crops up in the stories.

@Muffin: Sounds good to me. Honestly, translation takes ages. Especially for VNs, because visual novel writers don't hire editors and put every single idea they have into things.

I actually was working on a translation for Aiyoku no Eustia (an 18+ visual novel by August, so be careful if you go looking it up) before I was hired at my current company. Working on and off for about two years got me to the end of book 2 out of, I believe, 6; that was 120k words in English, or two modestly sized novels of writing, and the books only got longer from there, AND there were side epilogues and side stories. I never finished it, obviously.

If you're not getting paid to do it, visual novel translation is absolutely the realm of students, since they have free time and a stable environment to work within.

Turns out that even 5* EXP doesn't make drawing the FP gacha worth it. I spent something like 22k FP and got two 5* cards, which is time I could have spent running card dailies.
