We're incredibly excited to announce Pyre, a new party-based role-playing game we're making here at Supergiant.

In Pyre, you lead a band of exiles through an ancient competition spread across a vast, mystical purgatory.

Pyre once again showcases our team's commitment to rich atmospheric presentation and storytelling, along with a distinctive gameplay blend that combines expressive decision-making on the world map with fast, action-packed confrontations against rival groups of exiles whose own freedom is at stake. We want to create a large cast of characters you can grow close to as you travel together across a strange and wondrous land.

At the beginning of the game, your luck has almost run out when several masked wanderers find you and revive you from the brink. With your help, they seek to learn the truth about the Rites, a secretive competition through which the worthiest exiles can return home, absolved of their transgressions. As you journey across the Downside in the wanderers' custom blackwagon, you'll meet a variety of characters of all shapes and sizes, and learn what's in store for each of them should they prevail in the Rites. Your actions will determine who returns to glory, and who remains in exile to the end of their days.

Pyre will be available in 2017. Like Transistor, it will launch simultaneously on Steam and the PlayStation 4.

After Transistor and Bastion, Supergiant = insta-buy.....i know that's a dangerous thought process but they haven't made a bad game yet in my eyes.

I skipped Transistor. :)

So Mr. Narrator will likely be another character again and unrelated to the previous two roles he played.

Likely the man in the trailer Hedwyn. he's the on on the left in this group shot. though he could be the dog with a mustache on the right. The horned person in the middle, Jodariel, is a woman so he can't be doing her voice.

SG tweet regarding how i know who they are.

Giant Bomb talked a bit about it in this podcast (1h38m).

From what i can gather there'll be more characters but based on certain things only 3 of them will be returned from exile. What those things are isn't known (like ifit's just the ones that partake in the "final battle or what). and there'll be stuff that happens during the journey that allows you to increase stats....

and by you I mean You....you're kind of their Coach/captain in a sense because at the start of the story you were about to die from being exiled until these guys found you. They let you tag along because you can read a certain book and thus can help these characters perform the Rites that were spoken of in the trailer. So there's a bit of Nonentity General here.

I also found this video that has some interesting ideas:

I really love Jodariel's design. I'm confidant the game will live up to expectations, but she really caught my eye; hope the character follows through on the design.

Anway, we seem to have a fairly standard Fighter, Mage, Thief dynamic in play. Judging from what they said, it seems the core band of exiles will not be the only ones you can control, but I have a feeling that new playable characters will be a bit of a trial, given that you have to "choose who returns and who doesn't".

So is this just sort of a sports game with a somewhat-epic storyline?

Zak McClendon: Congrats! I just discovered if you describe it as "Oregon Trail meets NBA Jam" to people, everyone gets super excited.

[up][up]Yes as far as we knowNinja'd......though SG classify it as a party-RPG, it's currently unknown what that means.....though the rpg stuff could be referring to gameplay outside the sports segments.

I don't know what subgenre games like Oregon Trail and Banner Saga are in, but I was getting that vibe.

Mustache Dog has a name: Rukey Greentail.

So we now know the names for all the known characters:

Young man: Hedwyn, Horned Woman: Jodariel, Canine: Rukey.

EDIT:So taking a look at the speculation video again i paused it when he was showing the book so i got a clear view of the foreword:

FOREWORD

A Formal Welcome Undersigned by the Eight Scribes

You, dear Reader, are an exile from Downside, such as we, the eight who wrote this Book of Rites. That you possess it, and have the capacity to glean its words, is testament enough to your potential.

Thus we reveal a path from this forsaken place, to freedom! A homecoming in glory.

The stars themselves shall be your guide. Ere the turning of the year's first solstice, seek the nearest Longitude beneath the brightest of eight as they align as shown.

Arrive as a Triumvirate, clad in the raiments of the Rites, bearing this book.

Oblige the voice that tells you more.

And that voice is now ANOTHER candidate for who Logan is voicing....

Supergiant is at least gonna be at PAX east this weekend so it won't be long till we see some actual footage......

Though from their tweets they say this is their biggest demo yet. though that may be referring to the bigger amount of stations to play it on than demo size.

Sorry for the double post but, Techno Buffalo just released a hands on impression.

ign impression....with 22 minutes of footage.

EDIT:Ok. Now that i've seen enough of how the game looks and listening to impressions here's how the "sport" part of it works.

Two teams of three have to take an orb to the opposing teams pyre. There are (right now) 3 archetypes: hedwyn's a normal guy, Jodariel's the big slow tank, and Rukey is the small but quick character. You can only control one character at a time.

Each pyre has 10 points of "health". How much you knock it down depends on what character enters the pyre (with the orb of course). Jodariel inflicts 3 damage, hedwyn 2, and rukey 1. The character that enters is also removed from play for a period of time so there's 2 v 3. You can also throw the orb into the pyre to inflict the same damage but you avoid banishment at the risk of it being intercepted.

Now those strange circles around the characters are an aura. Each character has a different sized aura. If an opponent enters that aura they are "banished" from play for a period of time (you can jump over an aura though). You can also shoot that aura by charging it...with the same effect should you hit an opponent. If the opponent is carrying the orb they will drop it and vise versa.

When you stand next to your team you "link" your auras which increases their size and thus area of effect. One use of this is to group around the pyre to keep your opponent from walking in (though they can still jump in).

When one teams pyre is extinguished, they lose. Winning gives a big enlightenment boost. Enlightenment being this games version of EXP.

The rest of the game plays kinda like Banner Saga. You are traveling in your "blackwagon" and have a certain amount of time to get to your destinations. However traveling at night is dangerous so every night you make camp.

When you do you can do 1 of 3 daily tasks. Right now you can do one a night but that may change later.

The 3 tasks are: Forage; look through areas to try and find food/fuel/potentially other items. Study: Unlocks more pages of the tome and thus unlocks more lore...what benefit there is to this remains to be seen. Mentor: where you pick a character and give them a small enlightenment boost through giving them better knowledge of the rites.

Enlightenment is divided into 5 ranks. When a character levels up the can pick a skill which can range from firing your aura off in a wider arc to banishing foes for longer times.

You can also look around the blackwagon which serves as your base. here you can check your characters' status, maybe check the tomes to see what you've learned and your inventory. You may also find characters here and you can talk to them to give them stat boosts. (one such convo is when you convince Rukey to get rid of the mustache).

Ok that's as much as i have gleaned from the footage and the impressions i have read so far.

Hopefully it won't be far into 2017 before we get this.....Transistor was revealed around the same time and came out in May. So i'm thinking similar....granted these are 2 different games.

So the game comes out on July 25th. This is posted on the ps4 website, but the Steam page also lists the 25th as the release date, so the launch isn't exclusive.

I'm excited. Bastion was one of my favorite games the year it came out and though I didn't enjoy Transistor that much, I still liked its atmosphere an depth. Supergiant has yet to do wrong by me.

This is getting more and more interesting. I like the whole "sportsball MOBA" approach to combat, but I'm digging the Persona-esque social RPG element even more. The lack of a failstate and overall concept behind the combat ritual implies that you'll probably turn into sort of a puppeteer over the course of the game who can deliberately fuck characters over to make life for them as unpleasant as possible. The setting reminds me a bit of Obsidian's Tyranny, just more inventive, and less grimdark. And with Hawkwind album cover aesthetics. Oh, and Logan Cunningham now sounds uncannily like the Witch Hunter from The End Times Vermintide, which is awesome.

Fear the cinnamon sugar swirl. By the Gods, fear it, Laurence.
