"I think some sources claim that all Pokemon are just one species, just with a varying range of sub-species. From a biological point of view, it explains why there can be so much cross-breeding with different Pokemon."
Even better, I think officially no one has still actually seen Pokémon breed or lay an egg.
"What a century this week has been." - Seung Min KimI think the "Mew is the ancestor of all Pokemon" thing was strictly a Gen 1 thing and hasn't been touched since.
It's fair to assume that Mew was the genetic origin of all Pokemon that aren't either artificial or forces of nature. At least, that's the best way to reconcile the lore with Sinnoh lore IMO
Also, with Gen 8's announcement today, I wonder if it'll be at least referenced in the movie?
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."It'd be pretty crazy if the film actually introduced a new Pokemon from Sword and Shield. Maybe as The Stinger or something?
It would all depend on how tight-lipped Game Freak is about the development of Gen VIII, as I can see them taking precautions in preventing unnecessary leaks. On the other hand, they did share Pokemon they were still working on with Sakurai while he was working on the Smash Bros games, so who knows.
And if they're all descended from Mew as a common ancestor, is Pokemon descent similar to Bulbasaur/Venusaur/Ivysaur (for example) style evolutionary stages, where evolution happens in an individual Pokemon all at once? Maybe instead of ordinary descent with modification and natural selection, once in a blue moon a Pokemon evolution goes wrong, something akin to mutation in genetic replication, and they turn into a completely different species.
Sorry, this kind of thing is just endlessly fascinating to me.
Considering Mew doesn't evolve at all, Pokemon evolution being more akin to metamorphosis and the existence of regional variants, no, natural selection still exist.
Given all the hints that Pokemon may be smarter than humans, maybe they want us to keep guessing about their true nature?
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."How smart can they be? They can only remember four moves!
"What a century this week has been." - Seung Min KimThat's just what they want you to think.
In actuality, they remember everything.
There are extinct Pokemon, so maybe there are Darwinian missing links.
Kinda hoping every police woman and nurse are played by the same two actresses.
"What a century this week has been." - Seung Min KimThey really should do that. Simple, easy, and if they don't draw attention to it it's unlikely casual movegoers will notice, but anyone who saw the anime will find it hilarious.

Anime or game.
It would be a dream to see that. unlikely though since we see a screen of the police station in the last trailer.
The Joy and Jenny joke stopped being funny 20 years ago, especially after the anime writers forgot it was supposed to be a joke and started playing it straight.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? It's not really a joke anymore. It's just Pokemon being Pokemon.

Mega Man fanatic extraordinaireThe MPAA has rated the movie PG.
Anyone who knows anything about Pokémon and its core demographic would know that a PG-13 rating was, from the get-go, out of the question. That being said, it's still surprising given Ryan Reynolds' infamy.

Two, in fact.
"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherHe claims he was going to pick them up at school when he got the news, and promptly abandoned them because "Detective Pikachu doesn't know who those two little girls are."
For anyone who hasn't seen the vid.
My inexplicable excitement for this film continues! If nothing else, it'll be a pretty unique entry into the Pokémon media out there.
I never thought I would see the day when a Pikachu says hell that isn't in an arbidged.
Oh what a time to be alive.
