Take this with a grain of salt but judging by IMDB's cast list (not a reliable source but what the hell), several actors will be portraying news reporters in Rhyme City working for...CNN (no, that's not a typo).
Note that two of the roles are (supposedly) mistyped as "CNM Reporter." Take that as you may.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherI'm surprised Japan does'tn already have a live action pokemon movie, plenty of anime movies though and the last count it was 10
New theme music also a boxWell, they've been steadily releasing a Pokemon film every year since 1998. Why would they make a live-action film when making it animated is probably a lot cheaper in the long run?
live action films make more money then animated films usually, and actually a live action film would be cheaper as animated films are crazy expensive which is why so many end up as box office bombs
New theme music also a boxLive action isn’t cheaper with a CGI budget. It’s basically the same as making both a live-action and animated film, with double the costs of set and crew.
Oh yeah animated live action films are crazy expensive, are some point it would be easier to a animated film instead of trying to combine both
New theme music also a boxIf Detective Pikachu doesn't do as well as the studio hopes, I'm betting they'll stick to animation from then on out.
This was a risk The Pokemon Company was willing to take.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherHas there been any insight into what the Japanese Pokemon fan community response has been? Trailer's gotten a lot of positive press in the West, but I haven't read anything about the opinions back home.
The reaction has been...so-so. Some Japanese fans aren't happy with Pikachu being a furry creature, even though he's a mouse Pokemon and mice are, err, furry.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherIt's animation; pretty much every Pokemon basically has just skin rather than fur no matter how outlandish their color scheme is. Unless it's a Pikachu like Sparky or that recent Sun and Moon episode where Pikachu comes across all those other Pikachu with a ton of different hairstyles both boy and girl, their fur never really comes into play.
So fanboys whinning about trivial deatails? Glad to see that, no matter the place they hail from, faboys are always bitches.
I cannot believe how good this movie looks. The jokes in the trailer are legitimately funny. The setting and tone feel appropriately noir without turning to self-parody like every "mature" Pokemon fanfic ever. I like that it's this fun little mystery that just happens to be set in the Pokemon world instead of, like The Pokemon Movie. I'm very into it.
Of course, Danny DeVito as Pikachu would have been miles funnier. Unironically. I don't care what anyone says.
Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?We want what we cannot have ;_;
I hope I see my boy Scizor in glorious live action. Feraligatr and/or Sceptile would also be acceptable.
Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?(10x) In Japan, anime is a very big market. And more easier to manage than say, live-action. It's Ace Attorney where you can easily do humans and that's it. The Pokémon are the stars and they have to be animated. CGI animals are always more difficult to make than a 2D cel image. Especially realistic animals.
And you have a long running anime to coincide with the movie, it's also far easier to jump into the story without the need of establishing the characters. Want to know more about Satoshi and Pikachu? Watch the TV show.
And I'm not surprised by Japan's so-so reaction to realistic Pokémon. After all, the cartoonish and kawaii nature of Pokémon is fully embraced in Japan, rather than being downplayed for the badass aspects that Western audience enjoyed.

I am realy intersted to see how will the ghost and rock types be portrated
because those pokemon (well some) have either solid or amorphous(i think this is the right word) designs while the pokemon in the trailer are either mammalian or reptilian in design.

DRAGON DRAGONIn case you're curious, the Chinese are excited for Detective Pikachu as much as they were for Avengers Infinity War. Safe to say this is going to be huge in China. Japanese seem to be more mixed however.

Japan is weird.
They are as a culture obsessed with cartoony cuteness.
Where there's life, there's hope.Wait China is more excited for this movie than Infinity War?
If China likes this movie then it's guaranteed to make bank.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?Pretty much the same results.
I feel like Aladdin is gonna get utterly destroyed when we have Avengers 4 and Detective Pikachu going at it, unless Detective Pikachu is really bad which that first trailer is making me doubt.
Pokemon being the biggest franchise ever, and Avengers 4 being the most hype movie of the decade is utterly going to destroy Aladdin's box office gross. Especially if China is extremely hype for this movie.

Hope Mulan isn't affected by it.
I don't care about Aladin: it's not going to be better than the animation and the original tale is rather boring.
Mulan, however, now that's cool. And if they go full Wuxia with a good choreographer, then it's just my dream movie ♥️.
I was thinking about his nose, actually.
