Interdimensional Daemon Hunting - Crossover RP Interest Check/Planning

Go To

So one morning I wake up and am immediately hit with the idea of a Crossover RP that inverts the usual idea. Instead of having a bunch of characters from previously existing works of fiction all meet together in a mostly original world, how about we have a bunch of original characters go and visit a bunch of worlds from previously existing works of fiction?

That idea eventually turned into this: A multiversal monitoring agency of sorts has picked up massive readings of daemons, a malevolent race of emotional embodiments, from many different worlds across the multiverse. Dealing with these daemons is top priority, but Director Celeste is a very busy woman and simply can't handle them all on her own. So she hits upon the idea of hiring folks from all across the multiverse who just might be familiar with these other worlds to do the dirty work for her.

It sounds a bit like Kingdom Hearts. However, I personally don't have enough interest in that franchise to join an RP of it, let alone actually make and manage one. So I opted for this idea instead.

The purpose of this thread is to 1. make sure there's people interested (because if no one's interested than what's the point?), 2. work out some of the specifics of this idea so it's less Kingdom Hearts-ish, and 3. figure out a method of picking what settings to use.

I'm thinking of having this RP consist of 10 "Chapters" or so, with each chapter focusing on a specific work. If picking these settings was purely up to me, then it'd be focused entirely on video games, with a specific focus on Nintendo. However, the number of people who'd go for that are probably a lot less than the number of players I'd actually like.

So what I'm thinking is this: there'd be a slate of sorts of a bunch of different works suggested by players. People would then vote on which setting to use. The winner would be the focus of a chapter, with a mini-GM who knows that specific work more than I do taking over the direction for it.

Besides that, there's some other things like the nature of the central agency and of the daemons themselves. I do have an idea of exactly where the daemons come from, and that they often take on aspects of the world in which they inhabit, but beyond that there's still quite a few things to figure out.

So, would anyone be up for this?

Before things get too far along, I should also mention that despite the fact I said the focus would be on a bunch of original characters exploring previously existing worlds, players would be able to play as either an OC or a canon character. Celeste isn't picky about where she gets her underlings.

Hi, if schoolwork doesn't suddenly decide to crush me I guess I'll give it a whirl.

And hey again Daydre.

Certahnvy. I want an unorthodox dual-wield.

I have an idea for voting on slates. Maybe each slate to vote on has to have a theme, such as "Desert Region Slate", or "Anime Slate", or "Obligatory Christmas Episode Slate".

Fun Fact: I came up with the "Unlurking Sentinel" name because I was intending to stop being a Lurker. I don't think it worked.

On themes: I wasn't necessarily planning on having each chapter have a "theme" beyond the earlier ones being more lighthearted and later ones be more serious. I suppose it's an option, though I should note that I'm not going to give any particular form of media any preferential treatment when it comes to making the slates.

Some other things I've decided on:

Fisher Kingdom is not going to be in effect for the PCs unless it's absolutely needed for the PCs to be effective. For example, the PCs won't get spooky in appearance just for the sake of it if Halloween Town is chosen to be the focus of a chapter. However, the PCs might get changed into sea animals or merpeople if an underwater world gets chosen to be the focus of a chapter since I doubt most of the PCs are going to be able to breathe underwater by default. The daemons will generally match the chapter's world, however.

It should go without saying that this is primarily going to be a combat-focused RP. I'm not going to stop you if you want to pick a character that can't fight, but I'm not giving your character any preferential treatment. Although for my current plans, there will be a way to deal with the final boss beyond fighting. On the subject of fighting, anyone who dies will respawn in the agency with no harm done (although Celeste will likely chew them out depending on what the world was).

Finally, I've already decided that the first chapter will focus on Popstar, which I'll be managing. I'll probably pick the world for the final chapter as well. Everything in between will be handled by the voting slates.

I'd still like some more feedback on what I've said so far, though it is nice to see people interested in this.

You know, this sounds kinda like one of the A Game of Gods spin-offs... can't recall the name though. Anyways I like the premise so... tentative interest here?

Well, if Canon characters are an option, then how will power levels be handled? Wanting to play a teleporting, super dasher cyrogenic Magic Knight who also has an energy blasting gauntlet.

Besides that, what's the limit to what kind of worlds can be suggested?

Ideally, if you were to pick two PCs at random and have them fight each other, each one would have an equal shot at winning based on powers alone. Really powerful characters (for example, Saitama) wouldn't be allowed period.

There isn't a limit on world suggestions at the moment; I'll deal with those on a case-by-case basis depending on what characters join and what gets suggested.

I'm still working on just what the "default" dameons should look like and what sort of facilities the central agency should have. If anyone has suggestions for either of those or for anything else it'd be much appreciated.

[up]I assume that we are all going to be new recruits, and that we should know very little about the daemons, or at least not everything.

Also, do we make our character sheets here?

My current idea for the daemons' origins is pretty spoilertastic and wouldn't be revealed until close to the end of the game. In all honesty, I'm not sure how much help I can get for them without dropping that spoiler.

As for signups, I'll make a separate topic for those once the time comes.

[up]Well, don't tell us that there's a massive twist, J.J. Abrams. *THIS JOKE HAS SUBSTANCE I SWEAR*

Well anyways, what kind of daemons are they? What do they look and act like? How do we fight them? There are boundaries you must be in if you don't want further Kingdom Hearts comparisons and still have them be good. Of course, I probably don't know all of those boundaries, but still.

Either way, I think that I just got an idea for a character. Maybe I'll have him be a super paranoid conspiracy theorist or something. I'm still going by him having an unorthodox dual-wield.

I'm interested. I know everyone hates it when I ask this, but Eldritch Abomination, yes or no?

And I am not playing as the Abomination itself, I am playing as it's servitors.

I'm sure the Accord would offer their services.

For what I have for the Daemons so far beyond spoilertastic origins:

  • If the fact I spelled their name "Daemon" and not "Demon" is any indication, these are spirits. They're emotional embodiments (or at least have connections to emotions) instead of elemental embodiments like classical daemons. They're also aggressive, unlike the mostly benevolent classical daemons.
  • Still working on appearances, although it's safe to assume that they vary wildly. They also tend to match the world that they're found in.
  • They can be fought in the same way as any other monster; however, they generally can't be killed. "Boss" daemons will respawn by drawing from the emotions of the populace, while lesser daemons respawn from the local boss daemon. To permanently deal with a daemon infestation, one needs to "catch" the boss daemon and take it out of the world. Afterwards, Celeste has a way of turning the boss daemons into Sealed Evil in a Can until a more permanent way of dealing with them is found.
  • Given the nature of the daemons, there is a way of dealing with them beyond punching them in the face until they submit. I haven't quite figured out what that alternative way is, however.

[up]Sorry, but no. The daemons will provide enough eldritch stuff for this RP.

[up] Sounds like that alternative way could be communing with the daemons, or taming them in some way. A more emotional answer; understanding them instead of fighting them in order to pacify them.
