Diversity and Representation in Media

Go To

A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.

Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.

Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.

    Original OP
For discussing any racial, gender, and orientation misdoings happening across various movies and the film industry today.

This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

I definitely think the focus of this topic should continue to remain on all aspects of diversity and representation across all types of media, but I'm ambivalent about a move (though it would make sense).

[up][up] The problem with keeping this in Live Action Film is that we talk about non-film works of fiction on diversity too in this very thread. Comes off confusing, doesn't it?

Not really, no.

Selfishly, I dip into this thread when browsing films, I don't browse OTC nearly so often.

The only reason the thread was kept in the Film forum last time was tradition. I'm happy to keep it here as long as the scope remains multimedia, but in strictly categorical terms it's misplaced. (It's a bigger problem to me that OTC is considered the only forum where these conversations "belong").
I'll second this. I like having more of a variety in the media subforums as opposed to just threads about a specific work, and I'm kind of used to having this one here.
However, it is worth noting we've had the conversation here on whether or not to move the thread at least a half dozen times, maybe we (well not me, I'm not a moderator) should just move the darn thing so people stop asking? Or do we think updating the header will help clarify?

At this point I think we do the header to start with.

I'll go back and talk to the staff about the approach for multimedia threads. This has repeatedly come up elsewhere (e.g. are Marvel and Star Wars film or TV? And both have comics in the same continuity too...), so might be a wider question.

Yuri on Ice Movie Has Been Officially Cancelled

The production committee for the Yuri on Ice The Movie: Ice Adolescence (stylized YURI!!! on ICE the movie: ICE ADOLESCENCE) announced that the film has been officially canceled in a post to X (formerly Twitter). The statement read:

Yuri!!! on Ice is an anime series starring two gay figure skaters.

from what I've heard it's probably(?) because MAPPA doesn't exactly get much from actually making the film profit wise. Something about the rights?

That'd probably make more sense if they hadn't kept Sayo Yamamoto on staff for eight years and constantly sending back rewrite requests for her script.

I have heard a very plausible theory that the reason that the movie needed so many rewrites and adjustment has to do with the conceit that it probably, like much of the series, originally took place in a very rosy-tinted and idealized Russia. And given all that's happened in the world since the OG anime released, it's likely they had to pivot hard and it eventually wasn't worth it given how much the original's faded from popular consciousness.

[up][up]Copy-pasting from Wikipedia: Aren reunites with Lizzie in Los Angeles, where they reconcile and happily walk off together—while Lizzie, apparently joking, tells him she belongs to a magical society of her own. In a coda, we see her enter a hair salon and access a secret entrance to the Society of Supportive Wives and Girlfriends (SOSWAG).

One joke mentioned on this wiki is that one of the reasons it flopped was because too many people didn't want to say the title out loud when buying a ticket and picked another movie.

I have a question. Is there any studies on whether Native Americans want their culture represented in media not made by them or not?

GLAAD's (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) annual “Where We Are on TV” report as covered by TV Line found that 36% of LGBTQ TV Characters Won’t Be Returning Next Season. And the shows that have been canceled aren't being replaced with similarly inclusive programming. Other insights straight from the article:

  • Out of all LGBTQ characters, 48% are men, 47% are women, and 5% are nonbinary; 36% are gay, 25% are lesbian, 24% are bisexual, 10% are queer and 5.1% are transgender.

  • Broadcast TV recorded its lowest LGBTQ representation (8.6% of all series regular characters, down 2% YOY) since the 2017-18 TV season. With recurring characters folded in, broadcast TV had 64 LGBTQ characters — less than half of the 2021-22 TV season total.

  • Primetime scripted cable programming tallied 77 total LGBTQ characters, down 45% from last year. Nearly 40 of those LGBTQ characters will not be returning, due to series being cancelled/ending, characters dying/leaving, or the miniseries/anthology format.

  • Scripted streaming series had 327 total LGBTQ characters, down just 0.8% YOY — though 119 of them won’t return this year. Netflix leads with 47% inclusion but out of 155 LGBTQ characters, 59 won’t return.

  • On broadcast TV, 25% of LGBTQ characters are Black, 9% are Asian-Pacific Islander, 6% Latine, NCIS: Hawai’i‘s Lucy was the lone MENA (Middle East/North Africa), and zero were indigenous. On cable, 30% of LGBTQ characters were Black, 7% Latine, 5% API, 4% MENA and one indigenous. On streaming, 17% of LGBTQ characters were Black, 10% Latine, 9% API, 3% MENA and 2% indigenous.

Well, yeah, Girl on Girl Is Hot is a trope.

Unfortunate news generally. I don't know if that's TV execs reacting to audience opinion or numbers or what, though, I don't pay attention to this sort of news as much as I should.
