TV Tropes 1.3 Released!

Go To

Hey tropers, the day has arrived. If you were one of our Kickstarter donators last year you've probably seen us tinkering with a new design for months. Within the next couple hours (depending on how fast your DNS updates you'll start hitting our new servers with the updated version of TV Tropes). A huge thanks to those of you who have been monitoring it and giving us feedback throughout the development process. Some of the new features include:

- Updated design throughout for a cleaner browsing experience
- One click sign in with Facebook
- Random Shuffle button to stay on a namespace (hit Random Media then the Shuffle button to randomize that namespace)
- Browse Watchlist in an image view
- History page now highlights sentences that were deleted/added to make it easier to review changes
- New image uploader with built in crop function
- New About Us page so you can see who we are.
- Contact Us form
- Trope Depictions on the home page (artists can submit their own comic to go with a trope)
- Bug List page Query Bugs (and Query Wishlist for tech wishes) to organize and track bugs on the site.

Ok. Let the feedback begin. (See Anxiety Tropes for my current feelings)

Notes:
- Please do not bother asking for the old design to come back. The lease of the old servers did expire at the day of the changeover, the new ones cannot run the old design.
- You can move the sidebar to the left by going into your profile and selecting Lefthand Sidebar.

The edit button exists. I can see it on my screen while in Wide Load mode. It may also have to do with the size of my overall screen, which is 20 inches or so.

...HOLY FUCK.

Sorry. The header up there is white on white (Night Vision mode). I thought it hadn't loaded. surprised How did somebody manage to do that by accident?

I came here to give feedback on the subheader thing for the Ask the Tropers... chunk of things (Trope Finder, Wish List, Bugs), and especially the icons.
The Trope Finder icon looks like a trashcan, and Ask the Tropers looks like it goes to a Help menu, but the others could look worse.
Also, the Home button is damned redundant with the site logo in the top left of the stickied header (which I'm using because I like the idea of the search bar and Forums shortcut hanging around like that; props for that idea), and the doohickey titles should really be given enough room so that you can spell them out. I keep thinking ATT is the wireless service, TF is just bloody mysterious but probably has Trash in the name, and YKTS always makes me think I'm looking at a shortcut to YKTTW.

FYI, I discovered through experimentation that the updated Search function (using the input in the header bar) does not work while AdBlock is running on the search page. Turn that off and it loads properly.

An option to move the search bar to the left would be much appreciated, as would an option to make the side toolbar disappear altogether so that the main column can have more space. Otherwise, things look alright so far.

I wish for the option to remove the Community Showcase window.

The sidebar is at least 1/3 too thick because of the Community Showcase banners. The Display Options could go in two rows.

For everyone wondering why they can't use the old site layout, Fighteer said this a few pages back.

"'''We were rushed by circumstances outside our control to get this new design deployed, and it's way more important to fix the core technical problems than to make it satisfy everyone's (often conflicting) aesthetic preferences.

While we may support multiple layouts in the future as a matter of user preference, the core elements of this new design are not going to change, because they represent a complete overhaul of the underlying functionality. What we have now is the base that will be built on for future development.

Nobody who knows anything about the wiki's innards wants the old code base back.

The lease on a physical server was expiring. We had a newer, more powerful one waiting to go, and that one's got all the new code plus software that won't support the old wiki design.'''"

@Fighteer: Will that be fixed for people with AdBlock or is TVTropes going to pull a Yahoo Mail and basically remove functionality for Adblock users? Because that will definitely piss people off a lot.

@BSN: I know that the staff has no intention of providing special accommodations for AdBlock users. That said, I'm trying to find out what, if anything, changed in the search API to cause it to be flagged when it wasn't before.

.... That's not special accommodations though? That's kind of a major issue for a good chunk of the userbase.

Edit: I just tried searching myself (I run AdBlock on every site, nothing is whitelisted for me because I don't like ads slowing my browser down [lol]) and I had the same thing as [down]. It took the search in the header a good 10 seconds to load the search.

I run Ad Block and it worked okay, but took longer to load so it looked blank at first.

Doesn't using adblock gimp the site of ad payment?

I don't see why they need to accommodate people that use it.

It's not bad exactly, but the page does feel too busy and I wish the stuff on the right, including the search bar were on left. Plus it feels like there is more wasted space on the borders now.

P.S. I liked the more artistic icons for Fridge, WMG, and the like the old one had.

I rather like this new design. It seems to work well on mobile, haven't looked at desktop version yet. Also had no idea that this was coming. Not sure if I like some of the new font choices though for some of the pages, specifically for the Sugar Wiki pages, but that may just be personal preference.

Just my two cents on the matter.

Yeah, didn't have any real issues. I don't mind the slightly longer loading times. The search engine has other issues, anyway. It defaults to the 1st page, and always to the relevance option. I'd like that to be eventually fixed so it goes to the same page and stay on date if you selected it.

"fixing a bug caused by interaction with adblock" is special consideration. Turn adblock off for TV Tropes. Problem solved.

It's not a question of not being able to view the Google search: I can fix that. It's that it's AWKWARD and it brings up a whole bunch of junk that's unrelated to what I'm trying to search for. I want the title search that was under tools. That was actually useful.

You know, the one that was (and apparently still is, although the only way I got to it was through an old page that hadn't updated yet) at this address: [1]

That is a FAR better search tool than the one in the bar up top.

...Yes, it does still work. The link functionality (at least in the preview) is what's broken.

[up][up][up]Going out of your way to prevent Adblock is only going to alienate a userbase, and that is the cold, hard truth.

Especially with an attitude that comes off as smug and condescending.

Okay, so I've only spent a few minutes looking through this new layout, but there are a few things things that jump out immediately. While I am not a fan of the new layout (the old one was just so much better), I think I can learn to live with most of it. One thing I cannot stand is the new buttons for Random Trope/Media. Okay, yes, they're cute, and maybe if entire the website looked different, I'd like them, but they just look so out of place and tacky. I dislike how you now have to go to your profile to switch to the lefthand sidebar. And speaking of which, is it just me or is that sidebar wider than it was before? The coloring is just boring. Bring back some of the old blue, please! I don't really have time now to look through this more. Those were just the things that jumped out at me.

[up][up]This.

Also: If TV Tropes being supported entirely by ad revenue is, in my honest opinion, a pretty bad decision. You could make it so that there's a way to donate to the site for users who want to support the site. And I'd bet a lot of users who could donate to the site, would donate.

And going out of their way to accommodate add block will lead to no add revenue and a site that can't sustain itself.

"We were rushed by circumstances outside our control to get this new design deployed"

That explains something. :/ At least it isn't unusable, even on mobile.

...Just discovered what Browse TVTropes looks like. Is that new? It seems almost overdue, if anything. 'S a good idea, regardless. [tup] Even if it feels like Know Your Meme, but hey, they do well, don't they?

EDIT: As for that sidebar, though, yeah, text is damn near smothered by it on mobile. Think I blame the ads, but I dunno if they dictate anything about relative size or whatnot.

The updated logo looks nice, and the "Random Trope" and "Random Media" buttons are kinda cute, but all the blank space and the giant sidebar detract from the good stuff. Hiding the history button in a dropdown menu is annoying. Also, all the text in forum posts gets squished onto about half the page on mobile, which sometimes requires lots and lots of scrolling just to read a single post. I do like the button that shows a random article within a particular namespace, as well as the ability to preview forum posts.
