TV Tropes 1.3 Released!

Go To

Hey tropers, the day has arrived. If you were one of our Kickstarter donators last year you've probably seen us tinkering with a new design for months. Within the next couple hours (depending on how fast your DNS updates you'll start hitting our new servers with the updated version of TV Tropes). A huge thanks to those of you who have been monitoring it and giving us feedback throughout the development process. Some of the new features include:

- Updated design throughout for a cleaner browsing experience
- One click sign in with Facebook
- Random Shuffle button to stay on a namespace (hit Random Media then the Shuffle button to randomize that namespace)
- Browse Watchlist in an image view
- History page now highlights sentences that were deleted/added to make it easier to review changes
- New image uploader with built in crop function
- New About Us page so you can see who we are.
- Contact Us form
- Trope Depictions on the home page (artists can submit their own comic to go with a trope)
- Bug List page Query Bugs (and Query Wishlist for tech wishes) to organize and track bugs on the site.

Ok. Let the feedback begin. (See Anxiety Tropes for my current feelings)

Notes:
- Please do not bother asking for the old design to come back. The lease of the old servers did expire at the day of the changeover, the new ones cannot run the old design.
- You can move the sidebar to the left by going into your profile and selecting Lefthand Sidebar.

Really sucks there is no Classic option as others have said, really don't like this change, wide-load don't look good anymore for me.

My conformity rationalization has mostly kicked in, so I'm semi-used to the new layout at least on the forums. I would prefer the old design, but knowing that it's impossible kinda makes me feel better about the new one, since there's room for improvements and the promise of possible layout customization.

I would like the font changed back, though; this new one strains my eyes. The sidebar being too wide also is a strain.

[up][up][up][up] Toss it in the Bugs system and we'll see. Is your avatar exactly 100x100? If not, there is a known stretching bug. Also, try the Wide Load toggle to see if it appears.

[up] Apparently the sidebar width is mandatory due to placement of an ad.

I'm seeing what page I'm on and the magnifying glass at the search bar. tongue Minor issues, but that have already been fixed, so props to the people doing all the work we can't see.

You might have to be a programmer of some denomination to appreciate what "old, broken code" really means, and how it can make even simple changes have consequences they by reasonable logic shouldn't have. Granted, I've not look at this site's code, but I've well familiar with wanting to write entirely new code rather than having to deal with the old.

[up][up]And that's why the site's off my ad blocker's whitelist.

Honestly, now that I've played with the settings my only issues are the missing forum buttons and edit preview, as well as that sidebar. I know I'm beating a dead horse here but it's too wide. On the lower parts of the page there's too much blank space even in Wide Load and the actual content feels shunted to the left/right depending on the settings.

I remember this exact same thing happening months ago with the last redesign, including similar complaints and reassurances. I'm sure most of the complaints will be settled in due time, so let's not scream about how the site is ruined.

Now for an issue. When scrolling down the Tropes/Media/Index/Forums buttons disappear from the top bar, which seems wasteful if the top bar is always going to be there. Not something that has to be dealt with right away, but do put it on the to do list please.

@AnotherDuck: I'm in agreement. I had to help a friend with his spaghetti code issue and ended up just throwing everything out and making an entirely new code set. [lol]

The appearance of the site however can be changed within the new code (I hope)

As far as I can tell it's exactly 100x100 (and wide load doesn't affect it). I'll go put it in Bugs then.

EDIT: Actually, if I uploaded the version of it I have on this computer, then it's 115x125 I think.

I typically browse in night vision as its easier on the eyes, and I'm sure other people have mentioned these two things, but just in case, I'll bring them up: First, the sticky post at the top of each page of a forum thread is completely unreadable in night vision mode. At least on my screen it's white on white (with exception of the links which are green). Maybe if you could change that box to grey in night vision mode, that would be awesome.

My second little minor complaint is with the mod-hat posts in night vision mode. While I understand that these posts are supposed to jump out at you, I think they do so a little too much, to the point where they hurt my eyes. The color looks fine in normal mode, but perhaps for night vision mode, would it be possible to shift to a darker shade of red?

Anyway, sorry for the thread hop. Just thought I'd throw my two cents in.

~Sterok: We are aware of the vanishing header links and will get that fixed. I also want the internal header bar to be sticky as well, if it isn't going to be replicated at the bottom of each page.

"How little I know of how broke it was, under the hood" and "The old site is NEVER coming back?"

Wow, the self-justification is just oozing out from between the cracks, isn't it.

I'm out of here, gang. If they ask for feedback because they want their tummies rubbed, TV Tropes has officially Jumped the Shark. It's been a good run, but all good things.......

This might just be me being an idiot, but either the preview function when editing a trope page was removed, or I just can't find it for some reason. In the former case, it'd be a lot easier with it back; in the latter, it'd be great if the option was displayed as prominently on the page as in the last format.

As for the visual interface, it's not exactly my cup of tea, but there's no real glaring problems IMO - we'll probably eventually get used to it. (Only thing I would suggest is to - as others have said - hide fewer things in a maze of dropdown menus, but even that's fairly minor.)

Work hard, increase production, prevent accidents, and be happy.

Wow. This is...awful. Really, really awful. And the reaction from the mods when it turns out that most people DON'T like this change is atrocious.

[up][up] The Preview function will be restored. It seems to have gone missing and must be tracked down and given what for.

Note: Taking up the complaints about the color, I composed a list of how I think the color should be changed on the Wishlist. Please come comment my design choices.

And yes, I used "are" instead of "our". I realized that there is no edit option on Ask The Tropers.

[up][up] There's an edit button but it's cleverly hidden as an icon with no hover text. I've asked to get that addressed. Unless it's a mod-only button, which I can't check without logging out.

I have a question for the Bugs and Wishlist page. What does the "Toggle Children" option do? Is that like a way to let you know when your post got a reply?

Speaking as a guy who posts on the RP section of the site, where pages can run very, very long within 25 posts, the wasted space on the side (Be it whatever side you have it on, props for letting me move it at least) is glaringly bad to me. Yes I know that everyone and their mother said it, but I shall add my voice to the fire. We had a decent thing with "Classic Mode" without having to worry about adds, surly we can get something worked out with it? at the least, is it not possible to allow posts to extend into the empty space once we clear the used parts? I think a lot of people would agree that's a workable compromise to fit with the apparent add requirements?

Why is there no option for sidebar being on the left or right? Also I already miss the blue, gray is so boring.

How on Earth do I search for things now without having to use that awkward Google search bar? The search that used to be under "tools" (the one I always used, which was much better at finding what I wanted and NOT finding stuff I didn't want) isn't there any more.
